She was a stray that started pestering me and my Dad when we were roofing a shed we built back in '96, after Hurricane Fran trashed our aluminum one. Now 4 years later she's living the good life, eats more times a day than she should, weighs 17 pounds, and looooooves to be hugged! (yeah right!) --Matt |

Just after I had moved into my house in Oct.'95, I was working in the garage on a cold and rainy day. Two little girls came up with a soaked bedraggled ball of fur and asked if it was my kitten. I said no it isn't and they said it was on my front porch.So he ended up staying and bonding with me through the winter. Got his name from flaying the skin off my hands while "playing" and from what he would do to the newspapers as I finished reading them. rr |

However, at any given time, I can find at least five semi-feral cats in my yard or on my roof. I live in a duplex, and the guy next door feeds all the cats in the neighborhood. I like cats just fine, but having so many around makes me a little nervous. Besides, some of them don't look too healthy, and they're constantly killing birds and snakes and lizards and other little things. Her father, a grey & white longhair, Tiger, just died a few months ago - at about 15 years & a pound-plus for each year. One temporary cat-in-residence: mush-faced, long-grey-haired Suzanne, who might weigh 3 pounds, fully clothed. |

One is a large black one named "Bones" - because most of his were broken when he was hit by a car (before I got him!) Some kind-hearted person found him on the road and got him to an even kinder-hearted veterinarian, who treated him for months, knowing nobody was ever going to pay the bills. When he was almost better (after 2 months in more-or-less a body cast) I somehow ended up with him. The other is an even larger (close to twenty pounds!) orange tabby that happened along to the same vet clinic while Bones was still in their care. He was also hit by a car, but not hurt badly. The clinic named him "Pumpkin", but I refused to live with a cat named Pumpkin, so we settled on "Jack" - as in "O-Lantern". They've been ruling the house for the last six years. Being orange and black, they're all I need for Halloween decorations. And they make the dogs behave while I'm gone - even the 120 pound Lab/Dane. Someone once said cats own the houses; the people just make the mortgage payments. campfire |

They were raised by a lady in a wheelchair who died five years ago, at which point I was persuaded to abandon my 'no pets' philosophy. I regret only mildly that everything I own and breathe is now filled with fur. They get quite annoyed if I stay on my feet too long, as they are used to having a lap available at all times. |

They, like me, were getting older, and both contracted something, I know not what, so I had, within a three months time interval, have them put to sleep. I loved them dearly, but I decided that I will not have another pet. Too hard when you lose them. I lost a wife, and two wonderful companions within a twelve month period. Too much. DougR |

Orry, a yellow Manx, is mine;at least mine is the lap he can most often be found on and I am the one he bites (yes, BITES) the least.He doesn't like to be messed with. I'm the only one who dares try to pet him if he hasn't indicated-via head butts-that he wants attention. Both are quite vocal and will not use the cat door if there is a human around to open the regular one. They both sleep on the foot of the bed. Wife and I sort of scrunch together in the middle. troll |

Bones insists on being between my ankles - no matter what position I'm in. And Jack sprawls in the middle (top-to-bottom-wise) of the other side of the bed. Of course the foot of the other side is taken up by the elderly Bassett hound that started living with us a year ago. Fortunately, the Lab/Dane prefers to sleep in the living room, but if he's feeling lonely, he's in there, too. He's about the same size as my ex-husband, but I think he takes up more room. Anybody wonder why I'm on the computer instead of in bed? ;-) THERE'S NO ROOM!!!! campfire

From: Sorcha Date: 13 Aug 00 - 12:30 AM OOOOOhhhh, OOOOh LOL!! kat sent me this cartoon last week: dark bedroom with 2 two leggeds and (1? only 1?) cat on the bed, caption said---"It's 3AM, you may pet me now". I told her didn't remind me of anybody I know, there were not enough critters on the bed........What are we, Saps, or what? My bed usually contains 2 corgis, 2 or 3 cats, 1 husband sometimes, and, if there is room, me........ kat/katlaughing has at least 4, Wincing Devil has Sphinxes, LOTS of us are owned by cats. Thank Gods it is not catFISH---I draw the line at fish in my bed. |

SO doesn't know it yet, but I'm getting another one for my birthday next month...... Still have my Shadow, 40,000 fleas and at least 3 'visitors'. The little area we live in has about 10 cats that frequent the roof of the shed next door, and two that have ruined my roses by sleeping on them.... LTS |

From: Naemanson Date: 13 Aug 00 - 09:17 AM My white cat came to me through the good offices of my SO who found her, a bedraggled, fleabitten and very sick kitten, under her car in the church parking lot. She took her to the vets and then brought her home. The SO named her Unity but since then the cat has accumulated a series of names including Ratbrat, White Cat, Destructo the White Tornado, and SSSSSS! (That's a hiss) I don't think she's ever heard the name Unity except at the vet's. Her most common name is White Cat. When my SO decided last February that it was time to go off with someone else she left the White Cat behind. The Ratbrat was my buddy through some pretty tough months. Now that I'm back in that same boat I am depending on her again. And she's coming through with flying colors. She is full of energy and runs through the house when I get home, racing from room to room. She loves to play with string and toys but only tolerates being petted by me. She will not sit with or on anyone but she stays in the room with you because she doesn't like to be left alone. |

However, we have three cats and two kittens in the barn keeping the vermin at bay. I lost three cats to cars last year. You can't keep barn cats penned up or they won't be able to do their job. I just wish people would drive more sensibly. |

From: Morticia Date: 13 Aug 00 - 01:19 PM I am owned by two at the moment......Puddy, and her son Pie......Puddy is tortoishell and getting up there in cat years....eccentric and crotchety ( I swear she'd wear purple if she could) and Pie is a huge ginger thug who requires an inordinate amount of both food and attention at all times of the day and night. We are thinking very seriously about acquiring a kitten as we aren't too sure we'll have Puddy much longer and don't want Pie to be lonely.......so if anyone in the Hampshire/Surrey area knows of any kittens, please let me know. |
