He came from the North and his words were few,

Oh! Garryowen may be more gay,
Than this quiet street of Ballibay;
And I know the sun shines softly down

But there's not - I say it with joy and pride -
Better man than mine in Munster wide;
And Limerick town has no happier hearth
Than mine has been with my man of the North.

I wish that in Munster they only knew
The kind, kind neighbors I came unto;
Small hate or scorn would ever be
Between the South and the North Countrie.

Cleod, I don't know the tune for this. Does it bear any relationship to Girl From The North Country by Dylan/Cash?

I believe that the book in question (third edition of the original 1955 publication) contains no tunes or information about the songs or their writers/composers beyond the bare texts.   A later edition (Mercier Paperbacks, 1968) contained limited notes by James N. Healy and some of the melodies.  There is also a second volume, edited by Healy (Mercier,1962).  I can provide a midi of the tune (apparantly also called Dangling of the Babies) if you would like.  I don't hear any obvious relation between it and the Dylan/Cash song.

Sorry John, Malcolm's got it right. This edition doesn't have any tunes or info about the songs (except the composer - sometimes) and neither do I (not coming from a family or culture that bears the remotest possiblity that we could actualy sing these songs).

I'd like to know the tune to which these verses were set.
It doesn't appear to be on the Midii site. Or have I missed it?
