Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: richardw Date: 22 Aug 00 - 10:12 PM The hymn is sung in the church service at the end of the movie The Perfect Storm. I thnk, if memory serves me right, it is the same tune as Oh God Our Help In Ages Past, or is that the first line?. I can hear it... Richard Wright |
Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: Cobble Date: 22 Aug 00 - 08:49 PM The hymn is called For those in peril on the sea. |
Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: Jeri Date: 22 Aug 00 - 08:11 PM Seamen's Hymn by A. L. Lloyd. No midi there (or on Alan's Mudcat Midi page), but I know the song, although I have no idea of the name of the humn. |
Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: Burke Date: 22 Aug 00 - 08:05 PM I haven't a clue. But it's a variant on 11's. Try the Cyberhymnal's meter index. Your's looks like 11,11,11,12,12,12; but maybe one of the 11,11,11,11,'s or 12,11's with refrain is it. |
Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: GUEST,Hoot & Fidget Date: 22 Aug 00 - 07:58 PM Oh I know the melody. I just wanted to know if there is anyone out there that can think of a Welsh Hymn that is even close to the melody for this. I'm trying to teach a harmony workshop & would rather not have to figure out the harmony on my own. |
Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: Sorcha Date: 22 Aug 00 - 07:54 PM Probably I was wrong, and John is right. Titles are such iffy things............apparently your words are in the Digital Tradition database, but I can't seem to get to them to even see if they have a Click to Play. Sam and his friends (the search engines) act like that sometimes. Go with Johns answer. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE SEAMEN'S HYMN From: GUEST,Hoot & Fidget Date: 22 Aug 00 - 07:44 PM Sorcha; I can't for the life o' me fit the following words to the meter of the poetry on your thread: Come all you brave seamen Wherever you're bound And always let Nelson's Proud memory go round. And pray that the wars And the tumult shall cease For the greatest of gifts Is a sweet lasting peace. May the Lord put an end To these cruel old wars And bring peace and contentment To all our brave tars! |
Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: Sorcha Date: 22 Aug 00 - 07:28 PM This site, here also says it is the same tune/song as Let the Lighthouse be Burning............ |
Subject: RE: Help: The Seamen's Hymn From: John in Brisbane Date: 22 Aug 00 - 07:22 PM Not an area of expertise for me but the ceremonial British Hymn is 'For Those At Sea' sung to the tune of 'Lest We Forget'. Regards, John |
Subject: The Seamen's Hymn From: GUEST,Hoot & Fidget Date: 22 Aug 00 - 06:50 PM I understand that "The Seamen's Hymn" was written by Bert Lloyd for a BBC docudrama and the tune was from a Welsh Hymn. (It wouldn't surprise me if it were Methodist.) Does anyone know the name of the tune? |
