what/where is the Digital Tradition, and if I can look up lyrics there, why post questions of that nature here?

well! In the upper right hand corner....and back at the 'entry' page is a form for searching the 'database' of 6000+ songs....but not every song is there..and not every version, so people ask about things the dont find in the database..(folk & traditional music, mostly)

well, I guess I did notice that, after I posted, but it appears that I did not find this site through the entry page, or at any rate I didn't have it bookmarked through the entry page. When I returned, actually the thingy in the upper right corner wasn't there. I had to erase part of the address and find the beginning of the site.

it's just wierd -- what the heck is onstagemedia anyhow? It doesn't seem to have any logical link to flok songs.

Hi, Rapunzel - Welcome to the Digital Tradition. If you like folk music, this is a good place to be. Onstagemedia is Max, the technical genius behind all this. We like him.
The Digital Tradition database has some 6500 songs, and the tunes for about half of those songs are available here in MIDI format. If you want to know about a folk song not in the database, post a question here in the forum - but we try to restrict the forum to folk music as much as we can.
Hope that helps.

Welcome aboard, Rapunzel

We also enjoy discussions on all aspects of folk music & song. Sometimes lighthearted, sometimes serious and sometimes even downright acrimonous. But we are all friends and have lots of fun.

Bert.

Welcome Rapunzel,
To all of the above add helpful, and only sometimes acrimonous. This site says a lot for the world wide cyber folkie community.

Cheers,
Alan

Rapunzel, I see it's been about 24 hours since your first posting. If you've come back to read this, you're hooked. This site is only nominally about music, I've decided. It's really a shared attitude about life itself. Tastes differ (check some of the discussions about what is a folk song), but the zest for life is the same. Enjoy.

Excuse the intrusion, but as another newcomer, the last two posts say it all for me - I was hooked from day one... Regards to all Sam

Okay, I admit it, I'm hooked. I'll also admit that wasn't my first posting by any means...

Also being quite new - I've located words thru DT. How do I get to the tunes in MIDI format?

Rapunzel's problem raises a good point. The Discussion Forum page should have a link to the database search.

Dick,
I'm not sure why your system doesn't show it but mine has a link to the database from the discussion forum at top right of screen.

Cheers,
Alan

Alan,

Nothing up there _looks_ like a link, but the headline says "Mudcat Cafe" and "A Magazine Dedicated to Blues and Folk Music". Seeing your message, I clicked on it, and the hourglass lit up and it did take me to a home page with mention of the search in something that _does_ look like a link.

So, I change my suggestion: The link to the search should look like a link. :-)

Say, Dick - I wonder why you're not getting the search box. I get it in a blue box on the upper right corner of both the forum home and thread pages like this one. It doesn't look quite like a link, because it's a search box. Every once in a while, I'll get to a page that doesn't have the box, and I can't quite understand why it's not there.
But for me, most of the time it's right there.
As for Barbee's question about MIDI's - if a song has a MIDI, there's a link at the bottom of the lyrics page for that song. The MIDI's are pretty minimal - just enough for you to get an idea of the song - but that's pretty good.
I have found more sophisticated MIDI's at other locations. If anyone is interested, try a Yahoo searc under MIDI, and you'll find a wealth of sources, including some for folk and Celtic music.

I suspect that the presence or absence of the Search Box in the upper right hand corner depends on how the person got here, i.e. using what URL - which would presumably depend on the place they found the link to DT, and whether it was the most recent version or not.

(For no particular reason, I have kept several of my older bookmarks to the discussion forum, as well as the newest one ... I kept thinking I should delete the old ones, but never got around to it, & now am glad that I didn't, so that I can prove my point!)

So for example, at http://www.onstagemedia.com/cgi-shl/dbml.exe?Template=threads.dbm&Title=&Age=30 I do get all the current threads, but there is NO search box, NO link to the new Forum Search, & a somewhat less fancy layout overall.

Whereas at http://www.onstagemedia.com/mudcat/threads.cfm?Title=&Age=30 I get the newer layout, complete with search box & link to Forum Search.

Lastly http://www.onstagemedia.com/mudcat/threads.cfm?Title=&Age=3 is the most recent link provided from the home page, it differs from the one just above only in that the default age is set to 3 (days) rather than to 30.

Perhaps the Site Managers should either provide a link from the old address to the new one "Click HERE to get our new format" - or replace the old site with a message "We have moved to ... " so that newcomers who find the site via links that have not been updated, will nevertheless end up on the newest version of the Discussion Forum. (Ah, always one more thing to do ... )

RS,
That's what I was wondering, but as I had deleted my old bookmarks I couldn't verify it, thanks.

Cheers,
Alan

::laugh:: There, see Rapunzel? What started out as a "hi,what's this all about?" turned into a discussion on the inner workings of the page setup. We do tend to get a bit off track here at times! Though the new tracks we discover are almost always as intriguing/amusing/helpful/what-have-you as the original one.

We are all glad and honored to have you here. . . the more people to share and love this sort of culture, the more it will grow and the more people it can touch.

Welcome, and call if you've need.
