SEND IT DOWN HUGHIE
G'day, In another thread I promised Patrish to find words for The Parson and the Clerk. They were in Mulga Wire/Singabout #13, pS2 and next to them was this beaut song written by the same person who sang the other song.

'Duke' quietly averred that this was the origin of the Australian phrase "Send it down, Hughie" ... a request for rain (or, later. good surf), (which led some public intellectual to remark that: "Only the Australians would presume to address the Deity by His first name!).

Words: 'Duke' Tritton / (& 'Dutchy' Bishop)
Tune: Swing Me Just A Little Bit Higher, Obadiah Do

Halfway through the shearing and the weather was very dry,
But the clouds were gathering fast and low down in the sky,
Just as we were having a smoke a shower came over the plain,
And we heard from the shearing shed the rousies' roaring refrain.
Send it down a little bit harder , dear old Hughie do.
Send it down a little bit harder, and we'll love you.
Send it down for a week or two, all the rousies will stick like glue,
Just a little bit harder, dear old Hughie do.

It is known as the rouseabout's prayer, its been sung in every shed,
When the sheep are too wet to shear, the rousies get board and bed
And their pay goes on if it's wet or dry, so they haven't a worry or care,
And they lie in their bunks and sleep or read, or sing the rouseabout's prayer.

Ten points of rain and the shearers vote on whether it's wet or dry,
And if they decide to shear you will hear the rousies' sigh,
"Spare me days," you will hear them say, "There's frogs in the blanky wool,
And they stare at the counting pens and sing for their hearts are full.

When the rain is tumbling down the shearers grumble and curse,
And the boss goes around with a hungry look for it hits them in the purse,
So he prowls around the shed all day, like a bull in a stockyard ring,
And grinds his teeth in futile rage when he hears the rouseabouts sing.

This was composed in 1906, by 'Duke' Tritton at Charlton where 'Duke' first heard the words "Send her down Hughie". The chorus was written by 'Dutchy' Bishop, and the verses were the work of 'Duke' himself. 'Duke' was working as a shearer – paid on a 'piecework' basis and paying for board. 'Dutchy' was a rouseabout (a general shed hand) and working for wages with bed and board found. Rouseabouts enjoyed time off on full pay ... shearers lost money!

The song should never be sung light heartedly as it is extremely effective. This song really works!

G'day Patrish,

If you follow the link (to Alan of Australia's website) that is in the MIDIText, you can down load the simple program that converts MIDIs to text for Mudcat posting and converts Mudcat text files back to MIDIs you can play on your computer (usually!).

Alternatively, Alan has a MIDI site (listed in the Mudcat resources) and I WILL send him these MIDIs so he can (please!) post them and you can obtain the MIDI by right clicking on the title and saving to your computer.

Regards,

Bob Bolton
