Subject: Chad Mitchell Trio!!!
From: Thomas the Rhymer

I just dragged home an oldie from the records lined up at Goodwill, like so may testiments to our trendy libido driven cultural/musical catastrophies,... when I took a chance on "The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End". Put it on first thing this morning, and WOW!, these guys sound so great, do moving meaningful songs, relate with the audience well (its live) and come off sounding downright eternal.

Where are they now? where have they been since March 19 1962?

Hi Thomas!

Remember the Mitchell Trio well...and after Chad left, John Denver took his place! Had several of their albums, until Hurricane Andrew pretty much wiped out my entire vinyl collection. They've been NOT recording since about 1969. The end of the folk era did them in. And instead of changing their style, they just decided to get out of show biz. Kind of curious myself, to know what they've all done since. They were terrific! If you can find any of their other albums grad them! Would love to know too, if they were ever put on CD. Reflecting was another good album of theirs.

As usual, check out Ebay. Their LPs are always for sale there and some CDs as well. I saw Chad Mitchell perform in the 60s. Wonderful songs, wonderful performers. Have to look through my old records. If they're not here, my brother has them.
Thomas - would you list some of the songs from your record?I am drawing a frustrating blank.

Trivia on that album. The guitarist on the cover in the background and who also played banjo on the record was Roger (Jim) McGuinn, who later played in the Byrds.(folk-rock superstars.)

Below is a discography of CMT. Those labelled JD have John Denver, Joe Frazier & Mike Kobluk. Unlabeled have Chad MItchell, Frazier & Kobluk. "Arrived" and "CMT & Gatemen" albums are Mitchell, Kobluk & Mike Pugh. "Alive" is Denver, Kobluk & David Boise. The short-lived trio of Denver, Boise & Michael Johnson did not release any recordings. PBS reunuions are mostly Mitchell-Frazier-Kobluk but a couple songs with Denver. The MItchell, Kobluk, Pugh trio also had 3 or 4 songs from the Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall concert

"Arrives!" LP (Colpix CP411) - This album had at least three different covers A)The trio sitting on the roof at the entrance to the Blue Angel B) some drawings of instruments; C)a sketch of Chad Mitchell and a guitar and banjo. Only the first cover is labeled "Arrives!", the other two just say "The Chad Mitchell Trio". Vic Messer played guitar and Eric Darling, banjo.

"The Chad Mitchell Trio and The Gatemen In Concert - Everybody's Listening" LP (Colpix SCP 463) This album was actually released sometime after the following 3 or 4 albums had established the trio's popularity. Colpix went back to their archives and pulled up some tracks to try to cash in on the popularity. 3 of the 6 songs by the CMT on this album are also on "Arrives!". The release also triggered legal action by the trio who maintained that the songs no longer reflected the type of music they were doing.

"Mighty Day On Campus" LP (Kapp KL 1262) Roger (Jim) McGuinn plays guitar and banjo and is pictured with the trio

"At The Bitter End" LP (Kapp KS 3281) McGuinn again on guitar and banjo, Fred Hellerman on guitar and Bill Lee on bass

"In Action" LP (Kapp KS 3313) I think this album was actually the first recording of Dylan's "Blowin In The Wind". When Peter Paul & Mary's version of that song became popular the album title was changed to "Blowin' In The Wind" but the picture on the cover remained the same. guitars - Paul Prestopino, Jacob Ander, Bruce Langhorne; bass Norman Keenan. The was the beginning of a very long relationship between the trio and Prestopino and Anders.

"Arrives" and all 3 of the Kapp albums have been reissued on CD

"The Best Of Chad Mitchell Trio" LP (Kapp KS 3334) This LP contains selections from the three Kapp albums

"Singin' OUr Mind" LP (Mercury SR 60838) with Prestopino and Ander

"Reflecting" LP (Mercury SR 60891) with Prestopino and Ander

The Slightly Irreverent" LP (Mercury SR 20944)With this LP "Chad" was dropped from the group name. It became just "The Mitchell Trio" even though Chad was still with them. with Ander & Prestopino

"Typical American Boys" LP (Mercury SR 60992) with Prestopino and Ander.

"That's The Way It's Gonna Be " (JD) LP Mercury SR 61049. John Dever replaces Chad Mitchell. guitars = Ander, Prestopino & Denver, the first time a trio member also played and instrument

"Violets Of Dawn " (JD) LP (Mercury SR 60167) John Denver's song writing debut with "For Bobbi". This is the only CMT album to ever receive a Grammy nomination. It didn't win.

"Alive" (JD) LP (Reprise 6258)Joe Frazier had left the group to go to seminary and was replaced by David Boise. guitars - Prestopino, Denver & Bob Hefferan. This album contains my personal favorite version of the Lennon/McCartney song "She Loves You", also Denver does his first take on "Leavin On Jet Plane". Two years later Peter Paul & Mary made it big with this Denver song.

"Beginnings - John Denver & Mitchell Trio" LP (Mercury SRM 1-704) This was relased in 1974 long after the trio broke up. It was intended to grab some of the John Denver popularity. Mercury records had chosen not to sign Denver as a soloist. RCA did and made out OK in that deal. Two of the tracks were not on previous Mercury albums although a different take of one of the "She Loves You" was on the Reprise album.

In 1987, 20 years after they broke up the CMT got together for a series of reunion concerts. ONe of them in Charlotte NC was video-taped for a PBS tleevision special that ran several times. It was mostly MItchell, Kobluk & Frazier (with Ander & Prestopino) but John Denver showed up for a couple songs at the end. Copies of the video can sometimes be found (I have one that was taped off the broadcast). In the middle 90's, Folk Era Records obtained access to the audio tapes of that concert and has relased the entire concert on two CDs :
"Mighty Day/Chad Mitchell Trio Reunion" (Part 1 of PBS special)
"Chad Mitchell Trio Reunion...Part 2" (Folk Era FE 1438CD)

"The Very Best of The Chad MItchell Trio" CD (Vanguard 79494-2) This collection released in 1996 has 15 tracks from both the Kapp and Mercury recordings.

"Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio - The Mercury Years" CD (Mercury 314 534 400-2) Issued in 1998 this CD contains 25 tracks from the Mercury CMT library that overlaps both Chad Mitchell's and John Denver's stint. It includes two (in my opinion rather mediocre)tracks that were released only as a Mercury single.

"An Evening with the Chad Mitchell Trio & Friends-Live at the Birchmere" CD (Medium Rare REcords MR002) This concert was recorded in 1995 and the CD issued in 1996. It has 9 songs by the CMT, one song by Carolyn Hester, 3 songs by the Limeliters (this was Lou Gottlieb's last recording) and one song with Chirstine Lavin, the CMT and the Limeliters.

Chad Mitchell recorded a couple of albums for Warner Bros. Records after leaving the Trio. The first, Chad Mitchell Himself, was quite good. The selection was very eclectic, perhaps kind of cabaret-ish, and included Brother Can You Spare a Dime, Marieke, Violets of Dawn, She Was Too Good to Me and others which don't readily come to this old mind. It puts one in mind of Will Holt, as to selection and flavor. BTW, I recently obtained the Reunion v.2 CD; I probably should have listened to Thomas Wolfe's admonition.----John

Thanks, rich r, for clearing something up for me. I had heard that Michael Johnson was once with some form of the Mitchell Trio, but I had never been able to find any recordings. So there were none!

By the way, I still like Michael Johnson and see him at least once a year when he passes through the area.

In addition to the CDs listed by rich r, 'At the Bitter End' and 'Blowin' in the Wind' have been reissued on CD - Folk Era 3281 and 3313 respectively. You can (or could) get them at CD Universe. I think I recall seeing somewhere that 'Mighty Day on the Campus' also made it to CD, but may have imagined it. There is also a Chad Mitchell solo album 'Virgo Moon' on CD.

John H, I agree with you about Chad's first solo album. I never much cared for his second one, "Love, A Feeling Of". I was particularly annoyed by a song about the definition of love from Webster's dictionary. I ditched that album over 30 years ago and I still can't forget. In the early 90's Chad issued a comeback CD of sorts called "Virgo Moon" that is very listenable. I think he had some visions of getting some radio play with "Outboud Plane" but unfortunately for him Suzy Boggus got her version out first. I don't really agree with your assessment of the Reunion concert, but then I checked my objectivity about the CMT nearly 40 years ago. I will conced that Volume 1 of the reunion is probably stronger than Volume 2. The simple explanation is that when the songs were selected for Vol 1 there were no plans for a Volume 2. Therefore Volume 2, by default was "the rest of the concert".

You can also find the original trio on the Harry Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall CD. They do a song called "I Do Adore Her" with Harry Belafonte that is truly gorgeous. I don't think I've ever heard better vocal harmony.

The final lineup of the Mitchell Trio, then known as Denver, Boise and Johnson, didn't release any albums but did have a single called "The '68 Nixon." I'd be interested to learn if anyone knows whatever happened to David Boise (I don't THINK he's the same guy who served as lead attorney for Gore's camp in the Florida election mess). Also, does anyone know what became of original Trio member Mike Pugh? If anyone's interested, Chad Mitchell is selling real estate in Spokane, Joe Frazier is an Episcopal priest in Torrance, CA, and Mike Kobluk recently retired from the City of Spokane where he'd served as Entertainment Facilities Director for many years. The last reunion concerts they did that I'm aware of were in 1996, and they were terrific as ever. Ray

Chad Mitchell had a lot to do with migrating strong social and political themes onto pop radio.

They gave voice to great songwriters, and prepared us to receive the works of those with "less than perfect voices".

PP&M did that for Dylan, CMT did it for scores of others.

One hell of an acheivement, I'd say. Their importance in getting exposure for stuff that ought to be heard has been greatly undervalued.

CM, whereever you are, I'm in your debt.

Bat Goddess, "Ain't No More Cane on this Brazos" can be found on the CMT's "Singin Our Mind" album - probably my favorite of the dozen albums they released over the years. It's usually available on Ebay for a very reasonable price; seems the bids don't go too high unless John Denver's in the lineup.

BobP, I agree that the CMT's achievements are under-recognized. They went out on a number of limbs in performing and recording material containing strong social statements ("The John Birch Society," "Alma Mater," "Twelve Days," "The Ides of Texas," "Barry's Boys," and even "Blowin in the Wind" - yes, they recorded it first! - to name a few). For their trouble, they were banned from some radio stations and wound up never having a "hit" single from which people might remember them. They were extremely talented singers whose harmonies and vocal arrangements couldn't be touched by the more "popular" folk trios. Yet, today they are best known as the group where John Denver got his start, when they're remembered at all. They deserve better.

Ray

THE MARVELOUS TOY
Words and Music by Tom Paxton
As recorded by Tom Paxton on "I'm the Man that Built the Bridges"

1. When I was just a wee little lad full of health and joy,
My father homeward came one night and gave to me a toy.
A wonder to behold, it was, with many colors bright,
the moment I laid eyes on it it became my heart's delight.

CHORUS: It went "zip" when it moved and "bop" when it stopped, "whirr" when it stood still.
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

2. The first time that I picked it up, I had a big surprise,
For right on its bottom were two big buttons that Looked like big green eyes.
I first pushed one and then the other, then I twisted its lid,
When I set it down again, this is what it did: CHORUS

3. It first marched left and then marched right, then marched under a chair.
And when I looked where it had gone, it wasn't even there.
I started to cry and my daddy laughed, for he knew that I would find,
When I turned around, my marvelous toy, chugging from behind. CHORUS

4. Well, the years have gone by too quickly, it seems; I have my own little boy.
And yesterday I gave to him my marvelous little toy.
His eyes nearly popped right out of his head; he gave a squeal of glee.
Neither one of us knows just what it is, but he loves it, just like me.

CHORUS: It still goes "zip" when it moves, "bop" when it stops, "whirr" when it stands still.
I never knew just what it was, and I guess I never will.

FOLK ERA RECORDS has a huge number of titles from all the groups, trios, quartets etc. of that time. Do a google search and they would make great stocking stuffers or gifts for old folkies lost in the folk scare of the '60s.

Bruce,

I had always heard that Tom Paxton had only daughters. Did he have a son?

I am a recent convert to The Chad Mitchell Trio. Under appreciated by many. Better in everyway than most other trios of the day. I can't believe I missed them first time around.

Right you are as usual, Don. From a site with his bio on it:

The CMT were second favorites for me. They sang well and extremely spirited and I enjoyed their songs.

I did see a great reunion of the original three sometime in the early 90s.

However, their lack of playing instruments as the Kingston Trio did was a negative.

Okay, so back on the "Marvelous Little Toy" theme, I was looking at a Sharper Image catalog last night, and...I believe Tom Paxton was prescient!

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned "No More Cane On The Brazos". Leadbelly recorded this at least once. My mother, Hally Wood, sang it (she learned it working with Leadbelly), but I don't think she ever recorded it. I have heard Alan Lomax sing it a few times, too.      Tw

I can't believe more people don't know Chad Mitchell and the Trio. Do all Border's Bookstores carry Chad Mitchell Trio? Can I get the CDs there? How about reunion and some of those DVDs? Just an update on Chad Mitchell Trio: they just got back from a trip to the Carribean with Traveling Troubadours Agency in January, 2007 and were book solid. Apparently a lesser known talent was with them by the name of Jack Williams. Also Barry Flast, a pianist for Paul Stookey and Jefferson Starship has done a series on Chad Mitchell and the Chad Mitchell Trio. All you have to do is go to: http://www. Barry Flast interviews Chad Mitchell.com on Yahoo to listen in. Fascinating interviews about the beginnings of the group, how they arrived at the name Chad Mitchell Trio, etc and why the group struggled with name of the trio and how they got aced by Peter, Paul and Mary out of the song "Blowin in the Wind".

Chad Mitchell relates to Barry Flast in an interview, that I noted could be heard on podcast in my note on April 12, 2007, that Bob Bollard did not let the Chad Mitchell Trio release "Blowin in the Wind" because it had the word "death" in it and according to Bollard no song had ever done well with the "D" word in it. Consequently, the Chad Mitchell Trio did not release the song until it was too late.   P.P.& M. released it and scored big! The Chad Mitchell Trio lost faith in Bollard, who had recorded the "Mighty Day on Campus" and "The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End" Albums which I understand went gold for the Trio.   Apparently that why the Trio was reticient about bucking Bob Bollard. The Chad Mitchell Trio fired Bollard shortly thereafter, left Kapp records and the tutelage of Harry Belefonte, and went to Mercury Records after that.

I remember when one person quit the CMT, and the person who quit was none other than ... Chad Mitchell!

I found the whole idea a bit perplexing, and wasn't sure what to make of this new guy, John Denver, who stepped in as the replacement, while Chad "Himself" was starting a solo career. I have a vague memory of seeing the group live right at the time of this change, probably at a festival or some kind of concert featuring multiple acts, and being surprised that they had a new member in the lead-singer spot.

This was around the time that, rightly or wrongly, I was tuning out of the "commercial" folk music group-vocal genre in favor of my newly developing interest in more hard-core, less-generally-accessible, folk forms, especially the older generation of bluesmen who were being "redicovered." So I did not follow the "new" CMT (without CM) very closely, but I did know who John Denver was when he launched his own career under his own name.

Incidentally, the estimable Mr. McGuinn, who was a backing musician on many folk and folk-oid recordings before founding the Byrds and finding stardom, was originally named "Jim" and only later became "Roger." I remember reading that the name change had something to do with McG's emerging interest in Eastern mysticism, and could never figure out what the name "Roger" had to do with Buddhism or any other East-Asian spiritual traditions. It's not like he changed his name to "Ram Dass" or anything exotic like that, even anything authentically Asian ~ can anyone explain?

Way I heard it was that his guru recommended he change his name from Jim to something that started with 'R.' McGuinn gave the guru a list of names, and the guru picked Roger.

Yes. This thread brought back some memories. Chad Mitchell was quite a force in those days. I bought his Guild F-212 via Roma Baran, a New York Record Producer. (Laurie Anderson, etc.) And, I had the opportunity to open for Roger "Jim" McGuinn at The Golem here in Montreal a number of years back. To this day, one of the finest acoustic performances I've ever seen. Hit after hit...

The Chad Mitchell Trio sang in Spokane after a forty year hiatus.
According to the review, they were outstanding!!! Go to their website and you can pull up the newspaper article and read it. I was impressed. There is also a half hour live radio show with Ron Allen that Kobluk and Mitchell did in October, shortly after the Spokane concert. Apparently "Traveling Troubadours" is going to do a tour with the Chad Mitchell Trio to Alaska in June with their buddy Tom Paxton who will be an opening act for them.

I first heard them via an old Harry Belafonte concert double album he did at Carnegie Hall, circa 1959 or so. What struck me was the purity of their harmonies and delivery. It reminded me of the tightness of a good brass choir. My old group used one of their numbers, "Ain't No More Cane On The Brazos," to great effect.

I hadn't Googled CMT for a year or more and was surprised to find that they now have a web site [http://www.chadmitchelltrio.com/] and are doing concerts again. It's too sad that I'm stuck in the middle of Arkansas and they are performing on the coasts.

My envy goes out to all who are able to attend one of their concerts. I live in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, a community of about 13,000+, primarily retirees, and we get groups like Kingston Trio and the Platters where you're lucky if one performer was in the group originally, and then there's CMT, still together!

It also looks like more places are carrying their CDs now. It would be nice if the increased exposure and willingness to tour might get them into my general area.

I just got a new 8GB MP3 player and went through about 5000 MP3s on my hard drive to pick and choose the best songs off albums to put on it, but when I got to CMT, *everything* went on. Not a lemon in the bunch. What a great group.

I may have mentioned this on some other thread - I love the CMT recording of Ain't No More Cane On The Brazos, but the way they phrase it (as opposed to the way, say, Bill Staines does it), you miss the rhyme between Brazos and molasses.

My husband and I were on the Traveling Troubadour cruise with the Chad Mitchell Trio and Jack Williams. Note also that Paul Prestopino and Jake Ander (see the "where are they now" thread) were the CMTs backup musicians, and that Paul also backs up Peter, Paul and Mary on many of their present-day gigs.

My old trio, in the early 1960's, used our version of "No More Cane On The Brazos" as a regular part of our repertoire. I admit that two my cohorts shamelessly "lifted" most of it directly from a CMT record, which one I can't recall.

To Bat Goddess: I hope you weren't married to one of us. If you were, it had to be Bob or Lee. I KNOW I don't have the record.

I consider myself well-versed on Chad Mitchell Trio-related matters and I have never heard of Igor.   I did check out the website and it says he played behind John Denver at one time (so did a lot of people) -- that's the closest "connection" I can imagine.   Igor isn't a name one would easily forget....

BTW, the Trio has come out with a terrifc 3-DVD set that features some of their many TV appearances during the Hootenanny era (disc 1), their 1908s PBS reunion with John Denver -- with a number of songs that didn't make the TV show or subsequent video (disc 2) and their Fall 2007 concerts in Spokane and Wisconsin (disc 3). The set is kinda pricey, but quite literally a dream come true for someone like me who was too young to see them live during their heyday and too far away to attend last year's shows. Has anyone else watched this set?   Check it out at www.chadmitchelltrio.com

Re: The 3-DVD set...

I've been considering getting it, but I already have the PBS show on VHS and I downloaded from YouTube a set of 3 songs they performed on the Bell Telephone show back in the '60s, so I didn't know if it could really be worth $80. (It was GREAT watching the YouTube video.)

It's too sad that concerts in the '60s weren't filmed/videoed the way they are now. How great would it be to see CMT performing at the Bitter End or the "Mighty Day On Campus" concert?

N. Ford, the PBS show didn't contain all the songs that show up on this new DVD (Whistling Gypsy, Hang on the Bell Nellie, The Unfortunate Man, Adios Mi Corazon, Nicaragua, Waves on the Sea, Tell Old Bill, Brother Can You Spare a Dime, and Ronnie's [Barry's] Boys all show up along with most of the stuff from the original VHS tape).   And, although the DVD featuring the Trio's Sixties performances does include the Bell Telephone Hour performance you mentioned from YouTube, it has a whole lot of other stuff, some of which I actually hadn't seen before (and I've been collecting video of the CMT from Ebay for years).   $80 is a lot to spend, but I don't regret the purchase at all (of course, the credit card bill hasn't yet arrived....)

Hi, Cathy - the Wikipedia article is pretty good on that information. You may enjoy looking at the group's Website, http://chadmitchelltrio.com/, although it doesn't have any exact information about personnel changes. This Michael Johnson Website (click) may be of interest to you.

This page (click) has a recording of "The '68 Nixon" by Denver, Boise and Johnson - you NEED to hear this. Apparently, it's the only studio recording by Denver, Boise and Johnson (note this), but this YouTube video shows the group in action on another song.

If the Wikipedia article doesn't do the trick for you, contact me by e-mail and I have some resources I can check.

Here's a late response to raredance (10 years after his original post). I loved Chad Mitchell's 2nd lp--I thought it was one of the most creative and original recordings by a former "folksinger".   Some great experimenting with jazz (Stuart Scharf and Bob Dorough were involved in the record), and a great range of material. Loved it all!

Also, inbetween that LP and the Virgo Moon CD, he recorded an LP on Bell records (which, to my way of thinking, didn't work--he wasn't in great voice, and he ended up watering down some great songs--including the fabulous "Goodbye and Hello" by Tim Buckley.

It's too bad that Virgo Moon didn't do better. It's a fine CD==and I was always hoping he would put out some more solo works. I'm wondering if there might be anything out there on independent labels?

Absolutely, Joe. This is no doubt his best stuff. I have both of them on vinyl, and may buy the cd if I can find it cheap. Tracks 11 to 20 are from the LP I'm talking about on my previous post--and the one that a couple people on here weren't all that enthusiastic about.
