Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: Brendy Date: 22 Aug 00 - 08:35 PM As there is a 'y' in mine, DougR. ;) No, Mickey. I wasn't 'getting' at you. I was just thinking out loud, and wondering why some people prefer to call people GUEST XXX, rather than just XXX. I just think it's the height of ignorance, that's all. No big deal. You also may have to 'tell' your computer to accept 'cookies' for this site, but DougR has given you good advice. B. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: DougR Date: 22 Aug 00 - 07:17 PM Mickey: you probably HAVE lost your cookie. Go up to Mudcat Resources, scan down to re-set cookie and follow the directions. That should do it. And Brendy, there IS a u in my name you know :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: GUEST,Mickey191 Date: 22 Aug 00 - 07:04 PM Brendy are you referring to me as the "Guest Bit?" If perchance you are-I don't know why I can't shake the guest bit. I signed up quite a while ago, and have made inquires about it - but to no avail. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: Brendy Date: 22 Aug 00 - 01:43 PM I was just wondering, DogR B. |

Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: LR Mole Date: 22 Aug 00 - 10:53 AM Well, very few things transfer, I think: movie/movie, song/drama ("Ode to Billy Joe") and book/movie (I've said for years that the only two movies I'd deem even close to their sources are "Slaughterhouse-5" and "In Cold Blood".) (Oo...am I starting my first thread creep?) To creep further: can a song remake rival or surpass the original, or must any answer in the negative be sentimental? Why is that? |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: thosp Date: 22 Aug 00 - 12:37 AM saw the remake -- i didn't like it -- i kept wondering about the song --- actually it put me to sleep ---- the original kept me rivited ---- peace (Y) thosp |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: DougR Date: 21 Aug 00 - 11:33 PM GUEST, mickey 191: I think I do remember that a re-make of Casablanca was done. Arghhhhhhh! DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: GUEST,Mickey191 Date: 21 Aug 00 - 11:23 PM Didn't they do a remake of "Casablanca" calling it "Rick's Place?" I believe David Soul played Rick. I didn't watch it-you can't improve upon perfection. To me that was more untouchable then any movie, even "High Noon." Does anyone remember the original,British t.v. production of "The Lives and Loves of a She Devil?" I think it ran four or five nights. I've tried every way to track it down, it was a masterpiece in all ways. I would pay to have a copy of that. Someone kept my copy. The movie with Roseanne & Ed Begly was horrific. ' |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: DougR Date: 21 Aug 00 - 07:19 PM The television writer for out local paper just returned from Los Angeles where the TV writers have their annual get-to-gether to preview new shows for the upcoming season. The Director "pitched" HIGH NOON to the writers. When asked about comparisons with the original picture he agreed that no one hoped to better the original. The thought, however, by seeing this version it might motivate young film goers who had not seen the original to see it. Our TV writer suggested, instead, that the young film goers who have not seen the original, not waste two hours watching this version, and just go to the video store and rent the original. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: DougR Date: 21 Aug 00 - 07:14 PM GUEST Colyn Dane: That's pretty good casting and if you're lookin for exteriors a la Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, etc., look no further than "Old Tucson," in Tucson, Arizona. That's where they were filmed. GUEST Algae: I wish you and your banjo had been at my house. I stuck it out for the whole film just to see if it was as bad as I thought it would be. It was. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: GUEST,algae Date: 21 Aug 00 - 03:05 PM We watched the remake for about 20 minutes and shut it off. It was so bad that my wife didn't even complain about me playing banjo while it was on. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: GUEST,Colwyn Dane Date: 21 Aug 00 - 01:47 PM G'day,
I haven't seen the remake of "High Noon".
Somebody mentioned in another thread that "Shane" was going to be made into a Broadway musical.
Just a further thought - I remember only one other movie which had a narritive song Toodle-pip. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: DougR Date: 21 Aug 00 - 12:40 PM Yes, Kendall, I agree with you. The Bounty with Anthony Hopkins is very good. I don't think I have seen him in a film I didn't like though. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: Kim C Date: 21 Aug 00 - 12:35 PM I don't have cable. waaaah :( But I do agree about all these sad attempts at remaking old movies. There are some that just don't need it. Most of them, in fact. Granted, some of the old westerns are a little cheesy. But that's what makes em what they are!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: kendall Date: 21 Aug 00 - 12:34 PM I refuse to watch this new High Noon. However, there have been notable remakes..I have all three versions of Mutiny on the Bounty, and, IMO the second was better than the first (Trevor Howard and Marlon Brando) and The Bounty with Anthony Hopkins, the most recent, is the best of all. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: DougR Date: 21 Aug 00 - 12:22 PM I agree with all of you. I didn't see the Lee Majors film but I seem to recall having the opportunity on TV, starting it but not finishing it. I'll bet you're right, Gary T, about the rights to the song. Maybe it's just as well though. They probably would have hired somebody else to record it and without Tex Ritter, the song would lose its impact, I think. DougR How about "African Queen" with Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts? |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: Gary T Date: 21 Aug 00 - 09:06 AM Doug, I read that there was some sort of legal impediment to using the song in this remake. I can't help but think that it boiled down to someone not wanting to spend the money it would have taken to get rights to use the song (just my opinion, I don't know all the facts). I agree, the song is important to the film. If it was passed over due to someone's stinginess, I think that was stupid. And I definitely agree that 99% of remakes of good films are sad wannabes. I'm afraid the only thing obvious to Hollywood is how to make money. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: sophocleese Date: 21 Aug 00 - 08:58 AM Outland, with Sean Connery was, I thought, a reasonable space age remake of High Noon. I prefer Hollywood, or whoever, to take the plot into a new place rather than simply do an uninspired rerun. Tom Cruise Mission Impossible 2 borrowed too much directly from Notorious. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: Shanti Date: 21 Aug 00 - 07:47 AM It often seems that TV and feature films have run out of original plots, so they're doing remakes of things that were incredible the first time around. The worst feature so far was probably the remake of PSYCHO. I'm sorry, but no one can improve on Hitchcock...even if redone on a frame by frame basis. If Hollywood wants to remake a film that wasn't terrific in the first place, let'em give it a try...but leave the perfect specimins alone. When they remake ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, that will be the final straw. HIGH NOON was an amazing film the first time...and now it should be obvious, even to Hollywood, that it can't be improved on or even come close to. |
Subject: RE: BS: High Noon the remake From: Giac Date: 21 Aug 00 - 05:37 AM Ah, but did anybody see "High Noon, Part 2" with Lee Majors as Will Kane? It was a 1980 made-for-TV movie that was supposed to take place one year after the "real" High Noon, when Will Kane and his wife come back to town to get some horses they have bought. Lots of shooting, minor plot, typical Lee Majors, but worth the 50 cents I paid for it at a yard sale.

Subject: High Noon the remake From: DougR Date: 21 Aug 00 - 12:06 AM I just finished watching the TBS Network's remake of High Noon. What a travesty (In my opinion). I don't know if they had a problem with copywrite, or what, but they evidently didn't recognize how important the song, "High Noon" was to the original film. Tom Skerrit is a good actor, but he's not a Gary Cooper. None of the other cast members measured up to the original actors either, (again in my opinion). There was little tension in the re-make while the original, I thought, was pure tension. Anybody else see it? If so, what did you think? DougR |
