The Champlain Valley Folk Festival in Burlington, VT is getting close (August 4-6).

Champlain Valley has been my favorite small festival for many years and I've done some of the MCing there for the past four. This year, I was also on the programming committee with Robert Resnik and Wally Macnow and we put a lot of emphasis on planning interesting workshops.

Here's the daytime workshop schedule (not including all the mainstage and daytime concerts and not including the dance stage). You can find those schedules on the Champlain Valley Folk Festival web site.

There are five stages, plus the dance stage, so some of these workshops are concurrent.

Saturday...

10:45-11:55, "Meetings with Remarkable Guitarists" with Andrew Hardin, Artie Traum, Guy Van Duser and Jeff Warschauer. Hosted by Artie Traum.

11:00-12:15, "Chorus Songs for Singing" with Margaret MacArthur, Lee Murdock and George Ward. Hosted by Margaret MacArthur. Participatory.

12:10-1:10, "A Life of Song" with Barbara Carns, Margaret MacArthur and Helen Schneyer. Hosted by Wally Macnow.

12:30-1:15, "The Barley Grain for Me" with Margaret Christl and Ian Robb.

12:30-1:30, "Pennywhistles from Heaven" with Peter Barnes, Billy Novick and George Ward. Hosted by Billy Novick. Participatory.

1:20-2:20, "Stringband Jam" with Double Decker Stringband and Reed Martin, Howie Bursen & Martin Grosswendt. Hosted by Howie Bursen.

1:45-2:45, "Lake and Canal Songs" with Lee Murdock and George Ward.

2:30-4:00, "Songwriters' Guitar Pull" with Steve Gillette, Anne Hills, Tom Russell and Jesse Winchester. Hosted by Mike Regenstreif.

2:35-3:50, "Blues Extravaganza" with Eric Bibb, Barbara Carns, Martin Grosswendt, Artie Traum and Guy Van Duser & Billy Novick. Hosted by Eric Bibb.

3:00-4:15, "Irish Session" with Sean Cleland, Jimmy Keane and Robbie O'Connell. Hosted by Robbie O'Connell. Participatory.

4:00-5:30, "Meetings with Remarkable Fiddlers" with Sean Cleland, Dan Schreyer, John Specker, Deborah Strauss, Pete Sutherland and Harvey Tolman. Hosted by Pete Sutherland.

4:30-5:30, "Quebecois Session" with Domino, Enterloupe and Tess LeBlanc. Hosted by Tess LeBlanc. Participatory.

Sunday...

9:30-11:45, "Sacred Harp," hosted by Shelly Posen.

10:45-noon, "Love is Mainly Just Memories" with Margaret Christl, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Priscilla Herdman, Anne Hills, Robbie O'Connell and Jesse Winchester. Hosted by Mike Regenstreif.

10:45-noon, "Quebecois Extravaganza" with J.F. Berthiaume, Domino, Enterloupe and Tess LeBlanc.

11:00-12:15, "Banjo Jam" with Howie Bursen, Anne Downey and Reed Martin. Participatory.

11:45-12:30, "Songs of the Older and Cleveland Families" with Colleen Cleveland and George Ward. Hosted by Colleen Cleveland.

12:30-1:45, "Guitar Jam" with Howie Bursen, Martin Grosswendt and Artie Traum. Hosted by Artie Traum. Participatory.

1:15-2:15, "Daydreamers Bever Grow Old (family concert)" with Priscilla Herdman, Steve Gillette, Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen. Hosted by Anne Hills.

1:15-2:30, "Songs of Vermont and New York" with Colleen Cleveland, Margaret MacArthur, Pete & Karen Sutherland and George Ward. Hosted by Karen Sutherland.

2:00-3:15, "Squeezeboxes" with Martin Grosswendt, Sabin Jacques, Jimmy Keane and Ian Robb. Hosted by Robert Resnik.

2:00-2:45, "Piano Workshop" with Thomas Bartlett, Jacqueline Schwab and Tery Traub. Hosted by Jacqueline Schwab.

2:45-400, "Old World Music in the New World" with Robbie O'Connell, Sean Cleland & Jimmy Keane and Deborah Strauss & Jeff Warschauer. Hosted by Jeff Warschauer.

Mike,

That is a great schedule of workshops. Burlington is only 2 hours away so we never miss Champlain Valley.

You should blow the horn about the concert schedule too. It's great too.

Jesse Winchester and Tom Russell in the same workshop!!!!

Why does Vermont have to be 2000 miles away?

Hi Mike-

I'm delighted that you're departing from the ever-growing mini-concert-masquerading-as-workshop trend. Congratulations!

I have family here that weekend, and a lot of conflicts, trips to airports, etc.

But I will be there Friday night at 7:30 unless I'm killed or the engine falls out of my car at full speed on the turnpike - either of which is possible, i suppose.

Peter.

Thanks Dick. Although, even with 23 themed workshops, most performers still get two concert sets.

I should also mention that there are off-site dances on Friday and Saturday nights after the concerts and a virtually non-stop dance stage all day long on both Saturday and Sunday.

How do we find the restaurant, Susan? Don't know that we can find time to accept your offer, but we'd sure like to do so. Would a Bill Sables Mudcat BUTTON be an acceptable alternative to the shirt? I don't do T-shirts since I gained a zillion pounds (quit smoking and.... jeez!). We'll look for you at the Folk-Legacy booth at Champlain. Since we're not singing at this one, maybe we'll have more time to get acquainted.

Sandy

Susan,

Unfortunately, you're on the wrong side of Burlington. I'll be going south on 89 to get there.

BTW, the Friday concert starts at 4:30 and is going to be terrific.

4:30- Popcorn Behavior

5:30- Guy Van Duser & Billy Novick

6:30- Herdman, Hills & Mangsen

7:30- Tom Russell w/Andrew Hardin

8:30- Eric Bibb

Sandy, I've sent directions your way. Dick, if you don't have these, I can copy them to you as well. God willing, food will be ready a bit early, but who knows????

Mike, I'll think about Friday evening. It may be my better option, although I'm holding out for a good chunk of Saturday instead.

S'paw, send me your address, the Kahlua Chocolate Chip Cookies would make it, I'm sure. Who needs the rest of the stuff?? (and salsa and cheese get a bit messy via UPS, particularly in August)

Unfortunately, we'll have to be setting up our booth while the rest of you are taking advanatage of Susan's Kitchen. Another time for us, Susan!

Mike: You, Resnik, and Macnow have done a hellova job this year. Congratulations!

Thanks Sandy. I'm quite pleased at what we came up with.

I trust you noticed that I named one of the workshops after a Folk-Legacy album.

Looking forward to seeing you in a few days.

Almost all loaded with a slew of fine CDs to stock our booth at Champlain Valley. This promises to be one of the best of the summer festivals for those who really like traditional music, fine fiddling, and for Tom Russell, etc. fans. Hope many of you can brak away from the daily grind and get up to Burlington. Mudcatters are welcome to use the Folk-Legacy booth as a meeting point (akin to "under the clock in Grand Central?"). We'll look forward to seeing many of you there.

Sandy

I thought Champlain Valley was the best FF I've been to in many years.

Tom Russell, Jesse Winchester, Anne Hills, Gillette & Mangsen, Priscilla Herdman, the Klezmer music of Strauss & Warschauer, Eric Bibb. All terrific.

Congratulations to all involved.
