It covers a pretty wide range, and I also don't think Stan sang it in the best key for most people's voices--I know when I sing it a capella, I move it down some, and when I sing along with the tape I'm really pushing it during the chorus. |

Well I don't know most of the other songs mentioned, but still... Is 'The Rose' too simple for english speaking people? Does it sound too sweetish to them? Did they simply hear it too often? Please mind that these are real questions I don't know the answer, I am not trying to provoke anybody. There is a german version and Joan Baez once did it. But as most translations of songs it suffered and it does sound sweetish in german (bad thing for every good song). In english it seems ok to me AND I LOVE THAT SONG. In english. How about "Tree" (the version on the first album rather than the one on Liquid Acrobat), "Painting Box" on 5000 Spirits, "Witch's Hat" on Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, "Lordly Nightshade" on Wee Tam and the Big Huge, "Bridge Song" on U, "Red Hair" on Liquid Acrobat, "Sunday Song" and "Seagull" on Earthspan (love that Heron and McKechnie combo!), "This Moment" on I Looked Up . . . really, it's an embarrassment of riches we're dealing with here, and I guess this post means I've just come out of the ISB fanatic closet. . . but right this very moment I am totally entranced with Dylan's "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." After hearing THE most gifted player do MEC, I taught myself the 'wrong' melody the next evening and it is SO hard to change a song that you learn wrong. Also, MEC needs to be sung with GUSTO. Others that come immediately to mind are "How Can I Keep From Singing", which may be a little to 'hymn-like' for you, but is beautiful, nonetheless. (I have this sneaking suspicion I may have posted it there, cause it has my initials at the bottom. But I don't remember doing it at all. Please, somebody tell me you did it and my memory is not totally failing...) It was written by Luther Schutz, who is an emergency physician in Washington state. (I used to know the name of the town he's in, too....) Anyway, I'm always partial to songs written by doctors. But it is a truly wonderful song, that I first heard sung by Richard Scholtz and members of Motherlode at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop in 1986. It's worth learning if you can find the music. I guess that since I play for folkies, There are often a few outspoken ones that make you feel like you are a religious fanatic when you sing more that one a year... hard to take from a young audience. |

Also, though I was "rocker" for many years,... I have sort of picked up the pieces of my roots, and moved backwards into the traditions that I grew up with. Its like I'm not satisfied with contemporary music unless it is firmly based in folk foundations. It is true, I think, and it can be argued with great force, that grunge pop is expressing todays feelings effectively, as is rap, industrial, way out jazz, and even country... But as for me, I want magic that is soooo strong, that it needs only a clear voice, an acoustic instrument, and people open and close... harmonising without even trying to.
