Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 15 Aug 00 - 08:34 AM Wow! What a great looking bunch! Thanks so much for posting the pics, Jed. Did you use a digital camera? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can make it next Wednesday. I do need directions, though. Can anyone tell me the way to get to the YOBB from Arlington (near 360 and Ye Olde Turnpike)? -- Áine |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: JedMarum Date: 15 Aug 00 - 02:01 AM Well, it's almost still Monday night in Dallas ... I almost made it with the posting of pics from the Mudcatter's gathering in Fort Worth by the promised date. The link is here and it will take you to the Eammon's Kitchen (EK) website where pics are posted from our last Wed night gathering in Fort Worth. We hope to get an even greater turn out next session on Wed Aug 23 ... even more pics, and maybe we can even get a quorum in early enough to give Max, Bert and Mary a call! I hope I spelled all the names right. Please let me know if you see any errors. Been watching the Dems Convention tonight, and started this pic posting effort a bit too late! |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: JedMarum Date: 11 Aug 00 - 10:01 PM LEJ - ya might hafta bring that Radio Shack crowd with ya! ;-) Branwen we promise not to have any fun before you get there - well, maybe just a little bit ... Now, let's get Bert to join us. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Branwen23 Date: 11 Aug 00 - 03:08 PM ok... I'll try and make it on the 23rd, also, but I won't be able to get there until probably about 9:30.... -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Lonesome EJ Date: 11 Aug 00 - 02:42 PM We'll be at the Radisson Plaza,815 Main in Ft Worth. There will probably be some kind of Radioshack dinner that night, but we could grab a taxi over afterwards. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Wesley S Date: 11 Aug 00 - 02:29 PM Aine and Branwen23 - Let me echo what Jed said that this is a loose comfortable session. I was really worried that it was going to be run by a bunch of trad experts and that there would be a lot of rules ect. It was not that at all. No one will force you to get up and sing. If you just want to sit over in the corner, play chess and sing along on the occasional chorus you'll fit in also. It was a no pressure atmosphere. And besides you already know some of the folks that will be there. You just haven't met them yet. Hope to see you there. Lonesome EJ - I'm very local to the Bull and Bush. Feel free to PM me at wsmith@lokeyiron.com. I'll be able to give you directions if you let me know where you're staying. Or perhaps pick you up if you don't have a car. I could get you there but I'll be leaving early. Let me know. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 11 Aug 00 - 02:10 PM Yeah! If we add Branwen, Áine, LEJ to the mix, we have oursleves a real Mudcat Hap'nin' I'm looking forward to it! I hope to have pics posted of this week's session by Monday night. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 11 Aug 00 - 01:04 PM Sorry about sounding like a whiney titty baby, y'all. But Branwen expressed my nervousness exactly as I'm feeling it. But seeing's how Jed says that "kazoos, singers, pickers, grinners, listeners, drinkers, (and) tea-totalers" are welcome -- well, I guess I just have to show up with my kazoo and potato whistle, don't ya know! ;-) And I have to see LEJ and get one of Mimosa's CDs, too. If Branwen promises to keep me company in the corner (ha!), I'll do my best to be there on the 23th. And Jed, I want to hear your 'under the shady tree with the Whippets' song, OK? -- Áine |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 11 Aug 00 - 01:04 PM ... by the way, this is not a professional environment by any stretch! It is a loosely organized fun atmosphere ... there are a ot of folks just sitting in, some sing, some just listen, some play, some play sometimes .... very few know the songs the song leader is playing ... it is a fun crowd - NOT a professional crowd. I promise you anyone will feel welcome, even just to sit and listen. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Branwen23 Date: 11 Aug 00 - 12:59 PM Sorry, that should be "I'm sure everyone would love it if you came, ALSO" |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Branwen23 Date: 11 Aug 00 - 12:58 PM Aine... I know what you mean about it sounding too professional... I was invited to a "every other wednesday" session at the Barnes and Noble in Arlington once... I thought it sounded weird to begin with, having it in a bookstore and all, but I showed up anyway... My fears were realized... A bunch of people I didn't know, and these people showed up with music stands and sheet music... I was completely out of my element. Somehow, though, I don't see that happening so much with this crowd... I do feel a little of your nervousness, though. I think I'll try to show up at least once just to see how it goes. I'm sure everyone would love it if you came, alos. I know I would. -Branwen-

Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 11 Aug 00 - 12:50 PM LEJ - You need get yer selves out to the Bull and Bush for the session; kazoos, singers, pickers, grinners, listners, drinkers, tea-totalers ... all are welcome! Let's stay in touch closer to the date. We'll figure out how to get you there and back! |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Lonesome EJ Date: 11 Aug 00 - 12:41 PM It so happens my wife and I will be in FtWorth on August 23 for a Radioshack Showcase. I haven't seen our events schedule yet, but maybe we can get to the Bull and Bush. Anyone going? Shall I have Lynne bring her kazoo? |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 11 Aug 00 - 12:35 PM Yep, mimosa; next one's 8/23. Doug - I haven't made any plans yet, to get back to AZ. I will be making the long range plans soon, though - it seem likely that early next spring I'll get back there. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa Date: 11 Aug 00 - 11:35 AM Aine, we were all asking about you and hoping you'd show some time. Please don't stay away. I always bring the CDs with me wherever I go. I had them in my case. Doew this only happen every other week, so the next one's 8/23? Mimosa |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: DougR Date: 10 Aug 00 - 09:58 PM Jed: Somehow I knew you started this thread. When you coming back out out way? DougR |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 10 Aug 00 - 06:12 PM I'm so glad that some of you were able to get together and it sounds like everyone had a great time. Can't wait to hear more 'Texas session' stories. But, to tell y'all the truth, all this sounds way over my head -- too professional, if ya know what I mean. I think I'll be content with just hearing about it. Wouldn't want to be the bump on the session 'log' so to speak. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Wesley S Date: 10 Aug 00 - 05:59 PM Branwen - Been there - done that. I'm SO glad to out of retail. I've got a "normal" job now. No nights, no holidays, no weekends. I'd forgotten what it was like to be off on a holiday like the 4th of July. You have my sympathies. We'll keep a space open for you. Hope to see and meet you then. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Branwen23 Date: 10 Aug 00 - 05:35 PM I work in retail and when I close the store, i work until nine.... one of these days, i'll make it... -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Wesley S Date: 10 Aug 00 - 05:29 PM I left that part out of the PM I sent you but I know it will be on Friday Sept 22nd in downtown Ft Worth. I think the tickets will be about $15.00. You'll need to bring a copy of a tape that we can give to the promoter of this show so he'll hire you sometime. I was checking some old posts and found out that Mimosa has his own CD out ! We'll need to twist his arm to bring some to the next session. Take care - Wesley Smith |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: JedMarum Date: 10 Aug 00 - 05:04 PM Thanks for posting the mandolin info, Wesley. That was a fine instrument and I look forward to hearing moe of you playing it! Likewise for Mimosa and his harp. Last night was a bit looser then the last one I went to ... I like a loose crowd, but I like to see the music flow PDQ with little breathing room in between! But we're new at it ... so it'll take time to adjust. We need to figure out how to get in early and catch Bert, Max and MaryMac on Mudcat radio. See you soon - and be sure to keep me informed about your upcoming show with Liv Taylor. I'd love to be there,a nd want to be sure to keep my calendar clear, if possible. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Wesley S Date: 10 Aug 00 - 04:28 PM I had a great time last night as well. It was the first Irish session I've had a chance to sit it on so I was not sure what to expect but it looked like everyone had a good time. I was a bit concerned that there would be a lot of very trad minded folks there and that my chops wouldn't be up to the task as I'm still rather new to the mandolin. I learned a lot - it was good for me. Next time I'll be prepared with a couple of songs. Mimosa was indead a pleasure to hear - quite a talent with a great voice. I hope we all get together again. By the way my mandolin is from Weber - the Bridger model. It's made by the same folks who used to make Flatiron mandolins in Montana. And whoever it was that bought a round of drinks for the musicians - thanks a lot. Jed - I'll PM you with a couple of ideas today or tomorrow. It's been a zoo today at work or I would have posted sooner. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: JedMarum Date: 10 Aug 00 - 09:20 AM Just a quick update on the evenig's hap'nin's - we did have a "Mudcatter event" at Ye Old Bull and Bush (no relation to the Georges, I assure you) in Fort Worth last night. Wesley S and Mimosa joined Guinness Chick (frequent Mudcat visitor, rare poster) and me at the pub's session. We will have photos available very soon. The session was a bit off last night, a bit loud, a bit unfocused at times - but it was fun never-the-less. Wesley brought along his exquistite mandolin (I forgot the maker's name, sorry) and Mimos brought his unusually shaped, lovely sounding 20 string harp. Both played along on whatever tune was called, and both added quite a bit to the musicianship. Mimosa led some beautiful renditions of Black is the Color, Danny Boy, and others. He is a truly well trained, gifted singer and harpist. We need you Áine and Branwen23 - two weeks from lst night, we'll try again. If we can figure out how to get there at 6:30, we can plan a call into Mudcat Radio. One of these Weds, we need to get us all there at once! Any more, I'll get pics posted ASAP, and send some into the Mudcat Resource page. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Branwen23 Date: 09 Aug 00 - 09:07 PM not going to be able to make it this week, I'm afraid... Had a late rehearsal last night, and I need my beauty sleep. Maybe next week... -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 09 Aug 00 - 12:14 PM bert - I was going to talk to the folks at the session about calling in to the radio show (like we did for a while from the Quill). But tonight they start at 7;30, and in Celtic time that means 8 or 8:30 and that's also Central time zone. So in short, I'd have to convince the session folks to get there pretty early. Still I intended to float the idea tonight, and see if we could get a quorum together for two weeks from tonight. Wadda ya think? Maybe then we could get Aine to show!!!
|
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 09 Aug 00 - 12:06 PM And I hope you'll all say a 'Sláinte!' for me while you're at it! -- Áine (who's in a serious pout now 'cuz she can't come tonight...) |

Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 09 Aug 00 - 08:42 AM Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this week (dang, dang, and double dang!). I'm looking forward to hearing all about it tomorrow, though, so everybody take copious notes! ;-) And if somebody can remember to bring along a camera, we could even put the Yee-haw Texas Mudcatter faces in the special events section on the Mudcat Resources page. So y'all remember to wear your Stetsons, snakeskin boots and armadillo t-shirts, OK? -- Áine |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Wesley S Date: 08 Aug 00 - 12:43 PM I should be able to make it. But it will have to be on the early side. My wife won't be there - second hand smoke isn't the best thing for a pregnant woman. I'll be the chubby guy with glasses and a pony tail. Looking forward to it. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 08 Aug 00 - 12:32 PM Yeah - we'll be goin late, fer sure!! As I said; they were going strong when I left at midnight last time! Please come on out. I am sure we'll have a few of the Eammons Kitchen folks there too ... |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Branwen23 Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:43 AM This Wed I work until 9 pm.... but if you say it's still going at midnight, I guess i could try to get over to Ft. Worth.... -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:29 AM OK - we'll be lookin' for you! And I promise you'll enjoy yorself! Now - any more Mudcatters comin'??? |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:14 AM I'm going to try to make this. I haven't done anything like this before, and would love you 'catters there to talk to me if you see me there. I'll bring my little dark purple harp, so you shouldn't have any trouble recognizing me. Mimosa |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Jed at Work Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:06 AM ... well, actually they were still going strong> when I left at midnight. (once again I prove my typographic challenged nature)! |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: JedMarum Date: 08 Aug 00 - 08:48 AM OK - this Wed; Aug 9 ... come on out to the pub, and bring your ax and/or your voice! It gets going about 7:30 or 8:00 and they were still going string when I left at midnight last time. Good folks, good music, good drink! Addr and phone no are in the orignial thread. Please come on out! |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Terry Allan Hall Date: 29 Jul 00 - 10:26 AM I'll certainly get down there next time I have a Wednesday night free! |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Branwen23 Date: 28 Jul 00 - 02:21 PM I usually work on Wed nights, also, but will try to make it out when i can.... i think i'm actually not working this next wed... sounds groovy... -Branwen- |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 27 Jul 00 - 12:14 PM You're on for the Guinness, Wesley!! ;-) -- Áine |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Wesley S Date: 27 Jul 00 - 11:43 AM I'm up for it - just name the time or place. And that Guinness { or whatever } offer is good for you too Aine { sorry I missed your post or you would have gotten it earlier }. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 27 Jul 00 - 11:31 AM Hey y'all -- Do I see some potential for a DFW Mudcatter get together here, or what? ;-) -- Áine |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Wesley S Date: 27 Jul 00 - 11:26 AM Dang - I live about 2 miles from the Bull and Bush and I just sat home last night and watched a movie. Jed - you better let me know the next time you're there or you won't get the free Guinness { or whatever } I'm now offering. Are any of these brothers from Eammons Kitchen or Brothers Three?? Keep us informed. PS - You might want to circle your calender for Friday Sept 22. My group gets to do a short opening set for Livingston Taylor here in Ft Worth. |
Subject: RE: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: Áine Date: 27 Jul 00 - 11:22 AM Thanks, Jed! This is great news for the DFW area. And I might even be able to get over to this session some time. I'd like some more information about what was sung and played at the session, though. I'll send you a PM. -- Áine |
Subject: New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks From: JedMarum Date: 27 Jul 00 - 10:39 AM I expect this to be a short lived thread, but I know there are a few Mudcatters out there wanting to know about good sessions in the area. I attended a session last night at The Bull and Bush (2300 Montgomery in Fort Worth - 817 731 9206). The sessionis less then a month old, from what I can tell, and is an open format of Celtic 'sing songs' (as they call it) Jigs and Reels, and eventually just about anything. It is run by a pair of brothers and their friends, good players, knowledgable, fun loving and very freindly. The pub has a pretty loyal following of mixed ages from the area University (TCU) crowd - and the crowd gets involved, singing, listening, dancing ... great folks, great craic ... Those of you in the area looking for a good session need to check it out. They start about 8PM and a good group was still going when I left at midnight. I work pretty often on Wed, so won't be able to make it a regular night, but I hope y'all check it out (and if ya do, let me know, maybe I can adjust my schedule). Great place!! |
