Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Davey Date: 28 Aug 00 - 05:19 PM That's really cute, Jeff... A wonderfullogo for the log-jammers, and some good likenesses there, too. I agree with Tony, however, that Friday night would not be good as it would conflict with song circle, and I have a commitment to that, as do many others. I also will be attending the Greenbank jams once a month, but after the Woods experience I want MORE, MORE, MORE. If we can find a suitable place or places, and agree on a convenient time, I think it's an excellent idea. I have hosted song circles and other music gatherings, but as I live in a semi-detached house the thought of a jam session going into the wee hours would not be a good thing for me to contemplate. Don't think it should be restricted only to the Woods jammers, either, but should be a vehicle for both our enjoyment and an introduction for newcomers into the etiquette of playing with others. Tony, you mentioned using another forum for this discussion. Do you have any ideas? Davey... (:>) |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Little Neophyte Date: 28 Aug 00 - 09:53 PM I love the logo Jeff. We could all wear overalls and have it monogrammed on the bib. I'd offer up my place but being in an apartment, my neighbours have been very tolerant with my banjo playing but I think a gang of us would hit their limits. I'll bake yummies for the gathering. As a Baby Log Jammer I has to find ways to compensate somehow. Bonnie |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Tony Burns Date: 28 Aug 00 - 09:56 PM I've put some Woods 2000 pictures here. See if you can spot the Mudders. |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: MichaelM Date: 28 Aug 00 - 10:04 PM Jeff & Co. I have to grab hold of the Woods history before it leaves the dock. I'm claiming parentage of the jam session. I had wanted for years to start an alternative to the evening dance. (I can dance but don't because I just don't enjoy it.) Pinewoods had an acoustic song swap for non-dancers that I thought might prove popular. When Linda & I helped run the Woods the year that Grit and Judith had an emergency I proposed to the committee that we start up a non-dancer activity in the log cabin; song swap or acoustic jam. The committee was against splitting the campers during an all-community event. I quietly pushed a couple of the movers and shakers among the campers to start something up in the log cabin without it being Woods endorsed. And, finally, here we are. Michael Miland (P.S. That was also the year we started the performer's circle. Ah, snowshoe memories!) |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Jason LaPrade Date: 29 Aug 00 - 09:07 AM Hi Dave and Bonnie. Welcome Back! I hope the rest of your vacations were rewarding. I'm all for the jamming idea. I propose we go back up to Lake Rosseau with the proper moving equipment and transport the log cabin back to Toronto. Failing that idea, I'm sure Lydia would gladly offer the use of her house (she was thinking of doing it for song circle anyway). As a musician/songwriter/live sound engineer I can't afford to buy a house for the jam, and here I am offering someone else's without permission. I'll talk to her about it. As for a day, what about Saturday evening. As long as it doesn't conflict with Acoustic Harvest. Tony, I'd like details on the jam in Greenbank. Jeff, If Bonnie gets a twirling banjo, I want a twirling dobro. Bonnie, I'm looking forward to trying your baked goods. Michael, thanks for whatever part you played in starting the log jam. It's definitely my favourite part of The Woods. Jason. |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: JeffM Date: 29 Aug 00 - 10:04 AM Michael, Like Moses watching the children of Israel entering the holy land without him. The walls of Jamming have come tumbling down. You lead us through 40 days and 40 nights of heathen dancing, parted the Rosseau Sea, and brought us forth unto the land of music and hootenanny. Yeah, though we walked through the shadow of the valley of community activities, you, the man of many Laskins, have allowed your children to be folky and multi instrument players. We shall have no false chords before us. |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Davey Date: 29 Aug 00 - 10:37 AM Jason, and anyone else who is interested in the jam idea, there is now a separate discussion taking place by email. Please contact Tony and ask to get put on the list. Davey... (:>) |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Tony Burns Date: 29 Aug 00 - 11:14 AM Here's where you find information on the Greenbank Jams. If you add yourself to the Greenbank mailing list you will get a reminder each month. |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Faded Denim Date: 29 Aug 00 - 11:47 AM Michael - thanks for the history - important beginnings. Jeff - Praise the Lord and pass the FERTILIZER! What a great thread this is. Love your logo's Jeff and I think Banjo Bonnie has the right idea. I also like Jason's idea about bringing the Log Cabin HERE!! If we call ouselves Log Jammers, then the Log Driver's Waltz could be our theme song. I've put in my 2 cents worth on the e-mail discussion group. Let me know your further thoughts. |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Froggie (inactive) Date: 29 Aug 00 - 05:03 PM Hi everyone! Hey, I'd love to volunteer my house for a Log Cabin jam. Just let me check with Jason to make sure he hasn't already volunteered it out to a bunch of Mudcatters.... Cost for use of my abode will be one twirling fiddle... Bonnie, treats are welcome as long as recipes are included (please?). Alright people, pick a night, day, evening, afternoon, etc... but please give Jason and I ample warning so we can clean up and chase away the dust elephants. LydiaB

Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: JeffM Date: 31 Aug 00 - 11:30 AM Well, Lydia, I don't know about the twirling fiddle, but I might be able to conjure up a whirling dervish or a Tazmanian Devil? Either way, I'll be your spin doctor, if I can get around to it by some twist of fate or turn of events. Dust elephants? You mean they will be truncated? |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: GUEST,Latecomer Aida Date: 31 Aug 00 - 04:09 PM Sorry, I'm adding my two cents worth so late; don't mean to reopen the thread - but what a great thread!- and I echo everyone's sentiments. The Woods is one truly amazing experience. My mind often doesn't work for me like I want it to or feel it should, so sometimes I'm slow.....I don't always take advantage of all that's offered at The Woods and miss out on alot due to my simplicity/stupidity (those that know me will know what I mean). However, I want to belatedly thank Eve, Sue, Grit & Judith for their dedication and committment; enthusiasm and vision, for everything they do to make The Woods a top-knotch experience; we're truly blessed to have such a remarkable committee who brings us all those remarkable musicians. And I want to thank black walnut, Tony, JeffM, Lydia & Jason, Faded Denim, Banjo Bonnie, Davey, Jack, Linda & Michael and all the new campers I met who supported me and made this Woods so much fun. And the Logjammers idea....Hey, I'm all for it!! What'll I jam with??!! My voice?! Anytime you would like to use my home, I will gladly host (Sat. night preferred if it doesn't conflict with Acoustic Harvest). Lillian Wauthier |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: balladeer Date: 31 Aug 00 - 08:38 PM Hi everyone; I've been following the thread along and now feel impelled to add my two cents. A wonderful Woods. A very supportive group all around. Teachers with great talents and great teaching skills who made their presence felt everywhere. Add my naame to that Saturday night jamming list.... |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: GUEST,Bouzouki Bob Date: 31 Aug 00 - 10:07 PM Can anyone explain why this thread was off-line yesterday? I looked for it several times, but could not find it. |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Little Neophyte Date: 01 Sep 00 - 07:15 AM Lydia all my cookies come with the recipe. Did you ever watch the Flintstones where Betty left out the secret ingredient in her recipe for Stegosaurus burgers (I think it was the mustard) and it started a big fight between her and Wilma? I would never do that. As for dust elephants, I hired the Tazmanian Devil to be my house cleaner. He looks so cute in a maid's outfit. Give him a damp rag and within a few spins my place is spotless except for all those loose hairs that fly off him. Banjo Bunny |

Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Rick Fielding Date: 01 Sep 00 - 10:06 AM Just for those who might not know. Several years ago I had become totally disgusted with the music business...every aspect, from dealing with agents, to playing for (high class) drunks in supposedly posh hotels, working paycheck to paycheck (I couldn't save a dime even though I was making good bucks) and in general, feeling that my music had no value other than in a "job" sense. Judith Laskin heard me on a CBC radio show, and Grit hired me to play and teach at "The Woods". During those four days my life changed 360 degrees. I met so many wonderful people who LOVED folk music as much as I did, and all my teenage enthusiasm came back like a tidal wave! I met Sandy and Caroline Paton who asked me to sign with Folk-Legacy Records, and started my regular touring jaunts to New England. The last 8 years of my life have been so rewarding, I don't really have the words to describe it. Thank you "Woods"! Rick |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Jason LaPrade Date: 01 Sep 00 - 10:11 PM I think I speak for everyone here when I say we're glad you're still making music, Rick. By the way, I think it's about time for your return visit to The Woods. Are Judith, Grit, Sue or Eve listening? Jason. |
Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: black walnut Date: 02 Sep 00 - 03:42 PM i disappear for just six days, and the whole toronto folk scene mutates! if this means hearing more of lydia's fiddle, i'm in.... ~black walnut |

Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: Ferrara Date: 03 Sep 00 - 03:29 PM Alice, I also have a songbook for children by Ruth Crawford Seeger. The co-op school where the songs were put in practice was in Silver Spring, MD, near my home. I was so pleased to see a dedication to Glenora Horne, one of the moms who helped make the music happen. Glenora's daughter was my roommate in college for a while, and my mother and Glenora became close friends. When I told her I was learning to play folk guitar (around 1966), she said, "that's lovely, dear. My sister and I used to play guitar and give folk music concerts [I think she said it was in the 20's, maybe not]. I have a dulcimer made by Howie Mitchell, he's a dear friend of mine." I had no idea. Just a reminiscence. Probably doesn't belong here but what the hey.
Any discussion about folksongs in public schools today?

Subject: RE: The Woods 2000 From: black walnut Date: 03 Sep 00 - 03:29 PM thanks, balladeer.... i just got back from a few days on an island in georgian bay; no electricity, no telephone, no computer....also no harp, no guitar, no dulcimer, no piano. my tin whistles were allowed into the precious boat-packing space, but it wasn't often that i felt like breaking the quiet air with that kind of sound. sometimes i would sing as i walked around the island, but i was careful not to disturb the resident blue heron, loons, mallard ducklings.... The Woods seems as though it happened a long long time ago, come and gone so quickly, like a flash of lightning, remembered mostly in haunting feelings and already-fading memories. i had coffee with tony yesterday evening; we were the only customers in the Second Cup, and looking over each others' Woods photos, we chatted, and laughed, and we remembered it all over again, together. it helped make it seem 'real' again. jean and i are still wondering why, with all those hours together at The Woods, we never did get that dulcimer duo thing happening like we'd planned. and all those other ideas, plans, possibilities that never hatched.....i guess that's what next year is for. meanwhile, some of us are fortunate to be living near other folkies, so during the year we can go to song circles, jams, and concerts. it's when we're sharing the music with others that the songs and the tunes really sparkle..... ~black walnut
