There are times when I get so into watching the person that I think my actual "listening sensors" go into automode and unless something that is glaringly out of place or extremely beautiful happens, I just tend to absorb the sound. I watch the player(s) and check out everything from brands to the way they hold it, pick it, hammer it, bow it, or whatever. Are they playing that brand because they like it or is there a buck in it? Why does he/she hold the instrument that way? Jay Ungar and Molly Mason were in town the other night along with daughter Ruth (who did some fine harmonies...she's like 20 or so now?...I feel old). Anyway, in watching and listening to Molly, it dawned on me how "right" the Gibson sounded and equally what a GREAT fiddler's guitarist she is. Most of her style is built around playing with that fiddler for the past 20 years or so, and she is simply superb at it!!! Melodic counterpoints and bass runs that were so tasteful that I was almost moved to go into Meebo mode and jump up and shout, "Molly RULES!!!" BTW, speaking of Ashoken Farewell, Jay remarked at the number of people who have written and told him over the years how affected they were by the song. He said how surprised he was at their response and that to him it was simply "a Scottish lament written by a Jewish guy from the Bronx." Spaw |

Has fingers eight inches long, which helps explain some of his interesting guitar techniques--triple string bends and stuff. Just his hands would be the video I'd want to watch. Saw the fiddle ensemble Shetland's Young Heritage a few years ago...wonderful group of a dozen or so young Shetlanders. Most of them look like somewhat shy teenagers onstage...but there was one blonde lassie who stuck out by always having a great smile and kind of hopping around with the musical flow--I love seeing young performers really having a good time. I think her name is Claire White. Natalie M, without question. And speaking of great grins, gobs of talent and general gusto: Sharon Shannon! W-O

Willie Nelson is another. Gave his everything every time I've seen him, played for hours, the band is rock solid. I enjoyed seeing Neil Young in '78. I was expecting a mellow, folky show and instead got the Rust Never Sleeps tour. And the last two times I've seen Dylan he was fantastic. |

I saw MacMaster last Spring perform in Berkeley, and she is every bit the dancer she is the fiddler. An amazing step dancer! Alasdair Fraser is another who puts his whole body into it when he performs. On the pop music end of things, Mariah Carey is so stunningly beautiful I enjoy watching her perform even though the music doesn't stick with me. |

It was great seeing them at Falconridge- they do best in an intimate venue (that way you can watch Chuck's eyebrows dance). The first set they did was on the huge mainstage and it lacked the intimacy they do best- only the front rows could see their antics. But later they performed in the dance tent and the crowd went totally wild. Even they were amazed- I saw Helene mouth "wow" at Louise during one long, shouting standing-o. I wish they performed more often in the US. I got a chance to chat with Chuck at Old Songs and asked him why- he said their American agent wasn't as good as their overseas one. So, any club owners here- ask for Barachois! (That number again: www.barachois.com!) |

A local singer Sara Hickman is always a hoot in person. She must have the worlds biggest smile. And from Denton Texas a group called Brave Combo { winner of this years Grammy for polka } is a joy to behold. When they polka to "Purple Haze" { Jimi Hendrix } and "People Are Strange" { the Doors } you can't stay in your seat - you just have to dance. They will be up in the Northeast soon. Has there ever been anyone who got a bigger kick out of having such a voice and being such a ham? I saw him early in his career the first time he came to Toronto's Massey Hall, and the audience was full of Italians (he hadn't become an icon yet). They just bathed in each other for a couple of hours. I have never seen anything like it before or since. I always love watching him, even when he sings Three Tenors crap. Can't help it. One of the most disappointing performers (relatively) live is Emmylou Harris, for whom I have the greatest everything. She never seems to be there. But I love to watch him because he just loves to play. One of the best live shows I ever saw was Midnight Oil, about 12 years ago. It was July, there was no air in the club, and it was damn hot. They rocked. And I got to meet them afterwards and they were Nice. I have never been a big Stones fan but we watched the Bridges to Babylon thing on PBS during the fund drive. I really loved it. I love to watch John McEuen, too. Not only is he a String Wizard, but he's a big ol' nut. |

But I do enjoy outdoor, folksy concerts; I just don't watch the stage if I can help it. Do you have artists whose music you may love, hate, or be neutral about, but YOU JUST LOVE WATCHING THEM PERFORM??? Neil Young has always hit me that way. I love watching the guy. Its akin to watching car crashes I suppose. In "Heavy Rocker Mode" its like seeing a completely psychotic episode take place before your very eyes. Roger McGuinn, again all talent aside, does that "head bobbing" thing that looks like one of those statues with the head on a spring, sitting in the rear window of a '63 Chevy.
