HEY FRETLESS....If you're still around, and others who mentioned Ashoken Farewell, we have run several threads regarding the song also and it gets mentioned quite a lot. Jay Ungar has "approved" two sets of lyrics.

I saw Jay and Molly with daughter Ruth last week here in Ohio. Three things stuck out, the first being Ruth. Grown up and with an immature yet, but beautiful voice and her duets with Molly were wonderful.

Second was Molly's playing. Her style is completely geared around playing with a fiddler and I was really overwhelmed with just how tasteful she is!!! Her counterpoints and bass runs were just perfect......just perfect!!! Beautiful. I got a "Meebo Rush" and almost shouted, "MOLLY RULES!!!"

Lastly was the statement Jay made prior to playing Ashoken. He said that over the years he has received thousands of letters and lyrics and people telling him what the song has meant to them and that it has been an overwhelming and unexpected response. He ended by saying that when asked to describe it, he always just says, "Its a Scottish lament, written by a Jewish guy from the Bronx."

Spaw

Noreen, I couldn't believe my eyes - you found my mystery singer, Niamh (pronounced Neeve) Parsons. After reading all the reviews, which are great, I can't be accused of exaggerating her talents. I've never seen reviews like those, and it appears the rest of the songs will be as beautiful. Talent is one lady singing almost unacompanied, for all to hear. Not someone all miked up, with 5 or 6 backup singers screaming like car sirens.(My Opinion) Thanks so much. Margaret V I live in Dover Plains, I have some of my Irish Crafts in a Cold Spring Shop.

Hey Marian, Archie Fisher wrote the Witch of the West Merlands, often times covered by others as Moorlands. Anyway, he wrote 20 verses, i've heard that one. Minstrels of Mayhem do a lovely cover, with about 12 verses. Am trying to convince the Husband who is the singer, he should sing all 20. Sigh. I'll play it for whomever will sing it, love that song. Haven't heard Rogers sing it.
