Tried to go from blonde to black once, more years ago than I will tell, and came out green. Made husband at time go to the store and buy the stuff to put it back since the attempt at black was to please him.

I dyed mine blue once. One of those wash in wash out midnight highlights for dark hair. I was purple headed for ages and ash blonde for 6 months. Now I have to do the regular nit checks, I notice that it is getting rapidly more 'salt and peppery' with emphasis on the salt....

Still long though, and still freak out the guys at work with Cousin It impressions.... hee hee hee.

I was dumb and cut my hair (this reminds me of a David Crosby song, how 'bout you all?) Used to wear a gray pony-tail. Shaved off my beard, too for the summer, another dumb idea. I figured it out, If I got my hair cut every six weeks at $25.00 a pop, that would work out to $212.50 per year. Holy cow that's a lotta guitar strings. I can get my favorite bow rehaired five times for that kind of bread, pay two years' worth of car insurance. . . . As for the beard, I just plain ol' got tired of whacking the stuff off every morning. I figger Nature put the fur on a man's face for a reason, let him keep it there. So, sooner or later, I'll be lookin' like my ol' self in the profiles section of this here site.

Hmm... My hair tends to be a topic of great conversation in my circle of friends, so... Long, (when pulled straight, about to the small of my back), but it's very curly, so it only falls to my shoulder blades. There's a huge amount of it, and like Melani, I can tie it in a knot and have it expand to fill the space, so it stays. I usually condition it in the shower, take all the knots out, but I don't dare brush it, because when I do it tries to take over the world... It, like many people's, contains almost all natural hair colours except black, but is primarily dark blonde / auburn. There is yet to be invented a word to describe its colour. It drives me crazy, but I like it anyhow...

Reading this has reminded me that my hair is finally long enough to braid!
I had short-ish hair for far too long.
As for the color, well, when people want to annoy me, they say "shit brown", but it's not really.
I would describe it as a pale shimmery brown with beautiful, natural highlights in the summer and lowlights in the winter.

I went to the post office the other day, and the guy there had an honest-to-God Flattop with Fenders!!! I was so jealous. Back when I had short hair I really wanted to do something like that, or get that Annie Lennox buzz, but I wasn't quite bold enough then. I'm bold enough now, but the long hair serves a purpose. Instead of a flattop, I'm going to have an old tattoo remade into a violin rising from the water, like Excalibur from the lake. :)

Thick red hair, short and balding on top, braid down to my belt in back. The braid was much thicker until this past Saturday, when, a couple of hours before singing at a wedding, in a rush to get a little bit less of the claymore-wielding-Highlander look I took an electric trimmer to the top bits and inadvertently took off the left and right underside bits of what goes into the braid--a generous fistful of hair at least. Could've been a disaster, but the braid's still as long, and with the weather we're having right now, it's much less hot this way.

But a man who cuts his own hair has a fool for a client, or something like that....

My hair used to be longer, but when I was 15, I firmly decided I was going to get a high & tight and keep it short! We were in Okinawa, Japan at the time, and when I sat down in the chair, the Okinawan barber couldn't believe I wanted a high and tight! He kept saying "You want hi-ti?! You want hi-ti?!" Guess not many other military brats were getting them or something!

My hair was waist length when I got married, and it stayed that way, because my ex-husband liked long hair, until the second child was born. Then I just got sick of having little sticky fingers tangled in it. So, I cut it first to shoulder-length, then gradually shorter. Now, it's on the way down again.

Short, so I dont have to think obout it much and no one much notices if I forget to brush it... with a small braid to my shoulder blades. But it used to be middle of the back in a braid on the side or two braids or whatever. Once my boss tied my braid together as they were threatening to stick in the fiberglas resin I was putting on a canoe I was repairing. (His hair was long, too and we would wonder whose hair was in the finish this time.) Mostly brown with some grey. Red when the sun shines through.

Can sympathise with the long hair stories - keep getting mine caught in shirt buttons, wrist ornaments and other people's backpacks on the tube..... Never get a dress that buttons up the back..... I never wear dresses with zippers either now. Come to that, I hardly ever wear a dress!

I like to roll mine into a bun and skewer it to my head with two chopsticks. Those leather bun holders or metal clips are never big enough for the amount of hair I have (see pictures on resources, sorry, don't do clicky things), and pencils are too thick. I have some Japanese chopsticks that are slim and laquered (ah, wish that were me.....) and pointy, so they slip in easily and I never need look for a fork at a party!

LTS who actually bought a bowler hat to do Cousin It impressions.....!

Dark brown, almost black. Very thick- I belong to the hairbrush-snapping club! It's bra-strap-length now but getting longer. When I was 21 it was hip-length; then I thought I ought to look like a grownup and cut it to shoulder-length; in my 30s I cut it down to 1 inch long, now at 40 it's back to the real me. Not much gray yet; and if I inherited my dad's head of hair (as I think/hope I did) I won't start to really go gray for another 10-15 years!
I wear it on one braid most of the time; on really hot days (we've had 3 so far this summer) I wear an old-lady bun, because it's too thick to keep off my neck any other way. In the winter it's like a mink stole- I wear it down and stay warm in all weather!

Its been short and now its a kind of jawline bob - had it cut before Beverley folk festival by the hairdresser from hell -didn't think I would be able to go out for a week -can you have hair extnesions woven into a number one cut?

it sounds like the majority of Mudcat women choose to have long hair. I wonder how that fits into the overall demographics of the people here?

I would grow mine long except that it is so fine that it is gets stringy and is completely unmanageable. So I keep it short.

I haven't given up any of my '60's and 70's ideals. I am just as radical today as I was then. That brings me great joy for I work on a military base and am now in a position to cause great heartburn to the diehard conservatives with whom I work.

Yes, hair can be too long. Mine (when it was down to my waist) used to get caught under my armpits at night while I was asleep. Then I'd change position and my head would get pulled sideways. What a pain in the neck! The Dylan-style mop does not present these problems, but it does cause various ill-informed people who don't know me yet to look askance at me as I pass by. They assume I'm some sort of dangerous deviant or radical. Radical, yes, dangerous, no. Pat Robertson is far more dangerous than I.

The really young kids ask me if I'm a man or a woman sometimes. Poor wretched victims of social stereotyping! They have my compassion...

I'm surprised how many of my peers from the 60's and 70's have utterly abandoned their youthful ideals, and their long hair along with it. Not that it matters what length your hair is...but I hate to see people just lie down in the face of life and surrender.

My hair is reddish brown (hard to describe the color) has currently reached waist level, and is wavy and thick so it goes sideways too, if not kept in elastic bondage. I break standard barrettes, and the odd hair brush. It has been long enough to sit on (around 1979) and will probably get there again. I could, like LtS, brush it down in all directions from a point in the center/top of my head, put a pair of dark glasses on over it and do a decent imitation of Cousin It. It has been as short as an inch long on top - cut with clippers and sort of spikey.

Mine is midway down my back, all one length. Mostly dark blonde although I like to put a little red in it once in awhile. (If you go lookit my picture in the photo gallery you'll see the last time it was really red, back in June. It's all washed out now, though.)

Ten years ago when I got married it was WAY short. I liked it that way, too, but the maintenance and upkeep got to be expensive. Then we got into living history and I wanted to be able to do those funky hairdos from the past, so I let it grow. I like it long, too, except that it tends to get caught in things like purse straps. Ouch!

Mister is losing most of his but he has a very smart goatee.

Blond (now) slightly below collar-length. Trying to let it grow, but I had short hair for a long time, and I get VERY impatient with it. Have had my hair all of natural colors but black. At various times through my life it has also been every length from pixie (a 50s term)cut to slightly below my waist. Think I'll stop this time at mid-back.

Firecat, this is my advise to anyone who wants really long hair. I speak from my own experience. If it's long enough to hang down into a garbage disposal while you're working at the kitchen sink, it's too long.

Also from my own experience. Sitting on your hair is not much fun either. It's a gastly experience when you sit on your hair and in doing so, your head gets yanked way back into an unnatural position and then you can't get up. It's not much fun getting it stuck in car doors either.

As I get older , the most luxuriant growth seems to be in my head, not on it. There's a mat in the plug'ole every time I wash my hair, but my ears and nose - wow, where's the gardening thread gone?!
Nose hairs I can deal with, though. I remember sitting in the pissing rain in a muddy hole in the ground once (defending the empire, or a least a small bit of scrub near Aldershot) when I confided to the guy next to me that the hairs sprouting out of my nostrils were driving me mad with their tickling.
We were both covered in shit, armed to the teeth and looking like a couple of dangerous shrubberies but, surreally, we then embarked on a long conversation on male grooming - the pain of plucking weighed up against the irritating stubble that comes when you jam a pair of scissors up your snout.
Then he whips out his first-aid roll and says in triumph: 'This is the bugger to sort out your nose hairs!'
He's proudly brandishing a very neat angle-head artery clamp, and proceeds to demonstrate how it's done - grabbing a tuft, locking the handles and yanking great armfuls of wire out of each nostril. 'Here, you have a go,' he says.
Call me a wimp, but the idea of using them after he'd reamed his hooter just didn't appeal. To this day I'm a plucker, though.

When I got into chantey singing the hair on top of my head fell out, though there's hair a little lower (see picture on events thread - at Dave and Pam Swan's) and I grew a beard. This is what most chantey singers look like - balding on top and a beard. None of us looked that way before we got into this music. If I knew that was going to happen I would have chosen some other kind of music.

Ah...wonderful hair! A favorite concern of mine. When I was in my twenties I had the longest hair of anyone I knew for a time, brown, straight, parted in the middle. Check out my 24 year old photo in the resource pages.

For a while in the 80's it was kind of short.

Now it's the Bob Dylan type of wild mop, which is great fun and low maintenance. A few gray hairs coming in here and there, but it's still basically brown. Again, check the photos.

Gee, I thought Banjo Bonnie's question was legit. :>) I mean, "Hair - on your head" could be on the scalp, on the ears, in the ears, in the nose, or a moustache or beard. Well, I'm making a perhaps dangerous assumption that people wouldn't cultivate extravagant eyebrows or lashes. Speaking of hair, I had a chance to catch Vince Martin live last night. His scalp is bright and shiny on top, but with mostly gray and wispy shoulder-length hair on the sides and back. He made lots of jokes about it. He gets around with the aid of a walker, but seems to be of high spirits (natural as far as I know). Said he was having a hip replacement come September so he wouldn't have to use the walker anymore. The funniest thing was his new Beltone hearing aids. They kept buzzing on him, loud enough that the microphones picked it up, and he must have tried to adjust the damned things 50 times during the show. He's now living in Virginia and has a year-old granddaughter. Aside from describing himself as a twenty-year old stuck in a sixty-year old body, his best line of teh evening was : "Kids teach you about mortality, but grandkids teach you about immortality." It was an enjoyable evening indeed.

Right now my mostly grey hair is just past my shoulders. It is growing out from the last harvesting. There is a program called "Locks of Love," in which hair is collected and made into wigs for children who have lost their own hair to chemotherapy or other problems.

A local high school participates by giving free haircuts and styles. They wash the hair (while it's still on one's head, by the way), dry it carefully, then put elastic bands at either end and in the middle. Once the hair is cut, it is sent to the volunteer organization which makes the wigs.

My hair doesn't grow as fast as it did when I was younger, so it takes about two years for it to reach the desired length of 12-14 inches.

Anyone interested in the program can get info from any branch of Amer. Cancer Society, and, I'd imagine, from clinics specializing in cancer treatments.

My hair... What's left of it? Heh. Sort of light brown. Varying lenghts. The longest parts are halfway down my back. All sort of ragged and uneven. Like I grew out a bad haircut. Just long hair, sort of parted down the middle, thinning in front. Thinking of shaving it off, since I've had the same 'haircut' for... 10 years or so. And when I go bald, I don't want to look like (watermelon-smashing 'funny'man) Gallagher...

I have thick reddish brown hair about three inches long....beard is red with some dark mixed in....other hair is dark brown....

Actually I do have hair up there. It's just getting thinner with every passing day. Still, I'd rather not hide the sin it's revealing.

And what's left is kind of a dark blonde and my beard is reddish brown except where it's grey. In the summer the hair on top gets lighter and the beard redder.

I keep it short these days but I used to wear it shoulder length. I still have a tendency to forget when my last haircut happened and will wait up to 4 to 6 months for my next one. The beard tends to get bushy and then I trim it back.

I saw the most interesting thing. I exercise in a gym where after a while, you get to know the people around there. This one guy had a bald patch, and I noticed through the years the bald part was significantly taking up more surface area. Recently I saw him and the bald spot was gone. First I thought maybe he had a hair transplant, and then I notice he had dyed the skin within the balding area the color as his hair. I have never seen that before.
I think hair transplants are kind of like rows of tree reforestation. It looks so organized.
I was once married to someone who wore a toupee. I always thought it looked like an artichoke on the top of his head. One day he threw the toupee away and said to me 'I've been asleep for 40 years'

Shoulder length moppette. I had hair to my hips in my twenties but had the brilliant idea that it needed to be curly. Two weeks after the permanent from hell I shaved it off - literally and wore a hat for three months until there was enough to style.Never let it grow past past my shoulders after that. Brown with red and gold highlights - some even natural.

I have short 'red' hair that's been red for so long i can't remember its real colour. I have it short because when I have ever tried growing it, it reaches shoulder length and then thins out to become a kind of long, wispy straggly knot. Short is easy and red is nice.

Firecat, how do you know I am not a 'dumb blond' who has dyed her hair brunette, hoping no one would notice I can't read very well. Ask Catspaw, he knows I can't read very well.
I have very thick long curly ringlets. Having long locks of hair is a lot of fun.

Auburn hair--very very short! I keep it in the USMC "high & tight" style (my Dad used to be in till last year.) Right now it's slightly shorter than see here.
