Subject: Stand and Be Counted - David Crosby film From: Alice Date: 19 Aug 00 - 11:26 PM I have been seeing tv ads on The Learning Channel for a film narrated by David Crosby called "Stand Up And Be Counted". You can read about it at discovery.com. The link is on the left hand side of the discovery home page. Here is a bit of what it says:
"Stand and Be Counted North American Premiere, Monday and Tuesday, August 21 and 22, at 9 p.m. TLC and David Crosby, an outspoken voice for social change, are presenting the four-hour Stand and Be Counted, which traces the evolution of musical activism from the nonviolent protests for civil rights to George Harrison's pivotal 1971 Concert for Bangladesh to the recent annual stadium concerts in support of a free Tibet. Rare, in-depth interviews with musicians and activists, including Sir Bob Geldof, Carlos Santana, David Crosby, Harry Belafonte, Jewel, Joan Baez, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tracy Chapman and Willie Nelson, among others, reveal their passions and motivations for organizing and participating in events for change. I understand the book is good too. He describes it as a primer for getting into grass roots activism. Obviously talented, but also a neat guy. Age and illness has brought him a new take on life. I read his autobiography, "Long Time Gone", which is worthwhile just so you can get a sense of how remarkable it is that the guy's still alive. (He spent eight years pretty much non-stop freebasing coke, which meant that he always had a lit blowtorch by his side. Burned up a lot of hotel rooms that way. When CSN did reunion tours during that period, the sets were arranged so that Cros could get offstage and base every 45 minutes.) Aside from that it was pretty much sixties-rock-star stuff--going through women like bags of popcorn, the fast and high life, mansions and boats and all that. And a penchant for weaponry. Of course, since he got through his worst period OK, he's not in the tabloids much. What's he been doing (aside from helping out Melissa Etheridge?) Just curious. I don't get The Learning Channel. David has lent his name and time and given his money to many causes and benefits over the years. That aside, I don't understand the logic of your question. David is the narrator of a documentary that is based on a book that he co-wrote about some dedicated activist/musicians. Your question is the equivalent of asking, "Steven Spielberg, how can he make a film about World War II? He did nothing in the war, he wasn't even born yet?" Your question is also the equivalent of asking, "Mike Seeger, how can he play old-time rural music? He's from an upper-class familuy from Washington, DC." Stupid questions all. Debbie |

That's the story, anyway. Whether he still has a secret life carrying on, I don't know. I was seeing the ads, so I decided to follow up on getting the schedule information for this four hours of interviews and performances that are supposed to be on the topic of musicians/performers and political/social ideology. He co-authored a book on the topic. I think Bill D told me he had read the book. Bill, any comments on the book Stand and Be Counted? |

Since he was described as "an outspoken voice for social change" above, and I didn't get that message from reading his book about his life (as of 1990 or so), I'm wondering what he's been up to. Certainly didn't say or imply that he shouldn't be narrating this movie. So he's "lent his name, time and money to many social causes and benefits"--never said he didn't, so what were they, and has he gotten actively involved in organizing for said causes--which are what? I have nothing against the guy, honest! On the contrary, I'm glad he's still got some of that ol' sixties idealism. Peace, eh.

One of the clips has Carly Simon, James Taylor, (and I believe Crosby and Nash - have the album/can't find it) singing "The Times They Are A-Changin'" from the No Nukes concert. (This is my favorite performance of the song.) Anyway, Crosby has been in it for a long time, whatever self-destructive habits he's had. |

BTW, the Etheridge thing.......He has known her and her SO for a long time and when they approached him on fathering a child for them, he agreed happily as he felt they would be excellent parents. I saw it performed in Kansas City, the second stop on their CSNY2K tour. It's an inspirational tune egging people on to get involved in . . . whatever. Not a bad song, and the more one listens to it, the more it sounds like on old CSNY standard. Some other excellent new songs on the album, too. The four of them, by the way, performed spectacularly |

As a veteran of this place, may I offer a little advice? No matter the answer, I will do it anyway. When something written here hits you the wrong way and inspires you to immediately get up on your high horse, go away and wait one day before responding. This will allow you to seek to understand the context, as well as the content. Perhaps you just misunderstood the question. I have committed the same sin as you by shooting from the cyber lip. And if you come back a day, or a week later and still feel that you have something to say that is important........Then by all means fire away. Willie didn't make any judgements about Crosby, he just asked a question. And I feel it was a fair question. I have been a fan of Crosby's music for years, but I could not tell you what he has done beyond the music if you asked. Mick |

Nice touch to have interviews and then sound bites of the performers performing. I would not call it indepth, but put together the many efforts that have been made in the past 70 years to promote social change and social justice. Worth watching just to raise one's consciousness. |

No, it wasn't in-depth, but it covered a lot of bases and could in fact act as a primer for additional interest. There were some wonderful clips and a lot of interesting comments.
