I'm looking for the lyrics to a song possibly recorded by Mance Lipscomb. It's called Death Come Creeping. The words I know so far are:

What you gonna do, What you gonna do, When Death come creeping through What you gonna do, What you gonna do, When Death come creeping through

You gonna run, you gonna run Your gonna find your hiding place.

Thanks,

Randy

In my part of the country I grew up hearing a bluesy sort of traditional spiritual which most folks called "Death Came Creepin' in My Room." I'll see what I can find.

Randy:

These lines are in a Sam Cook (before he became Sam Cooke) gospel song with the Soul Stirrers. The song is I'm so glad (Trouble Don't Last Always). I don't know the Mance Lipscomb song The Cook tune is on an anthology that is widely available. The line goes: Soon one morning death comes creeping in my room/what shall I do/I got my religion/ etc.

The song Randy mentioned is most likely the one to which I was referring. It is a well-established African-American traditional gospel song, quite frequently performed by quartets.

Subject: Lyr Add: DEATH COME CREEPING (from S Grossman)
From: Paul Williams
Date: 20 Jul 98 - 12:30 AM

I heard the first two verses on a Steffan Grossman video "Fingerpicking Guitar Techniques", in which Steffan plays, sings, and teaches Death Come Creeping. The tune is played using drop "D" tuning. Verses 3 - 6 I gleaned off off the net somewhere, I don't remember where. If anyone can shed some light on the origins of this song I would be greatful since it really is a nice tune.

DEATH COME CREEPING

1. Now tell me what you're going to do when death comes creeping in your room.
Now tell me what you're going to do when death comes creeping in your room.
Now tell me what you're going to do when death comes creeping in your room.
Oh my lord, oh my lord, what shall I do, what shall I do.

2. You're going to run, you're going to run, you're going to seek your hiding place.
You're going to run, you're going to run, you're going to seek your hiding place
You're going to run, you're going to run, you're going to seek your hiding place
Oh my lord, oh my lord, what shall I do, what shall I do.

3. Soon one morning, death came creeping in my room
Soon one morning, death came creeping in my room
Soon one morning, death came creeping in my room
Oh my lord, oh my lord, what shall I do, what shall I do.

4. Death's done come and took my Mother away
Death's done come and took my Mother away
Death's done come and took my Mother away
Oh my lord, oh my lord, what shall I do, what shall I do.

5. Death's done come and took my Father away
Death's done come and took my Father away
Death's done come and took my Father away
Oh my lord, oh my lord, what shall I do, what shall I do.

6. Ride on, Death, 'cause you can't do me no harm
Ride on, Death, 'cause you can't do me no harm
Ride on, Death, 'cause you can't do me no harm
Oh my lord, oh my lord, what shall I do, what shall I do.

My mother, Hally Wood, recorded an a capella version of this song in the early 1950s on her Elektra album, "O, Lovely Appearance of Death". I have the album in my computer, but I don't know how to send it out of the program it's in. Tw

According to the Online 78-rpm Discography Project, The Golden Eagle Gospel Singers recorded WHEN DEATH COMES CREEPING IN YOUR ROOM in 1937, issued as Decca 7313, b/w DO LORD REMEMBER ME.

i,m trying to find the lyrics, always be grateful by the soul stirrers.

Hi, Lillie - please see this thread, where I posted your request. I don't know if we'll be able to come up with a transcription. This song is very hard to understand.

Soon one morning
Death comes a-creeping in the room
Soon one morning
Death comes a-creeping in the room
Soon one morning
Death comes a-creeping in the room
Oh my Lord, oh my Lord what shall I do

You may call your father
Your father will be no use
Call your father
Your father will be no use
Call your father
Your father will be no use
Oh my Lord, oh my Lord what shall I do

You had better hush, hush, hush
Somebody's calling by name
Hush

Soon One Mornin' Death Come Creepin'
Words & Music:
Traditional American

This song was collected from Vera Hall & Dock Reed, AL, 1917 and published in Our Singing Country by Alan Lomax. It is posted on the wonderful Mudcat Cafe Digital Trad page and the Traditionalmusic.co.uk page. The most famous rendition of it in recent years is the stark, haunting slide version by Mississippi Fred McDowell. It is a simple, one-chord song and is best played as a no3 chord (A5 or E5) so it is neither major nor minor.

Soon one mornin' death come creepin' in my room.
Soon one mornin' death come creepin' in my room.
Soon one mornin' death come creepin' in my room.
O my Lord, O my Lord, what shall l do to be saved?

Death done been here, tuck my mother an' gone.
Death done been here, tuck my mother an' gone.
Death done been here, tuck my mother an' gone.
O my Lord, O my Lord, what shall l do to be saved?

Death done been here, left me a motherless child.
Death done been here, left me a motherless child.
Death done been here, left me a motherless child.
O my Lord, O my Lord, what shall l do to be saved?

Don't move my pillow until my Jesus comes.
Don't move my pillow until my Jesus comes.
Don't move my pillow until my Jesus comes.
O my Lord, O my Lord, what shall l do to be saved?

When Jesus comes, you can turn my bed around.
When Jesus comes, you can turn my bed around.
When Jesus comes, you can turn my bed around.
O my Lord, O my Lord, what shall l do to be saved?

I'm so glad I got my religion in time.
I'm so glad I got my religion in time.
I'm so glad I got my religion in time.
O my Lord, O my Lord, what shall l do to be saved?

Bob Brozman's version

I'm crying death comes creepin lord across the land
I mean deatch come creepin lord across the land
sometimes i wonder mama what will be my end
oh lord, man I really wonder what will be my end
I really wonder sometimes what will be my end
One day I will be dead and gone
who will take care of my family and all my friends

hhhhhmmmmmmmmm, oh lordy lord
oooooooohhhhhhh, mama oh lordy lord

one day I will be dead and gone who gonna take care of my family and all my friends

You know there is hard times in america
people drifting door to door
I mean there is such hard times in my own country
people are drifting door to door
I feel worried for the people there
tell me where in the world can a working family go

I woke up this morning death worried on my mind
I woke up this morning like so many mornings people death worried on my mind
alwayts a mean old world,
Im not affraid to tell you young people that I'm scared of dyin,.
I aint affraid to tell old people I aint learned enough about livin

but I get up every morning and all I can do is try to be kind
always a mean old world sometimes
I wake and try to be kind.
