It's Irish Gaelic, as opposed to Scottish Gaelic. The Irish just call it "Irish".

Debbie - "Siúil a rún" means "Go, my darling" (literally, "Walk, my darling", even more literally, "Walk, my secret".

"Siúil go socair agus siúil go cúin" means "Go quietly and carefully".

"Siúil go doras agus éiligh liom" - "Go to the door and return to me".

"Is go dtéirn tú, a mhúirnín, slán" - "And may you go, darling, safe".

My son competes in the Highland Games and a young Irish dancer sang Suil a Ruin at one of them, accompanied by a harp.

I downloaded the song from Limewire -- Artist is Riverdance and album is Lord of the Dance. I must say that the young Irish dancer sings it as well -- my son thought maybe better.

I have wondered what language this is and the meaning of the words that aren't in English? Thanks.

That's a kind thought, but we don't really need yet another repetition of one of the best-known lyrics (see numerous links above). It was a tune that was asked for when this old discussion was recently dragged back from the grave, though no useful information was given that might help us tell which of many forms was wanted.

If people would take the trouble to ask questions intelligently, they might get the answers they hope for. If people would take the trouble to read the questions asked, they might not waste time and space with irrelevant answers.

Ana, if you don't know how use JC's Tunefinder, you can find Shule Aroon in O'Neill's Music of Ireland, which may be at a library near you. In my copy, it is numbers 59 and 60. I don't know whether these are different from the Hughes tune or not.

I have found one version arranged by Herbert Hughes that is titled "Shule Aroon", and has similar lyrics, but a completely different melody than the one you usually hear in recordings... does anyone know of the existence of sheet music for this song, besides the Hughes one?

okay - you can do the dots and snail mail to Dick greenhouse. or scan it and send him the file...

or you can get one of the many programs that will allow you to do abc files or midi files. (many are shareware or freeware) Enter the dots. Then the abc can be posted here, or if you produce a midi you can send the midi to alan of oz, or convert the midi with miditxt and post the result (a text midi file) here.

just need to know how far in the lyrics the 16 bars would fall. it's an audition and they want only 16 bars. She learned the song by ear so doesn't know where relative to the bars the lyrics fall....

Does anyone have the sheet music to this? A friend needs to know what would comprise 16 bars as she sings a cappella - so no lead in, etc, just what would comprise 16 bars of the vocal line??
