Subject: DID YOU KNOW ... ?
From: bbelle
Date: 29 Jul 00 - 01:51 AM

Many times in my life someone has said to me ... "Jenny, did you know ...?" and whatever it was they told me, was always a bit of information or trivia that I'm convinced I needed to know. The "did you know's" have been about everything imaginable, e.g., life, music, the universe, the mundane, and the list goes on.

The "did you know's" have gotten less and I'm afraid I'm missing out on important information, so, I will start off ...

Did you know? ... that Rick Fielding coined the phrase "Blue Clicky Thing" because he was fairly new to computers and they were popping up in posts and he didn't know what to call it. That was over two years ago and it is now the most-favored-term for the blue clicky thing.

Rick also coined the term "flunderblunking" - which is STILL one of my favorite words.

Well ... it could end up silly (which wouldn't be a bad thing) ... or we could actually learn a thing or two about each other (which wouldn't be a bad thing either).

Ok ...

Did you know .... that the face on the tail of an Alaska Airlines plane is not a picture of Don Ho when he had an afro in the 70's ... it is the picture of an Eskimo.

Did you know...that after Peter T. and Tony Burns showed me HOW to do a "blue clicky" (yes I admit it was my phrase..just as Sandy lived to regret suggesting "BS" as a designation) it only took me two weeks to FORGET how to do it again.

Flunderblunker Fielding

However I didn't coin the words "furannablaster" or "freep" to describe huge and tiny farts.

Rick, some of the "gentlemen" I work with have developed a whole vocabulary to describe various forms of flatulence. However, neither "furannablaster" or "freep" are in it. Perhaps those are regional variations? ;)

Did you know that "Don't Fence Me In" was really written by a man in Roundup, Montana, and sold to a song buyer working for Cole Porter (for $20). I called into Larry King's radio show once to mention this, and after he and Arlo Guthrie joked about my name, he bacame irate that I would even suggest such a thing. Well, my family knew the man who wrote it. (Do you think Cole Porter would even know what a cayuse was until someone told him?) Anyway, believe me or not, I swear it's true. My actual question was going to be whether Woody Guthrie had ever had to sell songs that are now publshed with someone else's name on them, but I got cut off before I could ask that question.

Did you know that when you pack a car trunk, box or moving truck if you pack the biggest things first its easier to pack everything? Are you listening Allan C.? If you pack the heavy things in small boxes and the light things in big boxes you should get boxes you can lift by yourself.

Did you know that the first country to give the vote to women was New Zealand.

Thomas Hardy the novelist was so mean that if he was going out of a room for longer than 30 mins, he put the fire out to save coal. He also designed his own house with no inside toilets.

Richard the Third did not kill the princes in the tower even though history books still report that he did. It was Henry Tudor, and the truth was made public almost as soon as Elizabeth I was dead....

Did you know that..........
Albert Einstein was 4 years old before he could speak.

Beethoven's music teacher once said of him, "As a composer, he is hopeless,"

When Thomas Edison was a youngster, his teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. He was counselled to go into a field where he might succeed by virtue of his pleasant personality.

F.W. Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21, but his employer would not permit him to wait on customers because he "didn't have enough sense to close a sale."
Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Bob Cousy suffered the same fate.

A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas."

Winston Churchill failed Grade 6 and had to repeat it because he did not complete the tests that were required for promotion.

Babe Ruth struck out a record 1,300 times.

Yet somewhere along the road of life, we end up meeting someone who sees greatness in us, expects it from us and lets us know it. It is the golden key to success.

To get rid of the pigeons in one of the larger London stations, the local vet spiked pigeon food with contraceptives, to stop them breeding.

And a young pigeon is called a squab. The noise they all make as the biggest tries to outdo the others for food is where we get the word squabble from....

Actually it IS related to the human version, and doing a titre isn't conclusive, all Chlamydias react the same.

Most birds are inapparent carriers, pigeons get conjunctivitis...go figure...and feral pigeons have carrier rates of 50-95%. They poop out the organism, and it dries, aerosolizes when they flap their wings around guano, and re-infect thru respiratory tracts.

Humans can get infections ranging from flu-like symptoms to myocarditis, delirium, arthritis, and sudden death.

Message for today: Dealing with poo? Wear a mask.

Also, for further consideration in the Didja Know...

'Les Langage des Fleurs' by Charlotte de La tour in 1818 led to the resurgence of floriography in the Victorian age? Victorian lovers would send each other posies of flowers with distinct messages being tied to each type of flower.

Yep, we're talking about the same stuff that grows in your lawn. It is easily identified because of the parallel veins. Often both the narrow-leaf and the broad-leaf varieties can be found in the same spot.

Try some of the young leaves in a salad. Soak them in salted water for a few minutes and then very briefly place them in boiling water to make them tender.

Did you know that until recently when traveling west from the small town of Sultan,WA the sign on the highway said it was 7 miles to the next city Monroe. Oddly though when heading east to Sultan from Monroe the sign on the highway says you will have to travel only 6 miles. I'm not certain how many years the signs stood unquestioned at least 10 years by my estimation. Recently though someone decided to cover up the 7 with a 6 on the Sultan sign, though a bit of the seven can still be seen peeking out from under the 6. Yep another government coverup exposed. What I want to know is how much money were we the tax payers charged for the construction and upkeep of the phantom mile of roadway and how many other phantom miles exist scattered throughout the country unquestioned? And while we're at it, whose pockets are being lined with our tax dollars for these miles of roadway that don't exist except on paper? It may have taken more than ten years to shine the light of truth on this little plot of "hide the mile" but now the word is out.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Will I be Arrested if I End a Sentence with a Preposition?

A Southerner stopped a stranger on the Harvard campus and asked, "Could you please tell me where the library is at?" The stranger responded, "Educated people never end their sentences with a preposition." The overly polite Southerner then apologetically repeated himself: "Could you please tell me where the library is at, you jerk?"

While editing the proof of one of his books, Winston Churchill spotted a sentence that had been clumsily rewritten by the editor to eliminate a preposition at the end. The elder statesman mocked the intention with a comment in the margin: "This is the sort of English up with which I will not put."

These two anecdotes reflect an intolerance on both sides of the Atlantic for the rule prohibiting sentence-final prepositions. So where did the rule come from, anyway?

Before the science of language, linguistics, schools and universities taught what is known as 'prescriptive grammar'. Prescriptive grammar is not grammar (the rules of spoken language) at all but a list of "do's and don'ts" prescribing the way those in or striving for the upper class should talk. Because all upper-class private schools of the time emphasized, if not required Latin, 'good' grammar was presumed to be grammar that emulated Latin grammar.

The problem is, English is not Latin, an insight lost on prescriptivists. Latin has cases and every Latin preposition is associated with a case. For example, the word for "wine" in Latin is vinum. However, the prepositional phrase corresponding to "in wine" is in vino (as in 'in vino veritas'; 'wine brings out the truth') ending on the Ablative case marker, -o, because in was associated with the Ablative case. So the suffix of vin-o identifies the noun vin-um as the object of the preposition in and not the object of any other preposition in the sentence; in short, they go together.

Because sentences usually contain several prepositional phrases like this (e.g., "A relative of the fruitfly was doing something like the backstroke in the wine on the table in the library."), it is important to keep up with which noun goes with which preposition. The easiest way to do that is by a rule that prepositions are never separated from their object noun (or noun phrase if the noun is modified by adjectives). Latin has that rule.

Believing that Latin grammar represents grammatical perfection and unintimidated by the onerous task of molding English in the image of Latin, prescriptive grammarians proscribed the use of prepositions anywhere other than immediately before their object noun. For example, one should not say "the prescriptivist John clashed with," but rather "the prescriptivist with whom John clashed", not "the rule John laughed at," but "the rule at which John laughed".

The fact of the matter is, however, English simply does not have case endings on nouns that are objects of prepositions, so the reason for keeping prepositions and their object nouns together is wholly irrelevant to English. You may keep them together or not. You'll never spend a night in jail either way. However, because of the upper-class bias in the rule's history, its use now makes you sound pretentious: "the chap in whom I invested my trust". (Is that you? It isn't me; nor was it Winston Churchill.)

This example teaches us two important lessons about language. First, each and every language has its own set of grammatical rules and everyone who speaks that language knows what they are in his or her region. (They do vary slightly from region to region--big deal.) That is what speech is: the use of grammatical rules to express oneself. Second, prescriptive grammar is based on misconceptions about language and causes far more mischief than good.

Better to stick with the linguists.

The Phantom Linguist strikes again!

As Michael Caine might have said (well, he might...)not axolotl people know that. ?Spearchucker? I'm sure native Australians used them, did the Aztecs, too? If Hansell of Arabia says so it must be true.

You quoted Churchill thusly: "This is the sort of English up with which I will not put."

To my understanding it's "This is the sort of errant pedantry up with which I will not put."

Too right, Sins, all ships are proud. Not only that, the Monitor was the first U.S. ironclad, becoming the prototype for the Monitorclass ironclads to be built soon after. And no one "lost" the battle. It was a stalemate. That's what happens when you have 2 ships with 6 inches of iron plating bouncing cannonballs off each other. And the reason it sank was not crew error either. It was being towed off the coast of North Carolina when during a fierce storm (normal in NC) caused it the break loose, whereupon it became another part of the Graveyard of the Atlantic, off Cape Hatteras. And Ken Doll, I'm REALLY sure that none of the boats you captained ever won any battles either, but they were still proud.

A while ago, someone stated that don't fence me in was actually written by someone from montana, which is partially true. The title and several of the western phrases in the refrain were from a book of poems by Montana traffic engineer Robert H. Fletcher, the verses and the music were pure Porter though. It was due to an oversight that on the part of the publishing company that Fletcher god no credit. Fletcher did sue though. Gimbo

Did you know, that the flea can jump over one hundred times as high as it's own body height?
Imagine that a hundred times it's own height! This means, that if giraffes could leap, proportionally, pound for pound, as high as fleas, they'd avoid a lot of trouble!

And of course the whale is not really a fish, it's an insect; and it lives entirely on bananas!
I think facts are really interesting, don't you?
Well, I told you I was crazy, didn't I?
