"...kids need to have knowledge and skills banged into them;..."

Also sprach Bald Eagle; 'Illiteracy'; 24.7.00 2.04PM

And you call me a prick?

The education system would really be something left in the hands of cunts like you.

Pulling the wings off flies, eh?
I think it's something a bit more serious than that.

Well I'm glad that you are where you are, and my kids are nowhere the fuck near you, you arsewipe

You sit perched on the fence of some of these threads, Cuntface Sam, or whatever the fuck your name is, and you fire your little arrows in at whoever might be carrying on a conversation that you lack the intellectual wherewithal to contribute your tuppence ha'penny to.

Instead you chose to spend your time button-holing others, on who should be calling who by what name. If the person concerned had not wished me to call him by his 'real name', I'm sure he would have let me know, either publicly, or through a PM. Either way, it was none of your fucking business.

Comments on 'mudcat cliqueishness' should be confined to threads that deal with that kind of thing, and 'Garbage dumps' are places for responding to ass-holes like you, who make the very presence of these things, necessary.

As for you, your real name; your whole family tree, in fact: If I was a dog, I wouldn't piss on it.

Let's just agree that you don't really like me, sunshine. Fine. I know why, and I have no problem with that. And I don't need your acceptance for my life to function as normal. I am occupied in much worthier pursuits, and from looking at some of the little jibes you have put in here since I've 'known' you, I can see that somewhere in there is a disturbed individual. Someone who isn't really happy with his lot.

I, on the other hand, am extremely happy with my lot. My life is good.
I have a woman who loves me, kids who think I'm 'OK' (as much as I can hope, I suppose, from teenagers), I do the job I want to do, and my future is full of plans. As it always has been.

I don't pull the wings off flies, wank dog. Through all the tribulations of my childhood, I was always a happy child. I never gritted my teeth in my sleep, stuck pins in dolls, or pulled flies' wings off.

But I can spot fuckwits that did.

Sort of makes 'Tim' a bit mild, now, Eagle, old chum

B.

Is this really such a good idea?

Do all of us need to know what you think of each other?

Can you not just use Personal Messages for this?

Please?

Shambles ... the purpose of this thread is to give people and place to rant, without comment. Everyone has their frustrations and, while we may not agree with them, this is the place to do it, rather than taking up time in the other threads. And, BTW, bald eagle did a good rant in the first thread. I'm not used to seeing such coarse language, but that happens, in the face of anger and frustration. So, please, let the thread be what it is.

Rant without comment? Really? Do we all agree to just listen to each other, without comment, in this one thread? I do. Do the rest of you?

I only asked the questions?

This is a discussion forum. Why would anyone wish to post anything here that did not start or form part of a discussion?

What you are talking about is graffiti......Why not just find a wall?

Rant away...But expect a response..If you don't want a response then don't post.

Please leave personal abuse off of this public forum.

It is only my politely express request.

Shamb,

It is more like a support group where people agree to guidelines. Not the whole forum, of course. This one thread. As an exploration in a new way of handling certain things. A work in progress. With people trying to see if it is useful. To see if something that works well in 3D can work here. Being listened to without judgment, when simple listening is what is most needed.

A lot of people have tried very hard to create and maintain a tone of mutual respect on The Mudcat. To refrain from personal abuse and bad language.

Please think this one through. It will not be possible to contain this in one thread.

Carl Sagan once formulated, or quoted, the rules of a good intellectual discussion. I can't remember them all off hand but one of them is that you should never descend to the level of personal attack. Attack the argument, never the person. I'll try to look them up and get them into this post.

As hard as it is to believe, the other person usually truly believes his point of view is correct and logical. A personal attack gains no points and wins no argument. That being said there is no need for the language that surfaces for an argument cannot feel the sting of the language. Only the other person can. If someone is unable to formulate a reasoned alternative pont of view then his/her post is of little importance anyway and can be disregarded.

How about I start a new trend here.......
Okay everybody, I am pissed off at myself.
I haven't dusted my place in over a month and I see tumbleweeds rolling down my hall.
I promised myself I would repot my plants because they need it so desperately, and yet what do I do?.......I read threads like this instead.
My windows need washing, my stove is a disgrace and my bathroom is not fit to walk into. Yet, here I sit doing everything else than what I said I would do.
I'm disgusted in myself. Such a garbage dump I live in, really!

Dearest Brendy,

wank dog?? I LOVE IT!! Your rant is possibly the best thing I've read in weeks. I do hope that you're feeling the better for it, though. My eldest son is home from university for the weekend and will be taking wank dog back to school to share (hehehehe). However, I have a feeling that since he is a Texas-American, he will be making your fantastic phrase into one word, wankdog -- I hope you don't mind -- You know how we Americans have to abbreviate everything.

I also enjoyed: "As for you, your real name; your whole family tree, in fact: If I was a dog, I wouldn't piss on it." Bloody brilliant cutdown, dear. May I use it, please? How about if I trade you a good ole Texas saying for it -- "If you were snot, you wouldn't even roll off a hot rock." I know, it pales in comparison to yours, but in the summer down here in 'virtual' hell, it packs a whollop.

With all due respect to your wordcraft, Áine

I am starting the week with a major whine. My nephew was screwing around with my computer and just plain fucked it up. And so I missed the European Hearme on Friday and Saturday and developed a major withdrawal headache until this morning at work where I have access to a computer BUT limited time on Mudcat. Bitch! Bitch! Bitch! Anybody know how to undo the damage? He was installing Palm Pilot software and somehow created a permanent FAX connection. When I try to go on line I get a message that software is running or a FAX is operating. Turn them off or reboot. I have repeatedly but still get the same message. Life is not fair.
End of bitch (temporary end of bitch, actually)

The best thing you could do is to go into My Computer, select C drive, select the program that he installed and if there is a remove program, remove it or if not, delete the program entirely. The same thing happened here at work in a similar situation and we had to get the IT group to install it and make some changes so everything would work.

I would suggest you delete, get the computer operating and before you install again, use the customer contact and have them walk you through the re-installation.

I hope this helps

I have a question? I asked this of someone else. If we know who is doing this anonymous flaming, Why don't we just name IT for the world to see? This way we can call it by name, maybe get an email and give them a taste of some direct confrontation.

If this IT is now known to everyone, then maybe they will stop as soon as they realize that they cant hide behind the cloak of anonimity.

Regarding the above guest's suggestion, this is a possibility, BUT, you had better have absolute proof in doing so, because without that proof you will contribute to destroying that which you seek to protect. If you lack the abolsute proof and post a public supposition, you will create and sew more paranoia and distrust and not be doing this forum a favor.

To "another guest" above.

I forgot to reset my cookie for here, BUT I did sign my name. You didn't do either.

But let me clarify what I meant by saying you are absolutely correct. THERE MUST BE PROOF POSITIVE that the individual named is the one. I am not justifying a witch hunt on the basis of supposition.

A number of people are pretty positive of the one or two no name guests identity. If we can get together and prove it , Lets name them.

I am honestly sick of all this paranoid shit! Snarl, grump...

The guest above did not flame, and I agree with everything it said. There's too fucking much personality in here and not enough communication. I don't give a shit who "Another Guest" is. Someone posts a legitimate opinion, and all anyone notices is he/she doesn't have a cookie!!

I don't even give a shit who the anonymous flamers are. I am royally pissed at the way people are treated by what they look like, not how they behave. I have been absolutely sick at the fact that we now have a place on Mudcat specifically for dumping garbage.
I'm sure Max is very happy at the way this place he gave us is being used at the moment. If you respond to the creeps anywhere publicly, in any thread, and they get what they want. Fer Chrissakes, they have special threads just for replies to them! We're handing them the place, and we NEVER learn.

I'm going anonymous. Not to behave any differently than I normally do - simply because I think maybe a couple people may think before flaming. Maybe not.

You apparently are referring to my post. But if anonymous is what you want, please feel free to do so. IF you would care to get something off your chest pertaining to my remarks please PM me.

Have a good day.

Sailor DAn

To end the day on an "up" note: I have solved the riddle of the obstinate computer and am back on line. Thanks to Sailor Dan and others who pinpointed the solution quickly and accurately. Now if you all would be willing to give me lessons in map reading...
Thanks,
Mary

Jeri, how is your going anonymous going to make any difference? Should we all go anonymous? IN a community, which of us agree the Mudcat is, most residents would not be anonymous, they would know each other's first names at least and be able to refer to one another by that and/or by other distinguishing factors, i.e. what kind of car they drive, what colour of house they live in, what kind of dog/cat/kid they have etc.

Same holds true for sessions. Do you go to a session and remain anonymous, does anybody?

Just wondering how you think it will improve things.

kat

How about Jerri locks up the cookie for anonymous? You could become katAnonymous (with only lower case, of course.) Spaw could be anonymous49 - Dan anonymousDan, etc., etc. Then everyone could say, we are not a clique, we are anonymous.

I think you guys all want to claim all the music written by Mr./Ms. Anonymous! Who among you will go for the rest of the music, that written by Mr./Ms. Trad?

Kat's comments about the Mudcat being a community are very much to the point. What real world community is composed of people who all get along well? Any neighborhood is going to have disagreements and arguments, fights and hatreds. Fortunately it will also have great friendships and even, dare I say it, love.

And so it is with the Mudcat. In the real world my house is not the nicest place on the street and thus I could be the cause of some heartache with my neighbors. Here in the Village of Mudcat my house can not be an issue but what I say can be. If I choose not to paint my house or pave my driveway then my neighbors just have to put up with it. If I say something in this village that irritates, annoys, or even infuriates, then my neighbors either have to put up with it or make an issue of it.

Just like the real world!

Unfortunately, Sailor Dan's post here has triggered a nasty Guest post elsewhere. For the record, I object to personal attacks and name calling resulting from a simple difference of opinion especially when done anonymously. AND for the record, Dan is a gentleman whose presence is an asset to Mudcat. Hope you all have read Max's thought for the day. It says it all.

Well, I honestly thought that if people knew someone was out there "anon" who was going to behave well, they wouldn't be so tempted to concentrate on the name. It still might work - everyone would have a cookie free day, and we could have anarchy. People could try to guess who "anonymous49' (as flattop mentioned) was, and who anonpostingwithcatonhead was, and who "Anon, but not an old fogey folkie" was, and who...I will stop now.

A funny thing happened when I went anon. I used a nickname that someone recognised within minutes of me posting. I wanted to respond to other things, but felt as if my name had something to do with the point I'd be making. I also worried that a smart-ass joke would be taken as flaming.

Sailor Dan, it wasn't your post, it was the whole attitude of people thinking that even if the anonymous posters' words are reasonable, it's acceptible to be as rude as they want to to the human being who wrote them. It's kind or ironic when the guests are polite and the people with names aren't.

I'm going to give up talking about it because either others don't listen or if they do, they don't care, and if they do care, they don't agree. I'll try to stick to my own advice and ignore the nastier posts. I'll also steer clear of discussions about flamers or threads for responding to idiots. The flamers seem to be in the spotlight already, without me adding to their prominence. If anyone wants to respond to me because you think I am one, please PM me or I may miss it.

To the above post listed as Guest.

My my you are hostile aren't you.

Please refer to the thread, What do mudcatters want. The 89th posting to that thread is from me to you. Please read it.

Also If you follow either this thread or the thread I refer you to, and go up a bit to another of my postings you will see that I have given you my name and personal email address.

As I have said in the other thread, Have a good day and keep the wind at your back while evacuating.

Hey Sin, I cant find that other hostile remark, I did see it and then lost it when we lost power. Where is it??

Next, should I start poking around using a name??????

Now look. Don't make me come over there. If this is a place where people can dump a rant, that ought to apply to guests too.

You know what? If we would just read, and give basic humane attention to, rants when they come in a thread set aside for them, that would be OK. It really would.

Who the hell am I to say thses things... well one of my day jobs for a LONG TIME has been sorting out organizations that have made themselves sick, including couseling the people on how and why that happened and what fallout remains from it. I don't blow that horn very often here, because I prefer to be just myself here and not be at work when I come here to play.

But today I think I will blow that horn, for a change. Here is your very own, FREE!!! worth THOUSANDS in fees, EXPERT OPINION.

FWIW. *g*

The problem here is not that people say shitty things, it's that we who read them often lack (or forget) good tools for dealing with what we read. We get our own panties in a wad. Some of you prefer to ignore these little hiccups, when you are acting on your own best thinking. Some prefer to respond in a way that tries to be helpful. Some just pray (heavens!!!) Some of us rant back. And we all have what are our best, most rational-at-the-moment reasons for making those choices. I am not talking, here, about the times we lose sight of our thinking and just let fly-- I mean, each of us has some idea what we THINK about good ways to respond.

It's up to each of us to decide what makes sense. BUT THEN a time comes along when WE DON'T DO THAT. We get our own buttons pushed, and go off on someone, or on ourselves (molto uglissimo!!) and then we have this cascade of upset as we all jump in, and rush around trying to fix it.

And what has exacerbated it every time is making a comment on a rant or flame that contains within it a judgment of the CONTENT of the post. I just think that's a bad approach. And now here I am doing it, bigtime, all over those of you who have commented above and in Part One of this thread.

OK, we have this place without rules. If this were a group I was running, I would make a few that would allow discussion to be actually PRODUCTIVE, AND THERE ARE LOTS OF TRICKS IN MY BAG TO DO IT... Damn Capslock! And those of you who PM with me see those tools and tricks in action.

I don't wanna make a rule, here, though, I LIKE the anarchy as much as anyone else.

But here is a PROPOSAL. How about when we lose it and post a judgmental comment, and realize it, we just go back to that thread and post OOPS! And we just MOVE ON???

~Susan

PS-- *!!OOPS!!*

Praise,
You still threatening to go on vacation?
I agree with you. I have tried to avoid obscenity and common language when posting and slipped into the trap today. Shame on me. Double shame - I actually lowered myself to the position of Toady and responded to a flamer.
I hope it is clear that I have no malice against guests or even anonymous posters. My problem is with anonymous writers who spew venom and personal attacks and then hide behind their anonymity. And Dan, go wash your mouth out with soap. I am using Ivory tonight on myself but it's carbolic tomorrow - no excuses.

One of the Mudcat elves has decided to remove certain posts, I think. One is missing from this thread too. I am not sure what the criteria is. Wonder where you put the refuse refused by the garbage dump? Toxic Waste Dump, maybe.

Another suggestion: before responding to ANY provocative post, do a search on the sender. I have found flamers hiding behind Mudcat members (DUHHH, haven't we all?) but before going for the bait (not usually well disguised bait) I have checked and stopped.

Don't mock - my grandfather had a wank dog once. It lived off St Martin's Lane and drank petrol (gasoline) to get high. A very strange dog - and now a dead one!

By the way, while I'm 'on' so to speak, I decided to go 'legit' and become a member of mudcat just a few days ago.
I know it's the garbage dumping thread but I really don't have any as such but I have been really interested in the way in which everyone is coping and trying so hard to keep things friendly!
Fair play to you all and I think I'm addicted already!! I hope in the future that I can contribute something worthwhile.

best wishes, Yvonne

Warbling is ok with me, kat, as long as it's musical. And not just the kids, older folks can warble too, some of them very sweetly. Oh how I miss my warbler, the old mudnester.

Are we not just one big unhappy family, kat? W.C. Fields liked to say that his family was poor but dishonest. A few years ago a woman from P.E.I. asked me why I hadn't gone back to Cape Breton in twenty years. Didn't I have relatives living there? I told her I hadn't gone back because some of them were still living.
