Subject: Favorite Broadway show tunes......
From: mactheturk

I was raised in a home filled with music. My parents had all the Broadway show albums, Camelot, Porgy and Bess, Carousel, King and I etc., etc...

After dinner we would all share in the duty of washing the dishes to the sounds of Rogers and Hammerstein or Lerner and Loewe.

I have to admit, these songs were great and so are those after dinner memories.

We had all those albums too. Most, anyway.

Do you remember Those Were the Good Old Days from Damn Yankees? Good enough to have been Tom Lehrer!

Also Poor Jud is Deadfrom Oklahoma (wasn't sure how to spell it until I played back the lyrics of the title song in my head!)

That's a good question. I have so many favorites... In fact, I have entire favorite shows, like CITY OF ANGELS, RAGTIME, CABARET, GUYS AND DOLLS, (according to Nathan Lane, the quintessential American musical), MY FAIR LADY, CRAZY FOR YOU. Love PORGY AND BESS too, because I'm a huge Gershwin fan. Cannot even think of a favorite single song, or even two.

Never cared for musicals till my daughter discovered records and learned to spin them...I've found certain songs in the pantheon that I quite like playing. Latest one being "It Ain't Necessarily So" from Porgy and Bess (there is a recording on CD of all the songs, performed by LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND ELLA FITZGERALD---now there's a duo). Aside from its just plain fun, I like this one because it gives you a chance to use all that rich Biblical imagery in an agnostic context.

Jonah he lived in the whale
Yeah Jonah he lived in a whale
He made his home in that fishes' ab-dough-men
Cause Jonah he lived in the whale.

But it ain't necessarioly so
It ain't necessarily so
The things that you're liable to read in the Bible
They ain't necessarily so.

Fiddler on the Roof has some quite enjoyable stuff too, although it does go on too long. "What would have been so terrible if I'd had a small fortune?"

And there's one really corny and overused song I've gotten to really like: "Oh What a Beautiful Morning". It's got a terrific melody and an elegant matching of simple chords and lyric, using a diminished chord in just the right place which is not as easy as it seems in a 4-chord special.

Anyone who hasn't got the Ella Fitzgerald "Songbook" series (Gershwin/Arlen/Kern etc etc) on LP should note they are issued as a 16 CD box set (99 tracks)at a very reasonable price (UKP 8.99). Each includes forgotten gems, often written for shows that sank without trace.
See below:
Reviews Amazon.co.uk This 16-CD set collects all of Ella Fitzgerald's Songbooks, a monumental tribute to the American popular song and its greatest composers, recorded for Verve between 1956 and 1964. There is likely no other singer possessed of the mix of talents that Fitzgerald brought to the project, a combination of sheer vocal technique, creativity in phrasing and rhythm, and fidelity to lyrics and intent. The sheer scale of the project contributes to its value, for Fitzgerald went far beyond the standard repertoire, rediscovering little-known gems by many of her subjects: Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Rodgers and Hart, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and Duke Ellington. The discs of Ellington material still stand out, illuminated by the presence of Duke and his band. They put Ellington, a master melodist as well as a great composer, in his rightful place in the pantheon of American songwriters. --Stuart Broomer

Oh dear! I think there are too many to mention! I was into musicals WAY before I discoverd folk, or even rock music. I love everything that Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever done, I mean EVERYTHING! I also love Stephen Schwartz's "Godspell" and "Pippin". "Zorba" and "The Fantasticks" are also big favorites of mine. Oh, and of COURSE "Les Miserables", hands down the BEST musical EVER made! I own several different cast version...my and my sister sometimes just break out singing certain scenes, not skipping any lines. Also Boublil/Kretzmer/Schoenberg's other creation "Miss Saigon" is also very good. The song "Bui-Doi" is one of the most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard.

As for my MOST favorite Broadway showtune? Well, that would WITHOUT A DOUBT would be "All I Ask Of You" from "The Phantom of The Opera." It's OUR song. ;-)

death by whiskey,
I was just dragged to JC, Superstar by some well meaning younger cousins. Can you explain to me how they arrived at Billy Idol as Judas, The Shirelles at the Crucifixion, and the Nazis actually doing the deed? It was just plain weird. Then, with Christ hanging on the cross, the show ends and we were all supposed to applaud. I am not religious but was deeply offended.

G'day,

The R+Hammerstein productions contain some excellent show tunes which even if they don't travel very far into the popular music mainstream, they certainly make the shows memorable.

Please supply the names of tunes, from the above authors, which did make it to the charts.....?
"Some Enchanted Evening" recorded by Perry Como is one.

I think that "Annie Get Your Gun" has some good songs some of which, in my 'umble opinion, have managed to obtain a life outside of the show.
This of course was a R+Hammerstein production.

Elizabeth Borden took an ax
And gave her father forty whacks
And when the job was nicely done
She gave her mother forty-one.

Yesterday at old Fall River, Mr. Andrew Borden died
And they got his daughter Lizzie on a charge of homicide
Some say she didn't do it
Others say of course she did
But they all agree miss Lizzie B was a problem kind of kid.
Cause you can't chop your father up in Massachusetts
Then get dressed and go out for a walk
No you can't chop your mother up in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is a far cry from New York

IT IS TO ME

It wasn't done for pleasure
And it wasn't done for spite
And it wasn't done because the lady wasn't very bright
She had always done the slightest thing
That Mom and Poppa bid
When they said Lizzie cut it out
Well...that's exactly what she did
But you can't chop your Father up in Massachusetts
Not even if it's planned as a surprise ("Surprise!")
And you can't chop your Mother up in Massachusetts
You know how neighbors love to criticize.

Has anyone else noticed the melodic interval in Come to Me, Bend to Me from Brigadoon and the very same interval in Music of the Night from Phantom? I vaguely remember hearing someone call that a sensuous interval. Also, has anyone noticed that Bring Him Home from Les Miz is the same as The Humming Chorus from Madama Butterfly? I also heard that Andrew Lloyd Webber plagiarized Pucinni a lot, but I don't know of any more examples.

Yes, Mary. The reviewers jumped all over him for "Come To Me, Bend to Me" when Phantom opened. They pointed out that the only hummable tune from the show had been plagiarized. I saw it in previews with my son and we both fell asleep. Am I the only one who found it a total bore except of course for the chandelier?

For anyone interested:
"Shane" is being made into a Broadway show and Mary Chapin Carpenter is doing the music and lyrics. We may have a folk music revival on our hands.

Humming Chorus my foot! Oh yeah, Bill Caddick ripped off Tchaikovsky for "John O' Dreams", ol'-what's-his-name ripped of Pachelbel for "Streets of London"...shall I continue? BTW I never got through Sweeney Todd...nothing in it had any melody. And Phantom is NOT boring, it RULES! But then again my dearies, if this is a folk/blues site, WHY are we discussing Broadway shows? I wonder if they talk about folk music on the Les Mis home page???

Anything from West Side Story for me. That musical was such a perfect blending of music, lyrics, dance, and updated story, and has had a powerful impact on me ever since my parents took me to the stage show when it came to San Francisco, when I was 5. I must have seen the movie about 16 times. It just dwarfs other musicals for me (and there are several other musicals I love). Dr. Pangloss's opening song from Candide is a favorite, and most songs from Cabaret and My Fair Lady as well. My parents and a family friend, when they were in their 30's, made up a musical of Moby Dick at a party, and came up with "If you mean well, call me Ishmael, and if you mean ill, call me Ishmill, it's all the same to me..." plus more silliness. Might make a good BS thread - write songs for musicals based on serious books, such as In Cold Blood, or The Best And The Brightest, or....

Mbo, I did not say it was boring. I said that I was bored by it. If you liked it (obviously, you are not alone in liking it),I am happy for you. Broadway shows generally are torture to me. Living in NYC, I am forced to accompany out of town vistors to them - my own definition of hell. The only shows I have ever truly enjoyed were Showboat and Titanic. Showboat is a classic. Titanic was panned by the reviewers for a variety of reasons. Most of the time I would be happier if they turned the sound systems off and let me enjoy the sets and costumes. This said, I would never presume to speak as a critic.

As for discussing Broadway on Mudcat - it makes at least as much sense as discussing politics, Kendall's medical problems, or your love life. I enjoy your insights Mbo especially when you drip with sarcasm. but you rarely deny others the right to express an opinion different from your own - What's up?

"You say potato and I say potato
You say tomato and I say tomato" It's OK.

I am suprised that nobody mentioned Hair. Seems it would represent youth and the beloved sixties to many here.

There is a song in it called "Frank Mills" (I think). It's a kindly funny jab at teenage crushes. My favorite line:

"I love him but it embarrasses me to walk down the street with him." Actually, I bet I could pawn it off on Aine as one of my own in a challenge.

One that's always fascinated me is Fugue for Tin Horns, from Guys and Dolls" (I got the horse right here, his name is Paul Revere...). Frank Loesser really had a way with lyrics, and he had fun with those multi-part songs ("Baby It's Cold Outside" and "I Hear Music" are other examples).
I dream that one day, I'll be able to sing all the parts of "Fugue," all at once.

My introduction to Broadway shows was the Dallas Summer Musicals in Texas. My brother and I took a couple of our much older school teachers to see Pal Joey one time and I'll never forget how uncomfortable I was when Vivian Segal sang, I'm wild again, beguiled again, my chasisty belt is unzipped again ...

The ladies seemed to enjoy it though. Perhaps had I not been about 17 years old, it wouldn't have bothered me so much. I still like that song though, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.

Lotte Lenya singing "Pirate Jenny" in The Threepenny Opera (especially the German version) still sends chills up my spine everytime I hear it. I think her rendition of anything by Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht is just about as good as it gets.

Loved all the old Rogers and Hammerstein stuff, and everything with Gene Kelly....

favourite..... "can't help loving' that man of mine" from "south pacific"

sorry Mbo.... "Phantom" only had a few good songs and they stuck them all together in the first half..... impressive to watch but got the music got dull very quickly..

"Les Mis" is fantastic.... as was "Return to the Forbidden planet" (Shakespeares long lost rock'n'roll musical!)

"Jesus Christ Superstar" is a bit weird the way it ends with the crucifixion... I saw "Godspell" done in Belfast once... it tooo finishes with the crucifixion... but they took Jesus off the cross, put him on a stretcher, and carried him through the audience... half way up the aisle, he jumped off the stretcher and ran back to the stage, to rapturous applause... much nicer ending....

Isn't Lizzie Borden from the Fantastics? "What in the world's gonna happen to the hoe-down now"

Hard to narrow it down, but I have to vote for "Guys and Dolls" Fugue for Tinhorn; Follow the Fold; A "poyson" Could Develop a Cold"

But "Annie Get Your Gun" No Biz Like Show Biz

And "Bells Are Ringing" Simple Little System.

Gotta sign off. I gotta go sift through my old LP's and rewire the turntable. I'm in for a long, nostalgic night.

alison, I beieve Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man of Mine is from Showboat. But speaking of South Pacific...that was the first (and one of the few) times I saw my mother cry. She and my dad were high school sweethearts in Arkansas when the war took him away. She always said that show got to her. I always experience a nostalgia trip when I see Nellie from Little Rock. I also saw a college production of South Pacific where she had to Wash That Man Right Out of Her Hair every nite on stage. The audience was more interested with whether she could pull it off on time than they were listening to the music.

G'day,

Regarding "Guys and Dolls":

Benny Green's book "Let's Face The Music" has a chapter on Frank Loesser and on the origins of "Guys And Dolls" from the works of Damon Runyon.
Green mentions a Runyon character called Rusty Charley who could apparently knock an iceman's horse cold with one punch.

During one rehearsal of the show an actress called Isobel Quigley,
who was deputed to sing a song called 'I'll Know' the first line of which is
'I'll know when my love comes along';
between the words 'love' and 'comes' there occurs the interval of a seventh.

Miss Quiqley apparently had to deploy one vocal tone, vaguely soprano-like, for 'love',
and quite another, more contralto-ish for 'comes'.
This very common failing began to exasperate Loesser and after several attempts by Miss Quigley to navigate the leap,
decided on a new and highly original method of bringing about the required effect.
Stepping up on stage , Loesser rushed over to Miss Quigley and charitably bestowed upon her what Rusty Charley gave the iceman's horse.

Most alarming of all is the light the incident casts on the temperament of the first Mrs Loesser.
Her husband, for all his neuroses and outbursts of anger, was considered the less difficult of the two,
a remarkable general opinion explaining the notorious definition of his lady as the evil of two Loessers.

All the above from the pen of Benny Green.

Thanks Benny you will be missed.

Toodle-pip.

We've been working on a jug band version of "Let's Misbehave" which I thought was from "Anything Goes" but the Cole Porter site says no.

Anyway, I'd pay Broadway prices to see Andrew Loyd Weber crucified by Nazis, especially if the Shirelles were there.

Now, this is almost getting into folk music. Cole Porter wrote "Let's Misbehave" for the 1928 Musical Paris, but it was dropped from the show and replaced by "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love." Here's the folk connection: another song written for Paris which was dropped was one called Two Little Babes in the Wood. Same story as the traditional folk song, but the lyrics are quite different. Haven't heard the tune.

Sinsull, you and I share the same feelings for "Show Boat." It is my all time favorite, seen both movie productions and loved each for different reasons. The 1939 version (Available on tape) has Helen Morgan doing "Bill" & "Can't help lovin that man of mine".She had such heart, I was so surprised the !st time I saw her-expected a really sexy vamp. She was the total opposite, but what a voice.Hattie McDaniel & Paul Robson doing "I still suits me.''That wasn"t in either of the 2 revivals I saw.Who knew Irene Dunne could sing? Loved & cried for Ava as poor Julie in te 50's movie' Last revival I saw had Lonette McKee as Julie And Donald O'Connor as Capt. Andy. Pure Delight. Where does "Till there was you" come from?

Evergreen, pine, and autumn blue
But all my days were twice as fair
If I could share
My days with you

My nights are warmer than firecoals
Incense and stars, and smoke bamboo
But nights were warm beyond compare
If I could share
My nights with you

To dance in my dreams
To shine when I need the sun
With you
To hold me when dreams are done

And oh...
My dearest love
If you will take my love
Then all my dreams are truly begun

And as time weaves ribbons of memory
To sweeten life when youth is through
But I would need no memories there
If I could share
My life with you

Michael Milland, it looks like six people posted after you, and not one person noticed your goof. It was Oscar Hammerstein II who was the primary lyricist for Jerome Kern's music for "Old Man River" and all the other songs in the 1927 musical Show Boat. Beginning with Oklahoma! in 1943, Hammerstein wrote music for the music of Richard Rodgers, who had been teamed with Lorenz Hart. Don't think Rodgers wrote many lyrics, although he was a prolific composer.

Regarding "Showboat":

The work of no fewer than five lyricists:-

Hammerstein
Laska
Howard
Harris
Wodehouse

and three composers:-

Harris
Howard
Kern

may be found in the score.

Richard Rodgers wrote words and music for the show "No Strings" (1962)
and also for the new songs in "State Fair" (1962).

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if it counts as a musical, but "Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris" has always been close to my heart. Eric Blau and Mort Schuman's translations were far superior to other people's efforts, though it's always worth while going back to the French originals.

Didn't "Try to Remember" come from the Fantastiks?

My favourite musicals are "Evita", "Oliver" and "Cats" and I'm wanting to sing Eva in "Evita" before I'm 33 'cos that's how old she was when she died.

My favourite songs from musicals are "Lament" and "High Flying Adored" from "Evita", "As Long As He Needs Me", "Consider Yourself" and "Where Is Love?" from "Oliver" and "Memory" from "Cats".

I've also heard that the musical version of "The Lion King" is good and also the ABBA musical "Mamma Mia".

By the way, they DON'T speak about folk on the Les Mis site as far as I know but you'd be better off checking because I only looked at the cast list to see if Tom Lucas from North And South was there!!

Wow! - What a lot of great songs have been mentioned here! There are a couple of obscure Harold Arlen musicals that have wonderful music - "Jamaica" & "House of Flowers" - hard to find, but if you can get your hands on the recordings, do it. The original cast of Jamaica included Lena Horne, Ricardo Montleban (yes, the rich, Corinthian leather guy, lol), Adelaide Hall, Ossie Davis, & Alvin Ailey. House of Flowers had Pearl Bailey, Ray Walston, Juanita Hall (who, I believe, was the original Bloody Mary in South Pacific), Alvin Ailey, and a very young Diahann Carroll. Both are great for women singers to study phrasing & inflection.

Of the more well-known musicals, at the top I'd have to put La Mancha - fine songs, both musically & as character-defining vehicles. Richard Kiley & Joan Diener were terrific.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LADY'S GOT POTENTIAL
From: P05139
Date: 12 Aug 00 - 05:12 PM

Mbo, you've definitely got taste. Mind you, I love the song "You Must Love Me" from the movie, and Madonna looks uncannily like Eva.

They've totally changed the lyrics for "The Lady's Got Potential" in the film, haven't they?

In the original version, the chorus is:-

Just one blast and the insects fall like flies
Kapow! Die! They don't have a chance in the fly-killing world
It's a major advance in my world
It'll mean finance
I'm shaping up successful capitalist-wise

No doubt that you'll be able to find the full lyrics.
In the film, all the lyrics are:-

In June of '43 there was a military coup
Behind it was a gang called the GOU
Who did not feel the need to be elected
They had themselves a body at the point of a gun
They were slightly to the right of Atilla the Hun
A bomb or two and very few objected

Just one show and governments fall like flies
Kapow! Die! They stumble and fall
Bye Bye! Back to the war and cry
We're having a ball
The tank and bullet rule as democracy dies

The lady's got potential
She was setting her sights on making it in movies with her name in lights
The greatest social climber since Cinderella
OK she couldn't act but she had the right friends
And we all know our career depends on knowing the right fella to be stellar

Just one show and governments lose their nerve
Kapow! Die! They stumble and fall
Bye bye! Back to the war and cry
It's how we get the government we deserve

Now the man behind the President calling the shots
And also involved greatly in a lot of the plots
Was Colonel Juan Peron, a would be dictator
He began in the army out in Illiso
Saw Mussolini's rights from the very front row
And reckoned he'd do likewise sooner or later

Just one blast and the tear gas falls like rain
Kapow! Die! They haven't a chance
Bye bye! It's a military advance
Flying the guy by the seat of his pants
Peron was biding time out in the slow lane

Suddenly an earthquake hit the town of San Juan
Kapow! Die! Away from the war but one guy
Was having a ball
The tragedy a golden chance for Peron

He organised a concert with incredible flair
In aid of all the victims
Such a grand affair
Politicians, actors, stars of every flavour
It was January 22nd, 1944
A night to remember
Yeah that's for sure
Cause that's the night that Peron first met Eva
Cause that's the night that Peron first met Eva

At least that's what it sounded like when i got the lyrics off the film! I agree that Antonio Banderas was a brilliant casting choice for Che though!!

Dang girl! You must have a good ear! For the longest time I couldn't figure out what the "Kapow! Die!" thing was. Due to Antonio's accent (which is a cool thing, don't get me wrong) I couldn't get some of the lyrics. What I thought they were are different in someplaces from yours, and I'm not sure which is right! I thought that "back to the war" was "Backs to the wall! Aim high! That Juan guy was having a ball!" But I may be wrong! Now why couldn't they include the lyrics with the CD?

I'm just used to learning things by ear but I kept on rewinding the tape! Oh well!

As Eva says :- "Have I said too much, there's nothing more I can think of to say to you,but all you have to is look at me to know that every word is true!"

BTW did you know that the very first Che, in the original London Cast, was C.T. Wilkinson, who later de-initialized his name as Colm Wilkinson, who created the role of Jean Valjean in Les Mis in London & on Broadway? Oooh I forgot "On This Night of A Thousand Stars" that Augustin Magaldi sings in the beginning of Evita! That's a fun song to sing!

I forgot about Buenos Aires, especially when Eva sings :-

"Rio De La Plata! Florida! Corrientes! Neuve De Julio!"

I always have problems pronouncing that!!

I actually became a fan of Evita after nicking off with my dad's vinyl copy of the cast recording with Julie Covington as Eva.

Oh, and have you got any idea why they didn't bother to get a Fund Manager in the film and got Che to sing it??

You know, I've never actually heard the London Cast? I started with the Broadway Cast, with Patty Lupone (AWESOME), Mandy Patinkin, and Bob Gunton, who was the only Peron to use an accent! "Poleeteecs, de art of de posseebul!"

Mandy does some awesome flexing of his voice in "The Money Kept Rolling In"!

I love "Buenos Aires" too! Especially that part when she screams in Spanish! But it took me a looong time to figure out the "give me the best eider down and silence". That Tim Rice!

Not sure about some of the things in the movie. Why did they cut lines from "Oh What a Circus"..."Who am I who dares to keep his head up high while millions weep? What exception to the rule? Opportunist? Traitor? Fool? Or just a man who grew and saw, from 17 to 24, his country bled, crucified, she's not the only one who's died!" and "Ride on my train, o my people, and when it's your turn to die, you'll remember, they fired those cannons, sang lamentations, not just for Eva, for Argentina, not just for Eva, for everybody."???

And why did they give "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" to Eva? It's supposed to be Peron's girlfriend who sings that. Especially in the movie, when they went and got the awesome Andrea Corr (from The Corrs) to play the part, and give her one big song to Madonna? Puzzlement!!!

have you tried www.musicalheaven.com?

I can give you an approximation, sans two lines that I cannot remember for anything -

On the day I was born, said me father, said he
I've an elegant legacy waitin' for ye
'Tis a rhyme for your lips
& a song for your your heart
To sing it whenever the world falls apart

(cho) Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow it over the hills and stream
Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow the fellow who follows a dream

'Twas a wondrous gift to bequeath to a child
Oh, the lure of that song kept her feet runnin' wild
????????????
????????????

(cho)
So I bundled me heart and I roamed the world free
To the east with the lark, to the west with the sea
And I'll search all the earth and I'll scan all the skies
Till I find it at last in me own true love's eyes

(cho)

Maybe this will stimulate someone to remember the missing lines! At any rate, Musical Heaven is a nice site - although it does have commercial links to Amazon - there is a lot of info on musicals.

Finnegan's Rainbow is a favorite. I like "Look to the Rainbow" and "That Old Devil Moon." Also Camelot, for the title song, and "I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight." I also love Mary Poppins, especially "Chim Chimany" and "Feed the Birds". Hair had some good tunes, including "Let the Sun Shine In",Where Do I Go", and "One." West Side Story for "Maria","America","When You're a Jet", and "Tonight." I have great affection for "I Was Born Under a Wanderin Star" from Paint Your Wagon, especially as sung by Lee Marvin. If I have a bad hangover or a miserable cold,I can approximate his tone. "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess is one of the greatest songs ever written. "Sit Down Yer Rockin' the Boat" is great from Guys and Dolls.

What was the heart-rending tune from Oliver, sung by the kid in the title role? And another from Man of LaMancha, sung by DonQuixote, that was very inspirational?

Yeah, Mbo, I was wondering about "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" as well. Apparently, when madonna got the part of Eva, she INSISTED that she had to sing it. I've just watched the movie, ending up in tears as usual(!) and they've missed out the 2nd verse of Lament that Eva sings and got Che to sing a totally different verse to Peron.

Hope that's cleared up the mystery of Another Suitcase in Another Hall for you!

the London Evita recording is still the best, Julie covington as Eva, Paul Jones as Peron, David Essex as Che, and Barbara Dickson as the mistress......

I saw the musical in London with Colm Wilkinson as Che, he was fantastic, (I'm convinced I saw him as Judas a long time before that), and was thrilled to see him again as Jean Val Jean the next time I was in London......

never saw a Javert to beat Phillip Quast.......

for sheer energy my favourites have to include:-

the barn raising scene from "Seven Brides..."
"June is busting out all over" from "carousel"
and Gene Kelly tap dancing on roller skates from ???"It's always fair weather"....

I love "Brigadoon" even with the fake painted backdrops and the awful accents..... gorgeous movie....

Subject: ADD: Look to the Rainbow
From: Joe Offer
Date: 13 Aug 00 - 02:20 AM

I found the lyrics with a MIDI here (click), along with MIDI files and lyrics for lots of other shows. The lyrics are awful, but the MIDI is OK. I doctored the lyrics, but couldn't get the second word of the last verse.
-Joe Offer-

LOOK TO THE RAINBOW
(lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, music by Burton Lane)
(from the Musical, "Finian's Rainbow," 1946)

On the day I was born,
Said my father, said he
I've an elegant legacy waiting for ye.
Tis a rhyme for your lips
And a song for your heart
To sing it whenever the world falls apart

CHORUS
Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow it over the hill and stream
Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow the fellow who follows a dream

'Twas a sumptuous gift
To bequeath to a child
Oh, the lure of that song kept me feet running wild
For you never grow old
And you never stand still
With whippoorwills singing beyond the next hill.
CHORUS

So I bundled(?) my heart
And I roamed the world free
To the east with the lark
To the west with the sea
And I searched all the earth
And I scanned all the skies
But I found it at last in my own true love's eyes
CHORUS

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LADY'S GOT POTENTIAL
From: alison
Date: 13 Aug 00 - 03:05 AM

Mbo,

I'm not surprise you didn't understand "Kapow, die" that song has been completely changed since the London version.... here are the origianl words which should explain it better taken from the complete libretto 1977

THE LADY'S GOT POTENTIAL
lyrics by Tim Rice, music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

(Che:)
The lady's got potential she ought to go far
She always knows exactly who her best friends are
The greatest social climber since Cinderella
But Eva's not the only one who's getting the breaks
I'm a research chemist who's got what it takes
And my insecticide's gonna be a best seller

(Che brandishes a large bicycle pump type insecticide and is joined by a shrill and enthusiastic trio of girls for his fly killing choruses)

Yeah, just one blast and the insects fall like flies,
kapow, die
They don't have a chance
in the fly killing world
it's a major advance
in my world it'll mean finance
I'm shaping up successful capitalist-wise

But getting back to Eva she just saw those guys
As steps on the ladder to the ultimate prize
And he goes by the name of Colonel Peron
He began his career in the army overseas
Teaching all the other soldiers all he knew about skis
When others took a tumble
He would always stay on

Sure Peron could ski but who needs a snowman?
He said

(Peron)
Great men
Don't grow on trees
I'm one
I ain't gonna freeze
Dictators
Don't grow on skis

(Che)
Peron would be no number two to no man

He'd married in the meantime but the poor girl died
Imagine if she hadn't we'd have been denied
The heart-warming, tear-jerking rise to fame of Eva
Now my insecticide contains no dangerous drugs
It can't harm humans but it's curtains for bugs
If you've got six legs I ain't doing you no favour

Just one blast……… chorus x 2

Oh yes- Peron he joined a faction called the G.O.U.

(Peron & Officers)
G- Government
O- Order
U- Unity

(Che)
and they were the gang behind a military coup
so Peron was a heartbeat away from control of the nation
they thought that Hitler had the war as good as won
They were slightly to the right of Attila the Hun
And Eva set her sights on Peron and his situation
And Eva set her sights on Peron and his situation

(Peron & Officers)

the G.O.U. is a three pronged operation
Government – unopposed and allied
With Order ruthlessly applied
And Unity – those not on our side
Are subject to the process of elimination

G'day,

"Lizzie Borden" in a hoedown-style was created by Michael Brown for a revue called "New Faces" (1952);
there was a filmed version in 1954.

Another musical which included some songs that entered the charts was "The Pajama Game" (1954):

Hey There
Hernando's Hideaway
I'm Not At All In Love

Is anybody familiar with Lionel Bart's work - excluding "Oliver!" ?

Toodle-pip.

Hiya! I'm sure that Cats can only be truly understood by cat owners! I personally know at least THREE Rum Tum Tuggers, TWO Macavities, a Mungojerrie and a Rumpelteazer!!

Perfectly Firecat! Ours is a major Rumpuscat! I even started making up T.S. Eliot-esque names for other cats I see, like "Bumbleboozer". "And you might now and then supply sone caviar or Strausburg pie, some parted grouse or salmon paste--he's sure to have his own personal taste..." BTW Firecat sounds T.S. Eliot-esque too!

Mbo, try to get a copy of the London version of Evita, you'd like it.... and that song was "rocky" even away back then!! *grin*

My two favourite musicals are West Side Story and Guys and Dolls, two choose one song from each it has to be Somewhere from West Side Story and Sit Down you're rocking the boat from Guys & Dolls a real showstopper.

No, Mbo, my name wasn't inspired by T.S Eliot! I got it because I was in a folk group at school called Fireboots and my proper name can be shortened to Kat (my name's Kathryn) so I spelt it like the animal and took the Fire bit from the band name!

As a matter of interest, I suspect that there are at least two "London" versions of the soundtrack of "Evita".

The original version was unusual insofar as the record was released before the show was ever staged. This is the one where Julie Covington plays Evita. Many of us were disappointed that Julie didn't get the stage role, which went initially to Elaine Paige.

And yes, it does rock - the best thing Lloyd Webber has done,IMHO.

Elaine Page is awesome! I once saw a show on PBS that had difference performances she had been in over the years...MAN she is good! I especially loved her singing "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" Oh! Talk about a heart stopper!

Many thanks to "Alison" Joe Offer and "celtic blues 5" You have renewed my faith in the powers of the Mudcat Cafe. A relatively, self-taught newcomber to this medium I have been trying to procure these lyrics since last Xmas, when I first went on-line, without success until now. Now, the "folk " connection ,could I have heard a Burl Ives recording,???? on a radio show, of this song? My favourite version would have to be that by Dinah Washington ?

beachcomber - I don't know if either of them recorded that song. You might look for Dinah on sonic.net - they have a lot of artists' works listed.

Elaine Page played Piaf in a stage show possibly called "Piaf".... she was coached with singing in a French accent......

I forgot one really good song which I don't think has been mentioned yet....

"Downtown" from "Little shop of Horrors"... brilliant

Thanks again Celtic Blues 5, but yes, I do know for sure that Dinah Washington recorded "Look to the rainbow". However it's the Burl Ives recording that I am wondering about? does anyone know of it ? Also , if you are a musician Celticblue 5 have you got a good chord progression for the song "Look to the rainbow" or does anyone else ? Especially Joe Offer or Allison?? I'd be most appreciative. beachcomber (PS How come I've lost my membership status? I'm now down as "Guest" again??)
