Nuclear war (not so much since Reagan left office). That greed and lack of compassion will destroy the human race and the planet. Litterbugs. I simpy cannot comprehend this behavior. Subject: RE: AAAARGH!!!! From: hesperis Date: 15 Aug 00 - 12:49 PM Little Hawk - My hamster isn't too noisy if I give her carrots to wear down her teeth - she doesn't chew on the bars so much then. And I tied the exercise wheel up of the floor of the cage with a contraption of twist ties and elastic bands. Before I did that the weight of her as she was running would slowly cause the wheel to sink, and it would start rasping against the floor of the cage. VERY LOUD! Especially at 3 o'clock in the morning when you've just finally managed to sleep... Ella - hamsters smell? I hadn't noticed. (I hope that doesn't mean I smell worse than she does!) ~ ~ ~ Mosquitoes are the worst for me. The sound just sets me on edge, and I can't stand them crawling on me. The one good thing from it is that I haven't been bitten by any of them for years, since I'm so hypersensitive I smack them off as soon as they land! It's really strange, if there's only one or two, sometimes I'm more scared. I guess cause ya never know *when* they're going to come after ya. Even thinking about them I start shuddering reflexively. I'm fine with most creepy crawlies, as long as a) they're not in the house b) they're in the house but harmless c) I have a container to catch them in if they're poisonous and inside the house Spiders are fine (and they eat mosquitoes!), snakes are cool (although we don't have rattlers here), moths just startle me, I love bats, mice are cute but messy, insomnia only scares me when I have to get up early. I was afraid of a glass once when I was really suicidal. I had a vivid picture of me breaking it and slashing my wrists. That part of my life is over now, and I never want to feel that way again. I am afraid of cold, too. And crazy drivers. And what I could do if I ever got *really* angry. ~*sirepseh*~ |
Subject: RE: AAAARGH!!!! From: Lepus Rex Date: 15 Aug 00 - 12:43 PM Oh, sure...First Ella says I'm a sicko, now Susan hates rabbits(Hey, we're LAGOMORPHS!). All because I'm a kind, compassionate guy, who rescued a poor little cockroach. A cockroach that had been trapped in a box for half a week, subjected to the abuse of UPS employees across the nation. For THIS, I am scum? Well, let me say, then, "I'm proud to be a scumbag!" ;) ---Lepus Rex (Roaches are cute, in their own filthy way...) |
Subject: RE: AAAARGH!!!! From: Susan from California Date: 15 Aug 00 - 11:21 AM Ella, I do not like any rodents, not mice, rats, gophers, rabbits, squirrels, gerbils, beavers, capybaras, etc. etc. I have many bad dreams in which rodents play the role of villan. When studying "The Black Death" in school, I had nightmares for weeks! And in a strange twist of fate, that is now part of what I teach to my 7th grade students! Double AAAAAAAAAARGH! |

These bits of info will be SURE to cause nightmares, phobias, and depression to all those who were only mildly creeped-out by my earlier entries. >:D Ah, cockroaches... My pet cockroach just died last month. No, it wasn't the hissing kind you buy in a pet store. It was a wild roach that travelled up to Minnesota in a box full of t-shirts. Either from Missouri or Pennsylvania, I forget which... I caught him, and made him a little cage, where he lived for about a year and a half. Judging by his development at the time I got him, he was well over 2 years old when he died. VERY low-maintenance pet! And I got to watch his final moult, when he finally grew his wings... Beautiful! Muahahahahaha... ---Lepus Rex |

Subject: RE: AAAARGH!!!! From: IvanB Date: 14 Aug 00 - 09:00 PM Just to digress a moment - Lepus Rex discussed the fish which swims up the urethra in a much earlier post. Ironically, I had just read a fiction book which had a passage about this fish and had assumed it was fictional. However, a web search for it (it's called the candiru) proved that it is indeed a real creature. Although some of the comments raised doubts about reported amputations and deaths caused by the candiru, others maintained the veracity of such reports. Apparently, since the fish is parasitic and attaches itself normally to the gills of larger fish, sensing their location by the water flow through the gills, the act of urinating in the water can set up enough of a flow to attract them. The rest is history.
One interesting poem about the situation is here: |

Subject: RE: AAAARGH!!!! From: Sorcha Date: 14 Aug 00 - 08:42 PM Well, I have remembered a few more, but they aren't as bad as slugs. Needles, but I am better than I used to be about them. Heights, even when it is Other People on them (falling thing, I think) and I have a lot of trouble crossing swinging foot-bridges. I'll bet I could not drive across the Golden Gate or the Key West bridges. Maybe not even the Verrazzano bridge in NY, and it is fairly short. Think it is the falling thing again. Stoopid part is that slugs can't really hurt me, the others could........duh. |

Subject: RE: AAAARGH!!!! From: Melani Date: 14 Aug 00 - 06:49 PM Heights--so I joined BALCLUTHA's topsail crew, and now I get to climb 60 feet into the rigging and balance on a rope about two inches in diameter. Of course, it took me about eight months to get up there, and I'm still inching my way higher. A friend observed that I shouldn't worry so much--after about 20 feet, I'd be killed if I fell anyway, so what difference does another 40 or so make? Fortunately, the ship is tied up and doesn't move much. I still can't walk over the Golden Gate Bridge. |
Subject: RE: AAAARGH!!!! From: p.j. Date: 14 Aug 00 - 06:44 PM Okay, this is gonna creep everybody out... My job in the last 20 years has involved tracking and collecting rattlesnakes, handling many varieties of snakes as well as rodents in education programs, and training dolphins. If you'll permit me a moment of indelicacy, here's the deal with dolphin penises: they're prehensile. Yep, it means "grasping", as in primate hands, giraffe tongues, and dolphin 'love snakes', as otherwise stogy scientists are prone to say. Once, when my job description included the improbable task of warning nubile grad students about how to predict the impending amorous advances of our research dolphins, I had the occasion to be part of the following conversation... p.j.: "...and so, when you become aware that one of the males has an erection, you should swim over to tankside and end the session..." Grad Student: "What did you say about his penis?" p.j.: "It's prehensile. You know, grasping." (Long, thoughtful pause.) Grad Student: "I don't know whether to puke or propose..."
By the way, I'm off today to a local vivarium to pick up a tarantula which I'll be using in a series of upcoming presentations next month. He'll live in the kitchen next to the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake. Honest. I guess if any Mudcatters are planning a visit to the Bay Area and want to stay, you should probably know this... pj p.s. By the way, after 20 years of peacefully working with tigers, killer whales, attack dogs and every species of that which creeps and crawls, I am ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED to the proposition that bees are out to get me. It's completely irrational, and totally irrefutable. They are hideous, malevalent creatures who must be destroyed. We'll figure out some other way to pollinate things. I'll help. Just get rid of the bees!!! AAAAUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

I got a D (ooo about 12 years ago now - sob sob) at my G.C.S.E's and retook 2 times and maintained a rather consistent D again and again. So at least I know I am definately mathematically crap. But it is NOT the end of the world as we know it. I went on to start A levels - only got one of those. And then did excellently at Uni where I matured and came away with a 2:1 (BA Hons). So don't despair, there is happy endings. Good luck, let us know how you get on. Slan Ella |
