Subject: Who is Neil Young?
From: Sourdough
Date: 24 Jul 00 - 04:23 AM

I did a Google search for Neil Young but it didn't give me a hint about why he has become a Mudcat Icon.

I assume it is not disguised admiration but I don't get it. Maybe there's an explanation? He certainly has provided a good target.

A puzzled Sourdough

I have heard of him. He is the son of a very famous Canadian sportswriter named Scott Young, so that might explain it.

Yeah Meebo, but they got some stuff in common........

Neil Young is in fact quite talented and an excellent songwriter. His addition to any group has always changed the color, texture, and dynamics of their performance. He has much to commend him in his work with his sons and his family. All that aside............

The focker is crazed........Watching him perform or listening to him talk you get the feeling that there is much which Neil would like to say, but forgets why it is he wants to say it. He's completely off the wall and the look in his eyes is often just psychotic! Especially in his serious rocker mode, I can't tell whether he's playing that Les Paul or screwing it.....and I don't think the guitar can tell either. In short, if you are simply listening to him talk or watching him perform, you tend to believe he's completely and terminally screwed.

So it was with this in mind that when I needed a asylum name in one of my wacky-ass postings (about a year and a half ago in the infamous tiple thread), I came up with the "Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed." Just another of those "Spawisms" that wound up becoming a part of the iconology of Mudcat.

Despite what everyone says here, I like Neil Diamond. Living in North Carolina now, I can't hear "Sweet Caroline" on the radio without feeling all happy. Plus his song "Kentucky Woman" was covered by Deep Purple in 1968, and ROCKS!

I like some of Neil Diamond's stuff, too. But the man has no sense of moderation. At his best, he's a decent pop tunesmith with a flair for showmanship (I still get off on his "preaching" in the middle of Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show). At his worst, he's so over the top that he makes late-period Elvis seem subtle.

And lest we forget, he wrote one of the Monkees' two best songs, as well as the breakthrough hit for UB40. Not that he deserves a medal for either of those, but he has made his mark.

As it relates to music.......rock, folk.....pop........Neil has written songs for almost 40 years and each decade has musically won over more listeners while retaining his mass audience appeal. As a father, Neil is very involved with children with disabilities. He is a true champion in this area, that possibly many people do not realize. Though, I have not seen him perform recently, I believe he performs in a very focused and personally driving manner. Each song becomes a part of him and the performance as one. He usually does not chat, joke or try to entertain the audience, he typically lets the music do that. He's Canadian and he treats the audience like they are very intelligent !!!!!

By the way, I didn't know that Einstein played water polo. My nephew has a Neil Young CD but I have been avoiding it. Maybe I'll give it a try. I listened to the Jayhawks last night after reading a rave review on their new CD. Only made it through 1.5 songs before I ran screaming. Lots of rhythm and noise. Sounded like the Beatles on a bad day. Am I in trouble again, Mbo? Sorry for the babble.

Kendall, you've never heard the folk standard Four Strong Winds? That's by Mr Young. I actually like quite a bit of Neil Young's music, especially tunes he wrote with Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, and some of the solo stuff. He's definitely a hard-rockin' old Hippy, and his performances are sometimes laughable, like watching your father doing the twist used to be. But I have partaken in all the comic potshots about him with gusto. I think Neil himself would laugh, and if he wouldn't, screw him.

And "Who is Neil Young...." I guess we better figger this out for him, since he seems not to know, himself. Nor does his sense of who he THINKS he is, work well for me.

The most incredible live rock performance on TV (since the Beatles on Ed Sullivan) was Neil Young doing "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" on Saturday Night Live a while back. Talk about crazed!!! He had THAT LOOK in his eyes and he was playing to save his life and our soul. And you could tell that the rhythm section and second guitarist were right there with him. In that one performance you could see the magic and mystery of Neil Young. Completely submerged in the music and pulling everyone in with him. If you get the chance to see it - SEE IT. And turn the volume up. Then listen to him do "Harvest Moon" a couple of years later. How can you not love the guy?

I never saw the movie, but to carry on the connection...

The Rosalie Sorrels album for which Hunter Thompson wrote the liner notes was "Travelin' Lady."

The album on which Rosalie recorded the Sylvia Tyson song was "Travelin' Lady Rides Again."

The liner notes for "Travelin' Lady Rides Again" were written by Oscar Zeta Acosta.

Oscar Zeta Acosta (aka the Brown Buffalo) was Hunter Thompson's "attorney."

Why I know all that is another story.

i think that neil youngs long and varied career has something for alot of different types of people ,he does lots of quiet acoustic singersongwriter songs (harvest old man ,only love can break your heart, heart of gold, harvest moon etc) he does long electric guitar workouts (cortez the killer, like a hurricane, down by the river, cowgirl in the sand) he does wierd off the wall expermental albums (trans, everybodys rocking,arc,re-act-or) and he does some great straight ahead material (powderfinger, dont cry no tears, keep on rocking in the free world, big time) also protest stuff (ohio, this notes for you, albahama, southern man) and also one of the greatest so called concept albums of all time "tonights the night" . he continues to vary his approach from album to album and tour to tour without ever allowing his music to grow stale ....plus he is a good guitarist maybe that is part of the reason people hold him in high regard .................but then there are those who dont so what you gonna do???

Played in a NY tribute band for a couple of years, between celtoid gigs and singer/songwriter excursions. Great fun and great tunes. Our "Neil" was pretty convincing when he wanted to be. Our favourite jokes involved the confusion some folks have with Young and Diamond and dare I say it Neil Sadaka (sp?). Bikers loved us. Old folks danced to Transformer Man. Chicks love Heart of Gold. I quit the band last year, but I still do Mansion on the Hill and I'm the Ocean myself, one's too short, the other too long, but both worthy.

Yeah, I wish I had Neil's collection of guitars too. Put me in the "love 'im" side of the ledger. Mooh.

Last July you wrote: "There are 2 kinds of people in the world. Those that love Neil Diamond and those that hate him. Now, Neil Young, that's a whole different matter."

Correct. With Neil Young, it's the other way around...

This thread is responsible for my Mudcat addiction. I came to the forum looking for music, and stumbled upon this thread.

I've been stuck in here ever since.

'Outpatient', Little Hawk? Are you sure? Anyway, I'm the Inactivity Director at the NYCFTTS.

If the BDFFTPAEOPWCSC want me, they'll have to pay extra.

Confessions first. I've enjoyed Neil Young for thirty years or so and part of the attraction is that you never know what he is going to do next.

What worries me about some of the entries in this thread is that people have never heard him and are avoiding doing so because other people have said they don't like him. What sort of narrow minded conformism is that?

There is only music. The categories are jsut what we put onto it. There are people whose whole output I have disliked and then they just do one great number and it makes the other listening worthwhile. You don't have to like Neil Young but I do think he deserves a listen. Ditto Neil Diamond.

You're right, Swan. I like a great deal of what Neil Young has recorded in his lengthy career, loved the early albums, and some of the later ones too.

As for Neil Diamond, I dislike his more melodramatic stuff, but he has done some genuinely good songs too, from my point of view.

As for Neil Diamond, I believe that some of his early tunes, ie Thank the Lord for the Nighttime, Cherry, Solitary Man were great acoustic rock songs. When he entered the Sweet Caroline, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Band, Cracklin' Rosie phase, you could see trouble coming. I Am I Said, You Don't Bring Me Flowers, and the god-awful Jonathan Livingston Seagull album turned him into some kind of nightclub parody of himself.

Once again, I will have to completely agree with you Leej. A pretty fair summation of Neil Diamond's career.

Just noticed the cartoonist link no longer goes to a cartoon about Neil Young. For those that have never heard Neil Young (and you must be young), don't take all this joshing too seriously.

Come on, LEJ, "I Am I Said" ranks right up there with Hamlet's Soliloquy. It's absolutely deathless! I mean, what would the chair have said...had it deigned to speak??? I've wondered about that for years...

And now you've offended the JLS fans too, you heartless swine! :-) (I liked the book, but it's not everyone's cup of tea).

"I ain't, I'm dead"
"I ain't", I said
And no one heard, or spoke one word
Not even the bed

"I ain't", I cried
"I ain't", said I
To nothing overhead
Not even the sky

You take it from there, Spaw, I can't recall the verses...

Well, when I hear of Neil Young I think of an odd encounter I once had... I was giving my worm colony to a woman who had answered my ad, and I sang her a song I had written about worms. This woman's boyfriend was present and listened to the song.

After the song I learned that the boyfriend was a professional guitar player, working in some blues and jazz bands. He proceeded to make a speech - entirely unsolicited and virtually uninterrupted - for about forty-five minutes straight while I smiled and nodded; it was an indepth analysis of my strengths and weaknesses as a singer and guitarist, and some recommendations for the future. (Just sober enough to speak coherently, but just stoned enough to make intense speeches to virtual strangers, I suspect.)

Anyway, his main two points were that I should, one, throw away my classical guitar and get a steel string, and two, listen to early Neil Young.

A response from the wall

This song is shit
And you're bringing down
All the good stuff you've writ!"

Neil - We are ALL in serious need of a life! Why do you think we log in here day after day, hour upon hour, and attempt to impress, entertain, or convert one another with obscure political harangues, wordy song analyses, and humorous BS? Would people with a life be doing this? Hell no! I was in the "3rd world" a while back, and nobody I saw was doing this, and they had a healthy, lively attitude that I envied. Not a friggin' computer or a McDonalds in sight! Good home cooking at every meal. And get this...the poor suckers all want to come to North America and eat microwaved shit! Unbelievable. The propaganda seems to be working all too well...

Hey, man, we pampered corporate slaves in North America can't all be major achievers like you, and still have that half-crazed look in our eyes as we stagger onstage, and get paid big bucks for it, and have fictional mental institutions named after us. Have some compassion! :-)

By the way, I loved "Comes A Time" and "Thrasher"!

Cheers,

- LH
