www.utahphillips.org

Here you will find information on Utah Phillips, one of the most interesting and creative men I have come across. Described by himself as the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest, he is described by others as a true eclectic, archivist, historian, activist, philosopher, hobo, tramp, member of the IWW, and just about everything in between. Utah's memory contains a wide ranging wealth of lore, which he lets us romp through by way of his shows and recordings. U. Utah Phillips is a nationally known folk artist, singer/story teller, Grammy Award Nominee for his work with Ani Difranco, and hosts his own weekly radio show - Loafer's Glory: The Hobo Jungle of the Mind. He gets out now and then to do a live concert or program, and if he should be appearing in your area, you absolutely have to go see him, as it will be a memorable night.

Hi, ChrisDunn, thanks. If you are interested in more, please go to the Search box, at the top of the threads and enter Utah's name. You will find many threads of discussion concerning him and his music, including a link to an audio file of new song he wrote this year. He has many friends here, including Art Thieme.

I just saw this on a Folk Alliance posting, and it came from
the XM (satellite) radio newsletter.

Rich Warren, folk DJ, was just informed by Utah's Webmaster that
Utah's heart has deteriorated to the point where he can no longer travel, so he will cease all touring. However, he has started a
podcast at: http://www.utahphillips.org/podcast/index.html

I hope you will all "tune in" and listen to the Golden Voice of
the Great South West.

One of the biggest disappontments in my life is that Utah and I will not be able to do that concert tour of the Northeast, yet, I still have the memories of the one we did in Grass Valley California back in April of '06. That was a real kick to be on stage with one of my few heros.

I talked to Utah about 2 weeks ago. He had just returned home from the hospital where he had undergone a seemingly successful heart procedure. I think Mark Ross could tell us more about that procedure's specifics. But Mr. Phillips sounded tired but good---and I was surely glad to hear that. Good thoughts and vibes from here couldn't hurt I suspect!

Onward and upward,

Heal up good, Mr. Utah. This old union organizer still needs to meet you in the flesh, along with that layabout Mr. Morse, and sing a couple of wobbly songs with you. And I could use your help in my current scrap with ICE/Homeland Security, if you are feeling up to it. ***chuckle***

Get well,

All the best,

Utah is a wonderful organizer. He can't help it. When he does a concert
(which he did in Chico a couple of years ago) he encourages the community to network and share and eat and sing together and create all sorts of bonds.

He opens our hearts and minds to supporting each other and sharing with
good causes. He wanted to make sure that his presence in our community
made good things happen for as many people as possible. He wanted to
help the homeless shelter, the peace and justice organization and other caring, like minded projects.

BLESS HIS HEART! (literally)

We should all take after his good example.

Art, it is a designation that qualifying websites can have and in which each has a link leading to the next one in the "ring." Here's their explanation:

"The Folk Music Ring is for web sites containing folk music material; articles, audio, video, etc. This web ring is intended for all ages. Please contact the web ring administrator if a site has links to adult material."

From http://u.webring.com/hub?ring=folk.

There are all kinds of "rings" including Irish ones, etc.

Anybody know where I can get the album he did with Kate Brislin? Can't remember the title but I think it had the word "heart" in it. It's got Miner's Lullaby, Orphan Train plus a lot of other great stuff on it. I've tried everywhere here (Ireland) without success, no joy from Google, and an American friend with an encyclopedic knowledge of this sort of thing said it was very hard to get. This was awhile back, tho - is it still true? Many thanks for any help on this -

My best thoughts & wishes go out to Utah - he has fans in every corner of the globe.

Bonnie, at Utah's website, there's a link to where you can buy it from CD Baby.

The last time I saw him was at Old Songs festival a few years ago. It's a shame if I don't get to see him again, but he's got to take care of himself first. Besides, his songs sure are rambling around in this big old world!

That collection of tunes HEART SONGS is by Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin
(sub title is The Old Time Country songs of Utah Phillips)and includes Utah Phillips' songs as sung and played by Jody and Kate. Liner notes
are by Utah and Jody, with an intro by Alan Senauke, former editor of Sing Out! magazine. It is from Rounder Records. www.rounder.com

Actually, some of them are Utah's lyrics that he never put melodies to, so Kate and Jody did. To wit, "Miner's Lullaby."

I talked to Utah this weekend and he is doing OK, it's just that he can't tour anymore. Most of the info is on the podcast referenced above. Having met him his first performance in NYC at the Gaslight in '69 I feel a little downcast about his announcement, but I would rather knowing that he was still around even though I would have to go down to California to see him. It's the end of an era folks, but we are all the better, having been able to know him and his music. I look forward to him writing a book about his years in the trade.

You can play four episodes of Loafer's Glory at kvmr.org, the public radio station in Nevada City, California. I used to listen to Utah Phillips on Loafer's Glory every Sunday morning. It was a terrific program.

Just got off the phone with Duncan. He tells me that the host computer crashed for the utahphillips.org website several months ago, but that hopefully within a few months utahphillips.org will be back up.

In the meantime, Duncan is working on a revised and greatly expanded version of the original 1973 Starlight on the Rails (print) songbook, as well as a CD of musicians from the state of Utah singing Utah Phillips songs. Both should be out around the beginning of the year.

I'll be seeing Duncan in a couple of months, when he joins me, Emma's Revolution, Pop Wagner, Dakota Dave Hull and Utah's minister Meghan Cefalu for a Unitarian Universalist tribute to Utah Phillips at our General Assembly in Minneapolis. I'm looking forward to that one!

Do check out thelongmemory.com. Duncan has put together a great site.

The official name of the Utah Phillips Website is apparently http://www.thelongmemory.com/. However, the site also answers to the name of www.utahphillips.com and www.utahphillips.org....and maybe others.

The main page of the Website now offers downloads of the first 28 episodes of Utah's Loafer's Glory radio program. There is a special Loafer's Glory download, but it's out of date and offers only 15 episodes. I'm hoping that soon we'll be able to download all 99 episodes of this wonderful program.
