We did rather add bits on to their names:- SmokeyPokey, MintyPooPoo (he had a lot of diarrhoea as a kitten) MurphyPurphy, SimpsonSamson and so on. (I often call my poor husband (Ibrahima) "IbbyBibby", much to his disgust!)
I do love the name of the neighbours' cat who visits me, she's called Pippin. And our other neighbours have Delilah, Tiger Lily and Archie.
My pedigree British Black Shorthair was officially called Ashmere Augustus by his breeder. I won a Premier Medal when showing him at the Cat Fancy shows. But I called him Gussie!

Our cats have been called Pud, Sago, Fig, Toots, Mousse, Monty and Polly. Before we got married, Mrs Steve had a cat called Thick... :-)

I might have mentioned it before, but Toots and I once got our photos in the Guardian Saturday magazine in the This Is My Pet column. Also in the column that week was Catherine Zeta-Jones and her horse... :-)

Back in the 70's my good lady used to "cat-sit" for friends in Liverpool. The only name the cat would respond to was Bollocks.

So you can imagine my good lady standing at the front door of their terraced street shouting out Bollocks! Bollocks! to attract the cat.

Polly is her official full name, Eliza. But you know how it is. It soon gets transmogrified (transmoggyfied?) over time. It's "PollywollyDOOdle!" at the back door, and "Pol" or "Pollywol" in the house...(The "DOO" part, by the way, is done in a loud, high falsetto: we have no neighbours...)

I love Polly's full name - wish I'd chosen more imaginative names for all our cats over the years (Smokey, Misty, Minty, Sam, Murphy, Solo, Gussie, AndyPandy etc) But I needed names you can call outside in the garden to get the little blighters indoors.
I read on another forum that a lady proposed to name her cat 'Jesus' (!!!) Her friend pointed out that she would look an absolute fool standing outside calling "Jeeeesus! Time for bed Jeeesus!" hee hee

Our new(ish) pussycat, Pollywollydoodle (short for Polly), now has three houses apart from the main residence. She has a catden just outside the front door, which we call the pollytunnel (see what I did there?), great for summer use, with an open front. She has an indoor fluffy cave which we will remove as soon as we start lighting the wood stove. Finally, we have the newly-installed winter retreat, as I mentioned earlier, the self-heating one. We're very pleased with it, though she is highly suspicious, for now. It's amazing what you can achieve with a cat via a scant handful of cat biscuits, however...

Meanwhile, back in the suburbs, my house panthers are shifting gradually into their cool-weather activity pattern. Well, not exactly "activity" pattern; it's really about where they choose to snooze -- i.e., on the bed and in the comfy chair instead of on the hardwood floor. When winter sets in, they will move back to the floor, in a cat-basket set on top of a heat vent. They tangle themselves together so snugly it's hard to identify the point where one cat ends and the other begins.

Cats being partly high strung, cunning and paradoxicly sleepy makes them fine comedians imo. In fact early 1900 animation featured cats most often, not the mouse. Felix came first and Sylvester later. Felix refined cartoon animation technically and in story line. They were the cat videos of that era. Many cartoon cats are gone but not forgotten:

It's easy enough to look up the evolution of the domestic cat. The immediate ancestor of all domestic pussycats is the African wildcat, Felis sylvestris lybica. There are eight separate lineages of the cat family, Felidae. The domestic cat belongs to the Felis lineage and is classified as the species Felis catus (clumsy or what). Although all members of the cat family ultimately have a common ancestor, the other lineages of cats (such as lions, leopards, lynxes and pumas, etc.) have been separated from pussycats for ten million years or more. Looks and size don't mean everything, but phylogenetic and DNA studies do...

Island dwarfism requires isolation. Dogs are too variable in size to meet that criterion, and the "domestic" cat (Felis felis) did not emerge from isolation; the species appeared simultaneously in many areas on the fringes of Old World wilderness.

My theory is derived from island dwarfism evolution. Island dwarfism was respondsible for dog sized adult elephants, why not cats.

Speaking of a long line of cats over the years the ancient Egyptians found cats more than useful and adored them unto death and mumified their kitties.
Cats were first domesticated in the Near East around 7500 BC. It was long thought that cat domestication began in ancient Egypt, where cats were venerated from around 3100 BC. As of 2021, there are an estimated 220 million owned and 480 million stray cats in the world. As of 2017, the domestic cat was the second-most popular pet in the United States, with 95 million cats owned. In the United Kingdom, 26% of adults have a cat with an estimated population of 10.9 million pet cats as of 2020.

Dogs on the other hand, already by 11,000 years ago -- before agriculture, and before any other animal had been domesticated -- dogs had not only been domesticated, but they had already diversified genetically and likely spread across large parts of the world, according to Anders Bergstrom, lead author and post-doctoral researcher in the Ancient Genomics Laboratory at London's Francis Crick. In Europe dogs are losing their genetic diversity.

We've just ordered an outdoor winter cat shelter for one. It's self-heating (!), it's slightly off the ground, it has a cat flap and a privacy window that can see out but not in. Wacky or what. It will sit next to our south-facing house wall in a very sheltered spot. We get light frosts only in winter and not many of them. We had three or four nights of-6C last winter, which was unusual. We've had cats for most of the last 45 years and they have always stayed out at night. No smelly litter trays for us. It's pretty safe for cats round here. We've always provided heated shelter for them, but this cat house is a first!

I'm still giving Pippin small snacks (the very best Purina sachets, plus 'real' food such as roast chicken, tuna, carefully boned salmon etc) She chirrups so sweetly and seems to be always very hungry.
Archie is often scrambling across our roof doing his 'mountaineering' hobby, and seems to be madly in love with my very black husband. He waits for his return from work (around 9pm) and rolls about all over his feet. Husband speaks lovingly to him, "'Ello my leetle Arrchie! 'Ow are you dis evening eh?" I don't know how the little cat can see him in the dark, because his cleaner's uniform is all black (and so is he). All you can espy is a large set of very white teeth floating in the air! But they seem to be very close friends.

Ah no, keberoxu, Binky was my very first cat (when I was about three years old!) He was a British Black type of cat. The first in a long long long line of cats over the years.
There's an advert on TV for Dreamies (cat biscuits) and the chap shakes the packet to entice his neighbour's cat/s into his house for 'schnuggles', saying,"I am a cat borrower!" (He has an Eastern European accent) It makes me smile because I'm now a 'cat borrower' too!

Hello there keberoxu!! Sorry for the long absence.
Archie has now grown into a cheeky, inquisitive and feisty little character. He's huge, and has fallen in love with Pippin (female cat that lives behind our houses) He's been neutered though, so no action in that department!
His housemate Delilah is a gentle, affectionate cat, and sits with me on the front bench, or rolls on her back at my feet. Their owner, the shepherdess, has taken in more rescued sheep into her sanctuary, which she runs with her gay partner. I have great hopes that they may get engaged soon. Lovely pair of ladies.

Yes, keb, Bill was the original "free" cat.

He arrived on our doorstep on the fourth day of April 2000 after surviving the entire winter on the street, and crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 16 April 2013. He was a very fine cat indeed, worth every penny.

When we had a working tomcat who beat the bounds of his territory and defended it from all comers, I knew he was losing his mojo on the day he came home covered in mud and reeking of somebody else’s piss. The contents of his bladder is part of the fighting cat’s armament, and poor old Bill had taken a broadside. The mud came from the flower bed in which the battle was fought, and the piss, of course.

Washing Bill was a mob-handed job, but that time he endured our ministrations in the kitchen sink almost meekly until the worst of the mess was out of his fur. Then he erupted like Vesuvius and shot out of the kitchen, making straight for the sofa where he left a large wet spot that took hours to dry.

Typical.

On the positive side, they seem to have a good life in my tank but, on the negative side, they have to be imported all the way from the Americas, during which many may suffer or die..?
