Subject: LYR MUS REQ: Morning Glory
From: Tim
Date: 31 Jul 97 - 12:36 PM

I'm looking for words and chords to an old Clancy Bros. standard named "Morning Glory." The chorus went (and it's) One for the Morning Glory, Two for the early dew, Three for the man who'll stand his ground, And four for the love of you, me girl, four for the love of you. Thanks!

The lyrics are in the DT: HERE'S TO THE MORNING GLORY but there is no attribution.

Did the Clancy Brothers really record this? I don't find any evidence that they did.

If not, who did? And where did it come from? Do we have the right title?

Liam and Tommy recorded it. Try these chords. No guitar handy so I am winging it.

One for THE MORNING GLORY

(G7)At the en(C)d of the d(G)ay, I li(C)ke a little dr(G)ink to ra(C)ise up me vo(G)ice and si(C)ng
And an ho(F)ur or two with a fi(C)ne, brown brew and I'm re(D7)ady for any(G)thing

At the Cross Keys Inn there were sisters four, the landlord's daughters fair
And every night when they'd turn out the light I would tiptoe up the stair
...singin'

cho: O(C)ne for the morning glo(F -C)ry, t(G)wo for the early d(C)ew
Thr(F)ee for the m(G)an who will sta(F)nd h(G)is ro(C)und
And fo(F)ur for the lo(G)ve of y(C)ou, me gi(F)rl,
Fo(C)ur for the lo(F)ve of y(C)ou

I got the call from a foreign shore to go and fight the foe
And I thought no more of the sisters four, but still I was sad to go
I sailed away on a ship, the Morning Glory was her name
And we'd all fall down when the rum went 'round, then get up and start again

I bore once more for my native shore, farewell to the raging seas
And the Cross Keys Inn, it was beckonin', and me heart was filled with glee
For there on the shore were the sisters four with a bundle upon each knee
There were three little girls and a bouncing boy, and they all looked
just like me...

I'm pretty sure Tommy Makem wrote it, too.

I have two Makem/Clancy CDs that call the song Morning Glory and list the songwriters as Doug Flett and Guy Fletcher. The Digital Tradition transcription is pretty close to the recording, except that the put out the light in the first verse.
DT Song Title: "Here's to the Morning Glory"

Here´s what I´ve got:

One For The Morning Glory    Doug Flett & Guy Fletcher

Capo 2nd fret

(C) (C/B) (Am) (G) (F) (G) (C)(hold) (G)(hold)
(C)One for the morning (F)glo(C)ry, (G)two for the early (C)dew,
(F)Three for the (C)man who will (F)stand (G)his (C)round,
And (F)four for the (G)love of (C)you, me (F)girl,
Four for the (G)love of (C)you! (C/B) (Am) (G) (F) (G) (C)(hold) (G)(hold)

At the (C)end of the (G)day, I (C)like a little (F)drink to (C)raise up me (G)voice and (C)sing,
And an (F)hour or two with a (C)fine brown brew, and I'm (D7)ready for any(G)thing. (G7)
At the (C)Cross Keys (G)Inn there were (C)sisters (F)four, the (C)landlord's (G)daughters (C)fair,
And (F)every night when they'd (C)put out the light, I would (D7)tiptoe up the (G)stair, singing!

Well, I (C)got the (G)call from (C)foreign (F)shores to (C)go and (G)fight the (C)foe,
And I (F)thought no more of the (C)sisters four, but (D7)still I was sad to (G)go.(G7)
So I (C)sailed a(G)way on a (C)ship, the (F)'Morning (C)Glory' (G)was her (C)name,
And we'd (F)all fall down when the (C)rum went 'round, then we'd get (D7)up and start a(G)gain, singing!

Well, I (C)bore once (G)more for my (C)native (F)shore, fare(C)well to the (G)raging (C)sea,
And the (F)Cross Keys Inn, it was (C)beckoning, and my (D7)heart was filled with (G)glee. (G7)
But (C)there on the (G)shore were the (C)sisters (F)four with a (C)bundle u(G)pon each (C)knee,
There were (F)three little girls and a (C)bouncing boy, and they (D7)all looked just like (G)me, singing!

Oh, one for the morning (F)glo(C)ry, (G)two for the early (C)dew,
(F)Three for the (C)man who will (F)stand (G)his (C)round,
And (F)four for the (G)love of (C)you, me (F)girl,
Four for the (G)love of (C)you! (C/B) (Am) (G) (F) (G) (C)

This seems to be the original version of this song. Produced by the writers, Fletcher & Flet in 1973. I think they had been listening to Lindisfarne.

I had this by the Clancies/Makem crowd, what a great song. It was called One for the Morning Glory, I'm pretty sure.

The Wurzels did an excellent version of this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uL27Sezboto.
Quite a bit different from the other versions.

According to the "GEST Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador" site at http://www.wtv-zone.com/phyrst/audio/nfld/indexnav.htm :-

this is a traditional shanty:
" A fo'c's'le (forecastle) shanty or forebitter was usually sung by resting sailors gathered about the forebitts, a structure near the bow where crew quarters and anchor chains were located."
This page also features my own version of the song as well as a version by "The Sharecroppers" and as usual, I include lyrics and chords on-screen, but apparently they are not available with iphones or tablets, only PCs

Morning Glory
