Excellent song! Here are the chords, at least how I do them, since the guitar in the songs only suggests chords, and never really plays them.

COWSONG

Words & Music by Kate Rusby

  D.....................G
There was a farm on yonder hill
.....D................G.....A
Up where the wind it blows-O
.......Bm...........G
There lived a lady and her son
.......A...............G
And a bonny old brown cow-O

This cow was a bonny cow
But they needed money more so
She said to her son "Please take the cow
To Market you will go-O"

So he's walked a long long
He's walked but half the day-O
And there spied a sweet young maid
She says "Where are you bound-O?"

................A............Asus4
I'll take this cow along the way
.......Em........G
And I will sell her on
........D
Market Day

"You see this bonny cow of mine?
I'm taking her to Market-O
Then I'll return to my mother dear
With money in me hand-O"

She's took this young man's arm
She says "You handsome sir-O
Come sit you down in the soft green grass
Come rest a while with me-O

.....D........G
With me
.....D........G
With me"
Bm.......G......A.......G

She's kissed him strong, she's kissed him long
A fair game she did play-O
And after playing not-so-hard
This young man he gave way-O

I'll take this cow along the way
And then I will sell her on
Market Day

And when this young man woke
Both girl and cow were gone-O
And also were the shoes he wore
And the trousers he had on-O

O come all young men near and far
Never heed a maiden's calling
Never trust a girl with your mother's cow
Never let your trousers fall

D...
Falling down in the green grass
G....................D..
Falling down in the green grass
D...
Falling down in the green grass
D......
Falling down in the green grass
G.....................D
Falling down in the green grass

(repeat many happy times!)

Could any one tell me if cow song is trad or written by Kate Rusby? Because it's a bonus track on sleepless there wasn't much information in the album cover and I can't find anything clear anywhere else. Cheers.

Kate sings Cowsong in the key of B on 10. I'm learning it on capo 2 playing A, but suspect it is more interesting played in B as the guitarist on the recording does it.

Okay here's what I have from the recording on "10"

On the verses its basically Bmaj7 (I chord, for those who like to transpose) to E (add 2 if you like, on the high E string, second fret) (IV chord) then C#m (ii) and back to E (IV). The bridge is F# (or a simple IV chord) then back to B (I chord). Absolutely beautiful in that key, so worth it for me to get better with my B fingering.

Enjoy. Awesome song. :-)

Keep in mind that Kate usually plays guitar in double-drop D tuning, which means that if you try to sound like her in standard tuning, you'll have problems. When you see her play, you notice that her fingerings are dead simple. Try tuning DADGBD.
