I can picture Lt. Rip leading this song with all the other troops from Fort Apache singing along. Your going back 40+ years for me. No way I can remember the words. Sorry.

"There's an old Indian legend that I heard long time ago. about a far hidden valley and the White Buffalo"

There, I think that was verse 1, perhaps someone will remember the rest.

Not sure it was Rin-TIn-Tin, though. Somehow it's associated in my mind with Cheyenne.

"Cheyenne, Cheyenne, where will you be sleeping tonight. Lonely man, Cheyenne, will your heart stay free and bright? If ever you settle down, where will it be, Cheyenne?"

Ye gods - that's forty years old at least.

Cue for another thread "The persistence of memory as related to Western serials" ?

The Great White Buffalo (5:52)

From The Album : DOGS OF WAR (1995)

Written By : Byford/Quinn/Oliver/Carter/Glockler

Wild horses running free
Bareback warriors ride again
Hear the voices from the spirit world
Crying out for the Indian nation
From the sacred burial mounds
To the happy hunting grounds
Like the moon across the sky
Hear the ancient battle cry

Give the land back to the nations
Let their spirits roam the plains
With the great white buffalo

You were the eagle in the sky
The cunning wolf the running bear
Roaming free from the valley to the prairie
You lived as one on the sacred land
From the river down to the sea
In the wind blowing through the trees
'Round the fire dancing high
Hear the ancient battle cry

Give the land back to the nations
Let their spirits roam the plains
With the great white buffalo
The great white buffalo
The great white buffalo

The mighty fires burn across the land
The Cherokee and the Navaho
Call the nations there to be as one
Gather here all you native bone
Join the spirits hidden in the past
Come together for the tribal dance
Many here are prepared to die
For the ancient battle cry

Give the land back to the nations
Let their spirits roam the plains
Give the land back to the nations
Let their spirits roam the plains
With the great white buffalo

The great white buffalo
(Repeat to end)

A white buffalo calf was born a couple of years ago, somewhere around Montana or Wyoming (?) The American Indians take this very seriously, something like a messiah to them, representing their connection to nature. Many thousands of them have traveled to visit the white buffalo. I haven't heard of that song before but I'm glad it's not something silly. Wonder how it sounds... === Johnny in Oklahoma City

White buffalo calf born several years ago in my adopted hometown, Janesville, WI. Turned brown now but created quite a stir. A real touristattraction yet. I think she's had her own calf now, but I don't know the coloration.

Hi bob! WI is almost like WY -- right?? -- not hardly. The one I was thinking about was a calf, not a heifer ... That might have been an important difference. == Johnny

Gail,

It was Rin Tin Tin and that was ages ago. I remember Rusty looking up and seeing through blurry eyes the White Buffalo. And the song was recorded and available as a ceral premium from the sponsor.

Yes, definitely Rin Tin Tin, my favorite show when I was five. I tried to remember the song and sing it at the time, but it's gone now. It was pretty hokey, with a chorus of cavalrymen and Rusty just as you described.

By the way, I've always wondered why a ten-year-old kid and his dog were being raised by a cavalry unit.

There is a 2-3 year old female white buffalo (Bison bison) in the small herd at Jamestown, ND. The park and pioneer village also contains the world's largest bison, a giant concrete sculpture visible from Interstate 94. In July of this year the female gave birth to a normal colored calf. Keepers of the herd didn't even know she was pregnant. The father is presumably one of the two adult bulls in the herd. This white bison did not originate in this small herd, but was brought in from elsewhere.

I learned this at camp, not on TV, so don't know if it's what yer lookin for. The tune & these words come back to me all of a sudden after about 40 years. Some fun.

Here's what I remember:

There's an old Indian legend I was told long ago.
It's about a special valley and the white buffalo.

There are few who have seen it though they searched high and low,
For the trail is long and winding to the white buffalo.

BRIDGE: The legend says you'll find it if your heart is brave and true,
If you treat all men as brothers no matter what you do.

I have searched for that valley since I started to grow.
I won't rest until I find it and the white buffalo.

While looking for this, I found the official Rin Tin Tin web site. Another litter of his descendants is due August 18th! I wonder how old he'd be in dog years.

Also, the version of the song available online (by "Lt. Rip Masters"/James Brown) is from the MGM recording released after the show.

Unfortunately it's a VERY different version (no echo or repeat for one thing) from the song in the episode.

If anyone knows how to obtain a copy of the song from the show I am VERY interested (have been searching online for weeks- that's how I found this site) and hope you'll write to me at ethveg@comcast.net.

TIA

For years I've remembered this song from the Roy Rogers TV series.
It just shows what tricks the memory can play. Anyway, what I do remember is the (token) young lad in the direct path of the stampeding herd of Buffalos or horses or whatever, suddenly, the stampede veers avay from the child thus saving his life. The lad looks up and sees, on a high ridge above him, the WHITE BUFFALO and he utters the immortal line "I've seen it.....the WHITE BUFFALO.
Oh well, I feel senility creeping on, but I can't for the life of me remember how Rini came into the story.......

For those asking about the song from "Rin-Tin-Tin", as sung by "Lt. Rip Masters" (James Brown) to "Rusty"; here are the words:

LEGEND OF THE WHITE BUFFALO

I have heard many stories, from an old indian friend
And this is my favorite, even though it has no end.

There's an old Indian legend I was told long ago.
It's about a special valley and the white buffalo.

There are few who have seen it though they looked high and low,
For the trail is long and winding to the white buffalo.

BRIDGE:
The legend says you'll find it if your heart is brave and true,
And you treat all men as brothers no matter what they do.

I have searched for that valley since I started to grow.
I won't stop until I find it and the white buffalo.

For I know it's right to find the white buffalo.
