Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: Burke Date: 04 Aug 00 - 05:41 PM Many e-mail lists now provide interactive archives so an alternative is providing links to interesting discussions. The ethonomusicology groups is at: http://listserv.indiana.edu/archives/sem-l.html And a related musical delimma is there as well under tribal music I'd rather see this than wholesale forwarding. If the group is interesing enough you should join. |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: celticblues5 Date: 04 Aug 00 - 11:58 AM the net = anonymous nudists, then? ;-) mmmmm, yeah, steep them herbs! mom wants a cuppa. I would think it would depend on the list & the personal-ness of the discussion. When I took a genetic biotechnology class & had to do a paper on the ethics of genetic testing, I briefly joined a discussion list for victims of Huntington's disease (making the other participants aware of my status as a researcher & not a patient/family of a patient) - I used their comments in the paper, but of course I wouldn't have used them in public or identified them without their permission. I haven't seen anything yet on the ethnomusicology list that would remotely qualify as too personal to repeat. "I'm doing a study on gamelin music" hardly qualifies! |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: paddymac Date: 03 Aug 00 - 05:23 PM Joe - I for one appreciate and applaud your fine sense of ethics and courtesy. BUT, we should all be ever aware that anything that enters cyberspace can pop-up most anywhere, with or without the originator's knowledge or consent. Sort of a frightening reality, I know. Reminds me of the old adage about not doing or saying anything you wouldn't want your mother to find out about. |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Aug 00 - 03:18 PM No, I wouldn't think stuff on lists could be copyrighted. I'm talking about manners and ethics here, which is actually much more important than legality. We'd have a much happier world if people were guided by ethics and manners instead of by law. If I post a message on the "herbal cooking for nudists" list, do I have a right to be offended if my message appears at Mudcat? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: celticblues5 Date: 03 Aug 00 - 12:10 PM tee hee! there are stories of Native American groups making up histories & legends just to pull the tallywhacker of the visiting anthropologist |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: GUEST,Brad Sondahl Date: 03 Aug 00 - 07:22 AM Reminds me of my favorite made up blues lyrics, I ain't no ethnomusicologist, I ain't no ethnomusicologist son, But I can play the blues until the ethnomusicologist comes... |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: celticblues5 Date: 02 Aug 00 - 06:27 PM I don't know about the ethical stuff - I wouldn't think it could be copyrighted - just a discussion list, but what do I know? I would be happy to post what sounds interesting. Not long ago they were doing a riff on the little bits of doggerel people have made up to go to classical themes (eg - "kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit, kill the WA-bit!") - reminded me of the parodies posted here! (Who sez academics have no sense of humor?) If something comes up, I'll post it under an ethnomusicology heading. |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Aug 00 - 04:13 PM Some of these lists sound intriguing to me, but I just don't have time to monitor them. Is it postible for you who watch those lists to copy and post interesting stuff for us, or does that raise an ethical question? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: ethnomusicology list From: Shanti Date: 02 Aug 00 - 01:29 PM Thank you Celticblues5...I'll head right over there! I like the academic side of it as much as the performance, collecting side.

Subject: ethnomusicology list From: celticblues5 Date: 02 Aug 00 - 11:51 AM Hey, all - I've been on an ethnomusicology list for some time now, and it occurred to me that some of the catters might like to receive it also. A fair portion is taken up by anthropology job listings, but there is also a good deal of discussion on authentic ethnic music from around the world. The address is - SEM-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU Most of the members ARE ethnomusicologists, so it does get a little technical at times (and perhaps too academic), but I usually find a posting of interest at least once a week. No discussions of such things as Mrs. Slocom's pussy, though! ;-)
