Pardon this bit of trivia--Lara's Theme, in the movie, was not played on Balalaikas, it was actually played on tamburitzas, by the Crlenica Brothers, who did a lot of movie soundtrack work--

Right... Liz the Squeak in particular...

Some 30 years ago I had the pleasure of sitting in a Lakeland farm kitchen , some 3 feet from Bill Clifton and mandolin legend Red Rector, recording their version of said tune, very, very live!! I was knocked out by the quality of it...played with so much feeling. It still chokes me , even today!! If you've ever heard of Red Rector, I sincerely hope he is not on your list of "smarmy gits with mandolins"!! Anyways, anybody good enough to play it on mando earns the right to be smarmy, in my book!!

                  Regards to all.... Spot    :-)

i agree with Kendall. It has a haunting quality and the words have a pop-song sensibility that will not coincide with a "folk-snob" attitude.

It's lovely when played on a balalaika and it was used successfully by Maurice Jarre who did a good job on the musical score for Zhivago.

I think it's important to listen to different music with new ears and not fall into the trap of pooh-poohing it because it isn't what the so-called "folk officianados" like.

The tune has a folk-like quality reminiscent of Russian Gypsy melodies which tend toward the "sentimental" but retain a plaintive and wistful air.

I think that the folk-snob thing is detrimental to the importance of traditional folk music.

Yeah, "Those were the Days" was a Russian Gypsy tune and song -- I don't think Paul gave credit on the version he produced, tho'

Hey, I thought "Those Were the Days" was a legitimate Russian folk song. It isn't?

As for Julie Christie, few more beautiful women have ever graced the screen. I don't remember much from the movie, but I sure remember her.

Kendall, I always follow you............At a distance of course.

If you're referring to the Audrey Hepburn reference, that's a running joke between Peter and I.......My apologies to all for the "inside joke" stuff.

O.K. CP, I'll see your drenched cat, and raise you one Roman Holiday (she got drenched in that one too, I recall). Now we're talking. Forget the Russian revolution. Kendall can have it.

yours, Peter T.

Spaw, sometimes I just dont follow you, but, that may be a good thing! thanks joe. I once sang "Those were the days" at a folk festival, and, got away with it.(Guess they were tired of "Puff the magic dragon)

ALRIGHT you clowns!!! back off..that was the best movie I ever saw, its a beautiful song, and it sure as hell isnt overdone by any folksinger I know with all those uptown chords! Besides, it would have to go some to beat Amazing Grace for being overdone. Put 'em up put 'em up!!

Well I dunno PT.........I could ask for a rainstorm in an alley, a drenched cat, and an equally drenched Audrey Hepburn in a taxi heading back to my place...........but that'd just be me of course.

Dreadful movie, but an abandoned house, a big snowstorm and Julie Christie. I mean, what more can you ask of life? Of course the incessant shameless replaying of that theme would tend to grate after awhile, but there are crushed rose petals on every walk of life.
yours, Peter T.

OK, so another brain cell hit the dust.....

I always liked it, it was never overdone here, but it IS a very arboreal rodenty tune isn't it.....

On the other hand Liz, the real problem with this one is that it was SO overplayed, that now the first reaction people may have to it is just like yours....and mine.

Oh, thanks!! Just got rid of one squirrely tune, now THIS is going to go round like a bloody hamster!

Keep singing it often enough, and it will become folk - a beautiful song, if you avoid balalaika impressions or smarmy gits with mandolins....

Subject: Lyr Add: SOMEWHERE MY LOVE (LARA'S THEME)
From: Joe Offer
Date: 03 Aug 00 - 03:40 PM

Ah, nice song. Not folk, but a nice song.
-Joe Offer-
SOMEWHERE MY LOVE (LARA'S THEME)

Artist: Andy Williams
Words by Paul Francis Webster and Music by Maurice Jarre
from the 1965 film epic "Doctor Zhivago" starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie
Jarre won an Oscar his soundtrack
A # 9 hit for Ray Conniff in 1966

Somewhere my love there will be songs to sing
Although the snow covers the hope of Spring
Somewhere a hill blossoms in green and gold
And there are dreams, all than your heart can hold
Someday we'll meet again, my love
Someday whenever the Spring breaks through

You'll turn to me out of the long-ago
Warm as the wind, soft as the kiss of snow
Lara, my own, think of me now and then
Godspeed, my love, till you are mine again

[brief instrumental interlude]
Warm as the wind, soft as the kiss of snow
[brief instrumental interlude]
Godspeed, my love, till you are mine again

Maybe the dog ate Lara's homework and her theme wasn't turned in Mr. President.

Laras theme from Dr. Zhivago is not in the DT. Anyone know where I can find it?
