Here's your chance to tell me where to go...

OK, so I'll be in Calgary, Alberta from August 6 to 11. What should I do while I'm there?

(I kind of like folk music.)

Thanks, Marion

Don't know bout folk, but in that time there should be a lot of rodeos. A lot of them with music ofcourse. If you're not from around there, that COULD be fun to go to. I remember how relaxed and easygoing Canadians are, I love those people! Don't go to the Calgary stampede though, much to big. Betwwen Calgary and Red Deer are lots of small *villes where it's good to be. Yo.

If you like folk dancing, here is the link. I notice that there is free outdoor dancing on Wednesdays during the summer.

Unfortunately you missed the Calgary Folk Festival, and the Calgary Stampede (yes, it's big, but it's possible to find interesting bits, including Cowboy Poetry).

My daughter is getting married August 6, and I'm leaving for Ontario August 7, so there's no point in giving you my phone number. Also, things tend to slow down on the folk scene in the summer. Get a Thursday copy of the Calgary Herald, and check the Hit List (but your visit will be almost over by then).

If you like Celtic sessions, try the James Joyce Saturday afternoons, Henry the Eighth or Tullamore Wednesday evenings.

If you can manage an hour's drive west of town, the Canmore Heritage Days Folk Festival (one of my favourites) is on that weekend, August 5 to 7. You might run into my daughter and her husband on their honeymoon, too.

Check out this website too: http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~bmccombs/calfolk/default.htm. Barry McCombs maintains an events listing.

Hope you find something to your liking.

You're in luck! Eric Bogle is in town Wednesday, Aug. 9. It's a concert or concert/dinner setup. You can email karmapresents@yahoo.com -- maybe you can reserve a ticket in advance. Or phone (403) 217-7955. The venue is South Calgary Community Assn.

I had the dates wrong: my daughter's wedding is August 5 (thus no session at the James Joyce that aft., due to the wedding party; but who says the guests won't spontaneously break out instruments...). I leave the next day.

There are also folk & Celtic jams at Friar's Pub, Wednesdays & Saturdays.

That should give you something to go on, for starters.

Thanks all. I'm off tomorrow (for a wedding, too).

I'm curious: Did you get in any music while you were here? (I heard the Eric Bogle concert was moved when the organizers did a last-minute backout.)
