I despair of ever being well again... and that frightens me...

Flying (well, crashing, actually). I clutch a ball of hematite when taking off and landing.

Heights with some precariousness to them...rickety ladders and slippery rock cliffs and old abandoned trestle bridges and such.

Centipedes and millipedes.

Nuclear war (not so much since Reagan left office).

That greed and lack of compassion will destroy the human race and the planet.

Litterbugs. I simpy cannot comprehend this behavior. Ergo it frightens me.

Western medicine and be extension, hospitals.

Very deep water.

Rape.

Murder.

Irradiated and genetically-modified food that is not labeled as such.

eh, the usual!

Little Hawk - My hamster isn't too noisy if I give her carrots to wear down her teeth - she doesn't chew on the bars so much then. And I tied the exercise wheel up of the floor of the cage with a contraption of twist ties and elastic bands. Before I did that the weight of her as she was running would slowly cause the wheel to sink, and it would start rasping against the floor of the cage. VERY LOUD! Especially at 3 o'clock in the morning when you've just finally managed to sleep...

Ella - hamsters smell? I hadn't noticed. (I hope that doesn't mean I smell worse than she does!)

~   ~   ~

Mosquitoes are the worst for me.
The sound just sets me on edge, and I can't stand them crawling on me. The one good thing from it is that I haven't been bitten by any of them for years, since I'm so hypersensitive I smack them off as soon as they land!
It's really strange, if there's only one or two, sometimes I'm more scared. I guess cause ya never know *when* they're going to come after ya.
Even thinking about them I start shuddering reflexively.

I'm fine with most creepy crawlies, as long as
a) they're not in the house
b) they're in the house but harmless
c) I have a container to catch them in if they're poisonous and inside the house

Spiders are fine (and they eat mosquitoes!), snakes are cool (although we don't have rattlers here), moths just startle me, I love bats, mice are cute but messy, insomnia only scares me when I have to get up early.

I was afraid of a glass once when I was really suicidal. I had a vivid picture of me breaking it and slashing my wrists. That part of my life is over now, and I never want to feel that way again.

I am afraid of cold, too. And crazy drivers. And what I could do if I ever got *really* angry.

Oh, sure...First Ella says I'm a sicko, now Susan hates rabbits(Hey, we're LAGOMORPHS!). All because I'm a kind, compassionate guy, who rescued a poor little cockroach. A cockroach that had been trapped in a box for half a week, subjected to the abuse of UPS employees across the nation. For THIS, I am scum? Well, let me say, then, "I'm proud to be a scumbag!" ;)

Ella, I do not like any rodents, not mice, rats, gophers, rabbits, squirrels, gerbils, beavers, capybaras, etc. etc. I have many bad dreams in which rodents play the role of villan. When studying "The Black Death" in school, I had nightmares for weeks! And in a strange twist of fate, that is now part of what I teach to my 7th grade students! Double AAAAAAAAAARGH!

Things that make you sick to your stomach and things that scare you can be so different though....now what really scares me is irrational panic attacks. Fear of the known is okay, you can work through that. but when you wake up in the middle of the night and are completly and utterly panicked - and you don't know why! now THAT is scary!

And I hope to never ever encounter any more thankyou very much. If I ever had them in any house I was in, I think I would be sleepless, sitting there with a big bat, going thump crunch splat.

And Little Hawk.... It happens to be gerbils and rats.

Gerbils, because I looked after a neighbours one once, and it bit me hard.

Rats - erghhhhhhhhhhh

Mice/ Voles awww cute

Wow, they're prehensile? Cool! And the info on the candiru? These bits of info will be SURE to cause nightmares, phobias, and depression to all those who were only mildly creeped-out by my earlier entries. >:D

Ah, cockroaches... My pet cockroach just died last month. No, it wasn't the hissing kind you buy in a pet store. It was a wild roach that travelled up to Minnesota in a box full of t-shirts. Either from Missouri or Pennsylvania, I forget which... I caught him, and made him a little cage, where he lived for about a year and a half. Judging by his development at the time I got him, he was well over 2 years old when he died. VERY low-maintenance pet! And I got to watch his final moult, when he finally grew his wings... Beautiful! Muahahahahaha...

FC, you're missing out bigtime if you haven't seen the movie "Star Trek III:The Wrath of Khan" where Khan puts the Cetial eel in Chekov & his captain's ear. It woooooorks it's way your eustachian tube, and into your brain where it wraps itself around your cerebral cortex, making you "open to suggestion." Earwigs. Earth's version of the Cetian eel? Just to digress a moment - Lepus Rex discussed the fish which swims up the urethra in a much earlier post. Ironically, I had just read a fiction book which had a passage about this fish and had assumed it was fictional. However, a web search for it (it's called the candiru) proved that it is indeed a real creature. Although some of the comments raised doubts about reported amputations and deaths caused by the candiru, others maintained the veracity of such reports. Apparently, since the fish is parasitic and attaches itself normally to the gills of larger fish, sensing their location by the water flow through the gills, the act of urinating in the water can set up enough of a flow to attract them. The rest is history.

One interesting poem about the situation is here:

Well, I have remembered a few more, but they aren't as bad as slugs. Needles, but I am better than I used to be about them. Heights, even when it is Other People on them (falling thing, I think) and I have a lot of trouble crossing swinging foot-bridges. I'll bet I could not drive across the Golden Gate or the Key West bridges. Maybe not even the Verrazzano bridge in NY, and it is fairly short. Think it is the falling thing again. Stoopid part is that slugs can't really hurt me, the others could........duh.

When other kids ran away and called then "pincher bugs", I brought in helpful books with whole article about then, and urged them that the correct term was "earwig", NOT "pincher bug"! BTW you should see then roaches in Japan where we were! Big palmetto bug lookin' thangs. I used to keep a tally of how many I single-handedly squelched..

I've just found another thing I'm scared of. I just saw an earwig crossing the kitchen floor and freaked out. I think this fear stems from when I was at Chester FF and one got into my tent. I came to bed and it was on my pillow and I thought it was a cockroach. One more word about earwigs, youv'e guessed it:- AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Heights--so I joined BALCLUTHA's topsail crew, and now I get to climb 60 feet into the rigging and balance on a rope about two inches in diameter. Of course, it took me about eight months to get up there, and I'm still inching my way higher. A friend observed that I shouldn't worry so much--after about 20 feet, I'd be killed if I fell anyway, so what difference does another 40 or so make? Fortunately, the ship is tied up and doesn't move much.

I still can't walk over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Okay, this is gonna creep everybody out...

My job in the last 20 years has involved tracking and collecting rattlesnakes, handling many varieties of snakes as well as rodents in education programs, and training dolphins.

If you'll permit me a moment of indelicacy, here's the deal with dolphin penises: they're prehensile. Yep, it means "grasping", as in primate hands, giraffe tongues, and dolphin 'love snakes', as otherwise stogy scientists are prone to say.

Once, when my job description included the improbable task of warning nubile grad students about how to predict the impending amorous advances of our research dolphins, I had the occasion to be part of the following conversation...

p.j.: "...and so, when you become aware that one of the males has an erection, you should swim over to tankside and end the session..."

Grad Student: "What did you say about his penis?"

p.j.: "It's prehensile. You know, grasping."

(Long, thoughtful pause.)

Grad Student: "I don't know whether to puke or propose..."

By the way, I'm off today to a local vivarium to pick up a tarantula which I'll be using in a series of upcoming presentations next month. He'll live in the kitchen next to the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake. Honest. I guess if any Mudcatters are planning a visit to the Bay Area and want to stay, you should probably know this...

pj

p.s. By the way, after 20 years of peacefully working with tigers, killer whales, attack dogs and every species of that which creeps and crawls, I am ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED to the proposition that bees are out to get me. It's completely irrational, and totally irrefutable. They are hideous, malevalent creatures who must be destroyed. We'll figure out some other way to pollinate things. I'll help. Just get rid of the bees!!! AAAAUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

Firecat... Don't worry you'll be fine I'm sure.

I got a D (ooo about 12 years ago now - sob sob) at my G.C.S.E's and retook 2 times and maintained a rather consistent D again and again.

So at least I know I am definately mathematically crap.

But it is NOT the end of the world as we know it.

I went on to start A levels - only got one of those. And then did excellently at Uni where I matured and came away with a 2:1 (BA Hons).

So don't despair, there is happy endings.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I'm scared of SPIDERS

earwigs

bulls

dentist noises on tv

bone sawing/drilling noises

leeches (never met one yet though - and not likely to - lol)

Those are all minor ones.

But most of all.....

I have a huge fear of tight small spaces deep underground with water in them... Ie I would never go potholing, the fear of the dark, unknown depths and the knowledge of thousands of tonnes of rock above me.

A rather healthy fear I think.

There we go, all rather silly.

Spider one gets me going with a funny reaction the most...

ooo and snakes.

oooo and gerbils - y uch

I'm not at all neurotic... lol

Lepus - it's perfectly normal for rabbits to panic when trapped or held down, so don't worry about it. What was that other string about thinning hair? That's serious trouble if you're a rabbit. Get medical assistance without delay!

thosp - you're afraid of people with phobias? Ha! You must be in utter terror by now...have you yet run "shrieking from the room"? (for the derivation of that phrase, consult the writings of H.P. Lovecraft).

Everything grows really well in the sub-tropics, so we've got thousands (yes, thousands) around our house and garden, and in the hottest months an eight foot python sunbakes in a big mango tree just an arms length away from our rear deck. But thanks to these critters we have no slugs or snails, virtually no rodents and very few flies. Australia has a complete menagerie of potentially dangerous creatures, and it's great sport to regale visitors with tall tales - sharks, salt water crocs, sundry nasty spiders and snakes - but in truth the number of fatalities is very small with the odds probably of the order of a million to one. Smoking, drinking or driving are eminently more hazardous.

What really frightens me is insomnia. Put a few pythons in the room and I'd probably sleep mush better.

Regards, John

Singing in public. I figured out the other day that some people do extreme sports, I get my adreniline rush from singing in front of people. I get the same rush from public speaking, but it is not as intense because although people can disagree with my point, perspective, or politics, I wouldn't believe them if they said that I was flat or sharp or just off key.

Aaagh! I fear hitting the 'clear entries' box instead of the 'submit message box' after writing a few paragraphs! Here I go again...

Needles! I forgot about my old fear of needles. I'm over it now, but when I was a kid, I'd fight and struggle with doctors trying to take my blood. And dentists had to put me under with gas before putting a needle in my mouth, or I'd shove them away and flee. Good thing I'm over that one. I'd probably get arrested for that now...

And the dolphins... I saw the video of it on Dateline NBC or something like that, a few years ago. Dolphin penises are apparently huge and curved, and it just hooked this around the swimmer's leg like a manacle.

And the little, eurethra-loving fishes... This only happens to men who pee while swimming in the river. If I remember right, they instinctively swim upstream. When they detect the man's 'stream,' they swim right up it, but can't turn back. They have backward curving spines, so can't swim backwards, and just lodge themselves deeper into the poor guy. They die, of course. Infection, surgery... Horror.

Waaiiit... Maybe we could put these in swimming pools? Keep 'em clean? >:)

Hey, I'm scared of bears too! Forgot about that. I think the best way to deal with them is to make a certain amount of noise, so they can hear you from a long way off...a bell, singing, whatever...they hear you and go the other way and you don't meet them unexpectedly. I think I may just have had a nasty encounter with a bear in one or more "previous" lives, if you know what I mean.

Liz - you're scared of a silent room??? My God, woman, how will you ever meditate and get in touch with your inner self if the damn radio and TV are going all the time? If I had a TV here, I'd shoot it and give it a decent burial in the back yard. As for the radio, it makes a good paperweight for my sheet music.

Oh, well, different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Ooh...Lepus, I'm with you...HATE being held down, for any reason. If I have to, I'll hold myself down, say for a shot or something...but I don't want ANYONE else to do it for me. And to be held down and tickled is enough to make me come out kicking...aiming for the most sensitive places!

Have no particular phobias about anything else. Started to take a class in overcoming phobias...that's when I found out that I don't really have any. I don't like spiders, but I have no trouble killing them, if they're in my house...if I'm outside, I simply avoid them if I can. REALLY HATE Palmetto bugs,(for those of you who have never lived in Florida, Palmettos are huge flying cockroaches), but I can certainly beat the crap out of them if I have to. Have never found a use for mosquitoes or ticks...except as annoyances for people and animals. Snakes...not fond of them, but can look at and touch them without panicking.

I like flying, but I don't want to learn how to pilot a plane. A little squeamish about high ledges, etc., but not enough that I'd go nuts if I found myself on one. Would just try NOT to look down! I don't like elevators, (particularly crowded ones), but I do ride on them if need be. Prefer escalators. Of course, being relatively phobia-free doesn't mean I'm completely calm or sane either...

Perhaps that's why I didn't do so well at exams.... all that silence..... I guess I'm terrified of going deaf. I had limited hearing in one ear until I was about 8, and had to go through lots of tests to determine why (malformed ear tube.... got better with age and a doctor who wasn't more keen on horse racing than health issues...)

Sharks. I used to have to swim home at night if I was the the last of 3 to call it a evening, we only had 2 dingys. The swim was about a 1/4 - 1/3 of a mile offshore & at 2:oo pm (when the bars closed or the music stopped) it would always start to get spooky about half way home. It was always comforting when I knew that dolphins were seen swimming close by. Always had a change of clothes & a swim suit in the car & could spend the night in it too if things got to spooky. If you asked a shark the same question they'd say dolphins, if you asked a dolphin they'd say not having any sharks around to have fun with. Barry
