Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Gervase Date: 28 Jul 00 - 04:57 AM Rolling Home (The John Tams version) - but mainly because it's often the last song of a session and I don't want the session to end. Otherwise anything sung by Chris Gorniak, a singer from Suffolk with the most beautiful deep voice and a lovely line in wistful songs - No More for Me, Bye-Bye Roseanna, Blessed Quietness etc.. He's a regular in the Middle Bar at Sidmouth and the Three Horseshoes' barn at Towersey, and is one of the reasons for me getting so passionate about singing rather than merely listening. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Noreen Date: 28 Jul 00 - 05:02 AM Mbo, 'Dimming of the Day' by Richard Thompson - I can still never get enough of it! Mickey, the song is called the Kilnamartra Exile, but I don't know of the recording you heard. I'll see what I can find out. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Noreen Date: 28 Jul 00 - 05:25 AM Mickey, the words are here: Kilnamartra Exile but nothing else so far. It is a beautiful song, and I'd like to find the recording you heard too. Which radio station- would they be able to help? Noreen |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Mbo Date: 28 Jul 00 - 07:29 AM The song I wish would never end I was just listening to last night, which is why I brought it up. It's called "L.O.D. (Love On Delivery)" by The Original Rondells, who were popular in the 60's, and are now part of our Carolina Beach Music scene. It reminds me of my girl...God I wish it would never end! |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: GUEST,Mickey 191 Date: 28 Jul 00 - 07:31 AM Noreen,I can't thank you enough-now I guess I can track down the lovely voice. The radio station in Hyde Park,N.Y.has no telephone listing. Hard to believe.Would I be too greedy if I asked about another song? ( for a cousin) She's not positive of the spelling - roughly" Abbe Shule"-about a child remembering school days, barefoot andcold, a real tearjerker. Thanks again. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: GUEST,Mickey191 Date: 28 Jul 00 - 07:54 AM Noreen, When you said the words are here, I thought you meant at this site. I tried the Mudcat scroll with no success. I just found this site last night-maybe There are other places I don't know about. Please help me out. Thanks from dumb Mickey. |

Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: GUEST,Mickey191 Date: 28 Jul 00 - 08:11 AM Matt, Thanks a Million, the internet is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I fear for all the stuff I don't know! |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: GUEST,Airto Date: 28 Jul 00 - 08:47 AM Mickey, The song your cousin is looking for is Abbeyshrule. The best known version is by Brendan Shine, who has the great artistic distinction (cynical nous, more like) of having released a song about every single county in Ireland. He killed three birds with the one stone when he recorded the gem "Lough Ree, O Lough Ree, where the three counties meet, Longford, Westmeath and Roscommon". Then he started on the towns/villages, which is where Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford comes in. A search using his name will throw up at least a dozen sites selling his albums. My own search failed to find a site containing the lyrics. Sorry about that. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Grab Date: 28 Jul 00 - 08:54 AM The Alchemy version of Sultans of Swing, and the full version of Telegraph Road. I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen. Move Along by Chris Isaak. No Preacher Blues by Davey Graham. And Paint It Black, of course. Folk-wise, any decent instrumental (Altan, Watersons, etc) can go on as long as it likes! Grab. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: SINSULL Date: 28 Jul 00 - 09:31 AM Funny Mbo. Last night I wandered onto Jon Freeman's website and felt exactly that about two pieces - one was Tam Lin (T the R needs to visit too), the other was some banjo music called "Rollercoaster" that Jon wrote for his brother. Of course I can't get enough of you doing Lorena but you hate to hear that. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Sean Belt Date: 28 Jul 00 - 10:34 AM The last couple of weeks, the songs I wish would never end are an old hymn, "Bright Morning Stars", and a fiddle tune I've been playing a lot called "Spotted Pony". Although now that some of you have mentioned "Rolling Home" that may break into my group as well. I'd forgotten what a good song it is. Bread & roses, -Sean |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Morticia Date: 28 Jul 00 - 10:47 AM I didn't think Tam Lin ever did end......two I've become extremely fond of ( by re-visiting them via Napster and isn't that a damn shame it's closing?) are Wicked Game by Chris Isaacs and Our House by Crosby, Stills, Nash and ( sorry Spaw) Young...... |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: GUEST,Fretless Date: 28 Jul 00 - 12:30 PM Following Sorcha and Banjo Johnny... It is, indeed, Ashoken. The tune Ashoken Farewell, used with such good effect in the Ken Burns video series on the Civil War, was written by Jay Ungar as the season closer at the music camp he runs annually in New York State (http://www.jayandmolly.com/camp.html). Later, it was incorporated into the video. The camp is one of the great traditional musical experiences of all time. Words to the tune were written by Grian McGregor, an Ashokan "camper." They're indexed in the Mudcat archive. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Mickey191 Date: 28 Jul 00 - 01:34 PM To AIRTO, Thanks so much for the full story of "Abbyshrule". I can surprise her withthe cd now that you've helped. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: kendall Date: 28 Jul 00 - 02:17 PM Mbo sings Lorena? all 6 verses? I recorded that for Folk Legacy back in the mid 70's. Benjamin Bowmaneer was recorded by Joe Hickerson for Folk Legacy back in the 60's I believe. Joe is the "Folk singers folksinger". |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: SINSULL Date: 28 Jul 00 - 02:20 PM Kendall sings Lorena? All 6 verses? And recorded it? CD Kendall? Or tell me when you'll do it on Hearme and I'll throw the guests out of the computer room. |

Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Noreen Date: 28 Jul 00 - 04:28 PM Mickey, how about writing to the radio station- you know, the old snail-mail? Might be worth a try. Welcome to the world of 'blue clickie things'- it's amazing where people can send you from this site! Don't be afraid to ask, someone will always try to help. Thanks, Mbo for stepping in. Callie, will you do 'Withered & Died' on HearMe sometime please? For as long as you like! (Once I was bending the tops of the trees.........mmmmm lovely) Noreen |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Marion Date: 28 Jul 00 - 04:38 PM Gypsy, is Stan Rogers' version of "Witch of the Westmereland" the full version? Or is there more I need to know about? I love that song too. Marion |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jul 00 - 12:10 AM Just a few words on this subject. Bob Dylan was asked once by an interviewer about which songs he liked by other people, and he said (among other things...) "Gordon Lightfoot...when I hear a Lightfoot song I want it to never end..." Pretty cool, eh? Kind words of praise from Bob. And it so happens that Gord is a very big Dylan fan as well, claiming that Dylan writes better stuff than he can. I believe these were sincere comments in both cases. |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: bob jr Date: 29 Jul 00 - 12:19 AM this thread title reminds me of the marx brothers scene i saw once chico (at the piano playing the same 4 chords over and over again ) its funny i can no think of the ending groucho that is funny i cant think of anything else |

Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Bagpuss Date: 29 Jul 00 - 06:01 AM Green Island - Christy Moore Fade Away - June Tabor All God's Angels - Kate Rusby And lots more. One tune I always wished would finish sooner was a set of slip jigs that I can't remember the name of at the moment. We played them for the strip the willow. We started out with a slower set like The Keel Row and then suddenly changed to slip jigs. The problem was that towards the end we played faster and faster until the dancers collapsed in a heap and my fingers fell off!! Bagpuss |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Margaret V Date: 29 Jul 00 - 09:18 AM Hey, Mickey, if you're in listening range of Hyde Park, we're probably neighbors. I'm in Cold Spring, where are you? Margaret |
Subject: RE: Songs You Wish Would Never End From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jul 00 - 10:33 AM Well, "It's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" is kind of like that, specially in a live concert, and it almost does never end... Likewise for "Desolation Row" and "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again". They aren't just songs...they're novelettes. |
