Subject: Mudcat Radio and Real Player Upgrade

I know many Mudcatters have downloaded the latest Real Player update in order to listen to Mudcat Radio. I have done this as well. I have also had a series of unexplained crashes and eventually a blown file or two. Since I have several people using my PC at home, I never thought the crashes and the upgrade were related.

In the last few days I have repaired, and reloaded my system and resolved the problems. In the process I had eliminated the Real Player download, so one of the last things I did was download it again, and install it. My system problem returned! (It starts when Real Player is loaded but not used for several minutes ... my Windows 98 apps just lock up. I can do "ctl/alt/dlt" and kill the Real Player app, which is "Not Responding" - but the system remains trying to cope with an error the entire time, and when I shut down I receive another error). I still would think that it was just my own PC, and in fact did think that until I downloaded Real Player to my NT machine at at work today - and got the exact same lock up on it. Again, Real Player is loaded, I haven't used it for a few minutes, and then what ever other app I am running locks up completely, I can do nothing but cntl/alt/dlt, look at the task menu, see that Real Player is "Not Responding" and I have to kill it from that menu. If I do, I can go back and work the other apps, but when I shut down the machine, I see that some other error condition has remained the entire time.

Anyone else seeing this type of prob with Real Player??

Any thoughts?

Hi Jed. I'm not sure if I have the latest update, but I've had problems since I updated about two weeks ago. For some reason when I listen to a midi file from my ISP, it starts playing immediately, then a second signal starts when the page finishes loading. I don't have this problem with other places on the net. I haven't listened to Mudcat radio for a couple of weeks (OK, chastise me), so I'm not sure if I can still hear it. I think my RealPlayer version is G2. Any thoughts?

Mary

Jed, I have not experienced any Problems with Real Player 8 basic (I use Windows 98). I would suggesst that this is one for Real themselves to answer but could it be down to a conflict between Real Player and some other software that you run on both of your computers? I would GUESS that another audio program would be a likely suspect. I know that Alison for one experienced crashses when trying to use Hearme when the previous version of Real Player was loaded.

Mary, you need Real Player 8 to hear the latest MCR. It sounds as if you need to upgrade. You can check your version using Help/ About in Real.

I am a little puzzled at to why you are using Real Player to play MIDI. From memory, they do supply some form of MIDI plugin which you can download but it is not very good and it is not a usual file assosciation

I don't know what is playing the midi files. I just know that I started having problems after I upgraded. Could be a coincidence.

I have been having freeze up problems, but have not yet connected it to RP8. Will go on the search. I never have freeze ups during the radio show, and for the most part am Out of all other programs except Crystal Audio all the time. My understanding is that Crystal Audio is my sound driver and I don't dare EXIT it (that from Joe O.)I will try to see what is going on...........freeze ups DO seem to date from when I down loaded RP8, but I don't know Jack.
