Subject: Gay and Gallant Caballeros From: Downeast Bob Date: 26 Jul 00 - 09:41 PM A guitar-playing pal, now deceased, used to sing an interesting song romanticizing the life of some Spanish-speaking revolutionaries (or maybe bandits) living out in the mountains. All I can remember:
We're waiting and watching Anybody know this one? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gay and Gallant Caballeros From: Tiger Date: 31 Jul 00 - 12:19 PM The title is definitely "Bandolero", but not the Mariachi version of the same name. Bob..... I found a songbook ("Songs of Yale") that has it, at: http://www.cdworld.com/cgi-bin/prodinfo?M50327140&7065137 Also, a German barbershop CD at: http://www.barbershop-boys.de/tontrg.htm I'm in the process of contacting some of the members of my college singing group to see if we can locate it. Interestingly, I must have it somewhere in my reel-to-reel archives, as I helped them record a demo tape in the early sixties. Doubt if I can find it, but I'll try. Finally, I've got my barbershop maven on the case. Stay tuned! .....Tiger |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gay and Gallant Caballeros From: Downeast Bob Date: 31 Jul 00 - 01:31 PM Tiger, you are amazing. I am a pretty decent researcher, but your tenacity, knowledge and use of resources blow me away. Before I rush out and buy the Yale songbook, I'll wait and see what else you come up with. Best, Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gay and Gallant Caballeros From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Oct 02 - 10:49 PM Click here for a biography of Thomas Augustine Barrett a.k.a. Leslie Stuart (b Southport, Lancashire, 15 March 1863; d Richmond, Surrey, 27 March 1928), composer of a song called "The Bandolero" (1894) "introduced by the Irish baritone Foli". CDNOW has a 1-minute sound sample of a performance by Peter Dawson, from which I transcribed this: Gallant señors, sweet señoras, pray forgive this bold intrusion, But my role could not permit me to acquaint you I was near. When the ransom you have paid me, on your journey safe continue. Don't resist me, don't refuse me. Who am I? ... and hear: I am the bandolero, the gallant bandolero. I rule the mountains and I ... Downeast Bob is probably no longer paying attention, but Tiger may be... Is this the same song you were referring to back in July, 2000? |
