I thought it was a euphemism, like the Mexican two-step, the Tijuana cha cha or the Sour apple quick step.... Otherwise known as Montezuma's revenge, rusty rain or the squitters.

Liz.. Aztec two Step is a duo .. They sing kind of folky pop stuff. They have quite a following in Mass and Connecticut. If you want info check the web site mentioned above. They are pretty good in concert. Kgh

From memory:

See, it was like this when we waltzed into the room. Two papish cats doing an aztec two-step, and I says "Dad, lets cut". But all of a sudden a dame comes up from behind and says: "Like wow, I think that you and I could really exist". Only the next day I find out that she has bad teeth and hates poetry.

It was on the back of their first album, and I believe it was Feringetti, or some beat poet. Were the duo Rex Fowler and Neil somebody, and are they still a duo?

Lawrence Felinghetti was the poet, "A Coney Island of the Mind" was the poem referenced, and the name is Neil Shulman. As kgh says, they really are pretty fun in concert (they are, indeed, still a duo). Probably their most famous song is "Rabbit in the Moon," or maybe "Baking." Margaret

Sorry-- typographical error -- should read "Ferlinghetti." Margaret

Thanks Margaret V. I saw Neil Shulman (he's the tall one, right?) at a coffeehouse in Nelson, NH a couple of years back. Must have been 10 people in the audience, but he played to a full house.

I found an album of theirs at a Sally Am. Spent a dollar on it because I had heard mention of the Aztec Two-Step here on the Mudcat some months ago. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound of these guys. To me they sounded like a VERY young Simon and Garfunkel but the lyrics are no match at all IMHO.

They have a HECK of a sense of humor, calling themselves Aztec Two Step. In these parts, it means the intestinal infection (I'm not a doctor) you get when you visit Mexico and drink the local water. Being a Margarita- and- Dos Equis man, I've never suffered from it, but I have seen people in the throes, and it's not pretty. == Johnny in Oklahoma City

I think you call that an Okie two-step, but I might be wrong. (For the benefit of the thread police, no derogatory intent was intentionally intended by that remark.)

Aloha
reMark

P.S. Thread uncreep: I remember they played at Tufts in 1970, or maybe it was Cornell in 1974. One would have been with my girlfriend, one with my sister. The fact that I can't remember which it was speaks reams about the sorry state of my memory...

"Had a gig in the sticks, 1976,

Couple of miles off the New Jersey 'pike,

When she walked in, with her husband,

Everybody seemed a little uptight.

So we reminisced, then a goodbye kiss,

And I was left to either sink or swim,

But if you asked me, I can't see

What it was she ever saw in him."

Anybody know the rest?
