Subject: Favorite Broadway show tunes...... From: mactheturk Date: 10 Aug 00 - 06:12 AM I was raised in a home filled with music. My parents had all the Broadway show albums, Camelot, Porgy and Bess, Carousel, King and I etc., etc... After dinner we would all share in the duty of washing the dishes to the sounds of Rogers and Hammerstein or Lerner and Loewe. I have to admit, these songs were great and so are those after dinner memories.

In fact, I have entire favorite shows, like CITY OF ANGELS, RAGTIME, CABARET, GUYS AND DOLLS, (according to Nathan Lane, the quintessential American musical), MY FAIR LADY, CRAZY FOR YOU. Love PORGY AND BESS too, because I'm a huge Gershwin fan. Cannot even think of a favorite single song, or even two.

From: Willie-O Date: 10 Aug 00 - 08:43 AM Never cared for musicals till my daughter discovered records and learned to spin them...I've found certain songs in the pantheon that I quite like playing. Latest one being "It Ain't Necessarily So" from Porgy and Bess (there is a recording on CD of all the songs, performed by LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND ELLA FITZGERALD---now there's a duo). Aside from its just plain fun, I like this one because it gives you a chance to use all that rich Biblical imagery in an agnostic context. Jonah he lived in the whale But it ain't necessarioly so Fiddler on the Roof has some quite enjoyable stuff too, although it does go on too long. "What would have been so terrible if I'd had a small fortune?" And there's one really corny and overused song I've gotten to really like: "Oh What a Beautiful Morning". It's got a terrific melody and an elegant matching of simple chords and lyric, using a diminished chord in just the right place which is not as easy as it seems in a 4-chord special. Willie-O

Each includes forgotten gems, often written for shows that sank without trace. See below: Reviews Amazon.co.uk This 16-CD set collects all of Ella Fitzgerald's Songbooks, a monumental tribute to the American popular song and its greatest composers, recorded for Verve between 1956 and 1964. There is likely no other singer possessed of the mix of talents that Fitzgerald brought to the project, a combination of sheer vocal technique, creativity in phrasing and rhythm, and fidelity to lyrics and intent. The sheer scale of the project contributes to its value, for Fitzgerald went far beyond the standard repertoire, rediscovering little-known gems by many of her subjects: Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Rodgers and Hart, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and Duke Ellington. I was into musicals WAY before I discoverd folk, or even rock music. I love everything that Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever done, I mean EVERYTHING! I also love Stephen Schwartz's "Godspell" and "Pippin". "Zorba" and "The Fantasticks" are also big favorites of mine. Oh, and of COURSE "Les Miserables", hands down the BEST musical EVER made! I own several different cast version...my and my sister sometimes just break out singing certain scenes, not skipping any lines. Also Boublil/Kretzmer/Schoenberg's other creation "Miss Saigon" is also very good. The song "Bui-Doi" is one of the most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard. As for my MOST favorite Broadway showtune? Well, that would WITHOUT A DOUBT would be "All I Ask Of You" from "The Phantom of The Opera." It's OUR song. ;-) |

Can you explain to me how they arrived at Billy Idol as Judas, The Shirelles at the Crucifixion, and the Nazis actually doing the deed? It was just plain weird. Then, with Christ hanging on the cross, the show ends and we were all supposed to applaud. I am not religious but was deeply offended. |

The R+Hammerstein productions contain some excellent show tunes which even if they don't travel very far into the popular music mainstream, they certainly make the shows memorable.
Please supply the names of tunes, from the above authors, which did make it to the charts.....?
I think that "Annie Get Your Gun" has some good songs some of which, in my 'umble opinion, have managed to obtain a life outside of the show.

I vaguely remember hearing someone call that a sensuous interval. Also, has anyone noticed that Bring Him Home from Les Miz is the same as The Humming Chorus from Madama Butterfly? I also heard that Andrew Lloyd Webber plagiarized Pucinni a lot, but I don't know of any more examples. Mary |

They pointed out that the only hummable tune from the show had been plagiarized. I saw it in previews with my son and we both fell asleep. Am I the only one who found it a total bore except of course for the chandelier? For anyone interested: "Shane" is being made into a Broadway show and Mary Chapin Carpenter is doing the music and lyrics. We may have a folk music revival on our hands. |

That musical was such a perfect blending of music, lyrics, dance, and updated story, and has had a powerful impact on me ever since my parents took me to the stage show when it came to San Francisco, when I was 5. I must have seen the movie about 16 times. It just dwarfs other musicals for me (and there are several other musicals I love). Dr. Pangloss's opening song from Candide is a favorite, and most songs from Cabaret and My Fair Lady as well. My parents and a family friend, when they were in their 30's, made up a musical of Moby Dick at a party, and came up with "If you mean well, call me Ishmael, and if you mean ill, call me Ishmill, it's all the same to me..." plus more silliness. Might make a good BS thread - write songs for musicals based on serious books, such as In Cold Blood, or The Best And The Brightest, or.... |

If you liked it (obviously, you are not alone in liking it),I am happy for you. Broadway shows generally are torture to me. Living in NYC, I am forced to accompany out of town vistors to them - my own definition of hell. The only shows I have ever truly enjoyed were Showboat and Titanic. Showboat is a classic. Titanic was panned by the reviewers for a variety of reasons. Most of the time I would be happier if they turned the sound systems off and let me enjoy the sets and costumes. This said, I would never presume to speak as a critic. As for discussing Broadway on Mudcat - it makes at least as much sense as discussing politics, Kendall's medical problems, or your love life. I enjoy your insights Mbo especially when you drip with sarcasm. but you rarely deny others the right to express an opinion different from your own - What's up? My brother and I took a couple of our much older school teachers to see Pal Joey one time and I'll never forget how uncomfortable I was when Vivian Segal sang, I'm wild again, beguiled again, my chasisty belt is unzipped again ... The ladies seemed to enjoy it though. Perhaps had I not been about 17 years old, it wouldn't have bothered me so much. I still like that song though, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. DougR |

"can't help loving' that man of mine" from "south pacific" sorry Mbo.... "Phantom" only had a few good songs and they stuck them all together in the first half..... impressive to watch but got the music got dull very quickly.. "Les Mis" is fantastic.... as was "Return to the Forbidden planet" (Shakespeares long lost rock'n'roll musical!) "Jesus Christ Superstar" is a bit weird the way it ends with the crucifixion... I saw "Godspell" done in Belfast once... it tooo finishes with the crucifixion... but they took Jesus off the cross, put him on a stretcher, and carried him through the audience... half way up the aisle, he jumped off the stretcher and ran back to the stage, to rapturous applause... much nicer ending.... slainte alison |

But speaking of South Pacific...that was the first (and one of the few) times I saw my mother cry. She and my dad were high school sweethearts in Arkansas when the war took him away. She always said that show got to her. I always experience a nostalgia trip when I see Nellie from Little Rock. I also saw a college production of South Pacific where she had to Wash That Man Right Out of Her Hair every nite on stage. The audience was more interested with whether she could pull it off on time than they were listening to the music. Mary |

Benny Green's book "Let's Face The Music" has a chapter on Frank Loesser and on the origins of "Guys And Dolls" from the works of Damon Runyon.
During one rehearsal of the show an actress called Isobel Quigley,

Cole Porter wrote "Let's Misbehave" for the 1928 Musical Paris, but it was dropped from the show and replaced by "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love." Here's the folk connection: another song written for Paris which was dropped was one called Two Little Babes in the Wood. Same story as the traditional folk song, but the lyrics are quite different. It was Oscar Hammerstein II who was the primary lyricist for Jerome Kern's music for "Old Man River" and all the other songs in the 1927 musical Show Boat. Beginning with Oklahoma! in 1943, Hammerstein wrote music for the music of Richard Rodgers, who had been teamed with Lorenz Hart. Don't think Rodgers wrote many lyrics, although he was a prolific composer. -Joe Offer- |

My favourite songs from musicals are "Lament" and "High Flying Adored" from "Evita", "As Long As He Needs Me", "Consider Yourself" and "Where Is Love?" from "Oliver" and "Memory" from "Cats". I've also heard that the musical version of "The Lion King" is good and also the ABBA musical "Mamma Mia". By the way, they DON'T speak about folk on the Les Mis site as far as I know but you'd be better off checking because I only looked at the cast list to see if Tom Lucas from North And South was there!! |

There are a couple of obscure Harold Arlen musicals that have wonderful music - "Jamaica" & "House of Flowers" - hard to find, but if you can get your hands on the recordings, do it. The original cast of Jamaica included Lena Horne, Ricardo Montleban (yes, the rich, Corinthian leather guy, lol), Adelaide Hall, Ossie Davis, & Alvin Ailey. House of Flowers had Pearl Bailey, Ray Walston, Juanita Hall (who, I believe, was the original Bloody Mary in South Pacific), Alvin Ailey, and a very young Diahann Carroll. Both are great for women singers to study phrasing & inflection. Of the more well-known musicals, at the top I'd have to put La Mancha - fine songs, both musically & as character-defining vehicles. Richard Kiley & Joan Diener were terrific. |

I started with the Broadway Cast, with Patty Lupone (AWESOME), Mandy Patinkin, and Bob Gunton, who was the only Peron to use an accent! "Poleeteecs, de art of de posseebul!" Mandy does some awesome flexing of his voice in "The Money Kept Rolling In"! I love "Buenos Aires" too! Especially that part when she screams in Spanish! But it took me a looong time to figure out the "give me the best eider down and silence". That Tim Rice! Not sure about some of the things in the movie. Why did they cut lines from "Oh What a Circus"..."Who am I who dares to keep his head up high while millions weep? What exception to the rule? Opportunist? Traitor? Fool? Or just a man who grew and saw, from 17 to 24, his country bled, crucified, she's not the only one who's died!" and "Ride on my train, o my people, and when it's your turn to die, you'll remember, they fired those cannons, sang lamentations, not just for Eva, for Argentina, not just for Eva, for everybody."??? And why did they give "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" to Eva? It's supposed to be Peron's girlfriend who sings that. Also Camelot, for the title song, and "I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight." I also love Mary Poppins,especially "Chim Chimany" and "Feed the Birds". Hair had some good tunes, including "Let the Sun Shine In",Where Do I Go", and "One." West Side Story for "Maria","America","When You're a Jet", and "Tonight." I have great affection for "I Was Born Under a Wanderin Star" from Paint Your Wagon,especially as sung by Lee Marvin. If I have a bad hangover or a miserable cold,I can approximate his tone. "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess is one of the greatest songs ever written. "Sit Down Yer Rockin' the Boat" is great from Guys and Dolls. What was the heart-rending tune from Oliver,sung by the kid in the title role? And another from Man of LaMancha,sung by DonQuixote, that was very inspirational? |

Everybody sing with the 5th Dimension! Thanks for clearing that up, Firecat! It's weird, at the end of the Soundtrack CD for the movie, the last thing you hear are the tolling bells, and after that there is an actually minute of total silence before the CD stops. The original version was unusual insofar as the record was released before the show was ever staged. This is the one where Julie Covington plays Evita. Many of us were disappointed that Julie didn't get the stage role, which went initially to Elaine Paige. And yes, it does rock - the best thing Lloyd Webber has done,IMHO. |
