Subject: Review: LOTHLORIEN MP3 CD is GREAT!!

First time I have ever ordered anything through the MP3 site.

Nicole Leonard had started a thread called , Celtic Music CD on MP3, which attracted my attention. She was posting to let us know her New Zealand band, "Lothlorien" had put out their first cd on MP3.

I just received that CD, "Greenwood Side" and have had one run through, with the second playing right now. This is a really fine recording. The vocals are clear and haunting, without that whine through the nose sound some people get when they do "celtic" music. Nicole's voice is gorgeous, with excellent control and embellisments, light and airy contrasted with really strong and lusty on a couple of songs.

I was especially pleased to hear tight, right on harmonies, as well as beautiful instrumentation and playing.

The only complaint I have, and I suspect this is an MP3 thing, there is no info on the artists anywhere on the insert.

Some gorgeous songs, some well-known with Lothlorien arrangements which are superb; and, some written by members, including one written by Nicole and "C. Lloyd", "Ghostwood" a jig, "inspired" by the books of one of my favourite authors, Charles de Lint! Whoo-Hoo, Nicole!!!

All in all, this ia a CD I would highly recommend. For more info just click here.

CONGRATULATIONS, Nicole & Lothlorien!!!

kat

Wow! Thanks for your glowing review! The "strong and lusty" singing is probably Tamzin, not me! (I'm the "light and clear" one). "C.Lloyd" is my wonderful husband Chris.

To get the artist info, go here (I'll try the html thing again)

Cool, Nicole. I think I might have a friend order a cd for me (and pay her back of course), because I don't have a card...

Still enjoying this CD enormously. I was looking at their website and noticed that they have been getting some good press. They sang an original on The Good Morning Show on TV 1, on August 18th.

For those of you who live in New Zealand, and anywhere else near they will also be featured on 'Its Your Money' on TV2 at 7:30 on Thursday 31 August, singing 'Siuil A Ruin'.

That song is on this CD and they do a smashingly brilliant job of it...just gorgeous.

thanks,

kat

It is good stuff they do...and I mentioned in another thread (one about me, actually. That SSP, you know) that their CD was so popular on mp3.com that they had all the top five songs in the folk/celtic charts for several weeks running.

The trouble with mp3.com, from the listeners or folkie performers point of view, is that so much of the folk repertoire is actually copyrighted, and you can't post "cover" songs. So it's a mix of mostly well-worn standards (honestly, how many more renditions of "She Moved Through the Fair" does the world need?) which do very well, and original stuff which sounds like other well-known artists--those are the two categories that get lots of mp3.com hits--while really original stuff is harder to find. (It's there but, unsurprisingly I guess, is not in the top 40.) I'm hoping that were I to hear Lothlorien in concert, the Loreena McKennit influence would not be quite so evident. (Just as my own mp3.com site is not completely representative of what I actually perform--there's a huge chunk of my own repertoire that I can't post there--songs I picked up somewhere...)
The Ghostwood jig is quite original though and it was #1 for a few weeks, so this generalization is not always accurate.

Nicole has been very kind to me in regards to my mp3's so I hope she doesn't take this the wrong way. In fact I'd like to hear from you Nicole on the subject of how you promoted Lothlorien's mp3 site. Obviously, start with really good music, then what works?

For me it is lovely to see a group named after a place in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings".

Is that the best you can do, CH? Have you forgotten the Mudcat mantra, "tis better to refresh, than start a duplicate."

There may be a lot of newcomers who've never heard of this CD, plus there's nothing wrong with letting folks know this CD has stood the test of time, imo.
