Subject: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... From: GUEST,Michelle Date: 23 Aug 00 - 11:24 AM There's a silly girl scout song I heard once, and can't remember it all. Here's what I remember: The beginning: "Oh, I was born one night one morn When the whistle went toot! toot!" ... "...Was Old Black Joe an Eskimo In the good old summertime? Oh, if Easter eggs don't was their legs Their children will be ducks..." "...It's in a tree, beneath the sea Above the bright blue sky. Way down in Barcelon-ia I jumped into the foam-ia Now this is all balogn-ia When Dinah blows her horn-- toot! toot!" Can anyone help? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... From: Barbara Date: 27 Sep 02 - 03:15 AM Y'know, I learned this song at a Girl Scout Camp someplace in SE Michigan, I don't think it was Sherwood, but it might have been. It would have been, oh, about 40, 45 years ago, and I remember the line as "if Easter eggs don't shave their legs? as well. I have the idea the tune might come from some piece of pop classical music: light italian opera or JP Sousa, or some such. Blessings, Barbara |

Old Black Joe was an Eskimo Pork comes from a porcupine A pig or cow can bark "meow" and the Sandman loves to sing I saw a frog swim up a log But he fell and broke his wing (some other lyrics that I've forgotten) Paderuski blow your nose! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... From: GUEST,Mikey G Date: 02 Jun 04 - 12:19 PM I just found the title of the song: The Lunatic's Lullaby 1926 Music & Lyrics by: Leslie Moore, Johnny Tucker & Edgar Leslie possibly performed by Paul Ash |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Jun 04 - 05:00 AM As we say here in California nowadays, "That's Fantastic," Mikey. This Songwriter Listing gives Edgar Leslie songwriter credit for "Lunatic's Lullaby." Edgar Leslie also wrote "Among My Souvenirs" and "For Me and My Gal." "Lullaby" made the Parlorsongs Magazine August 1998 issue, with this frustratingly brief lyrics excerpt at the magazine's Website:
and the whistles rang boom-boom I boil a cake and drink a steak when the mud pies are in bloom. Can anybody find full lyrics for the original song? -Joe Offer- |

(Lunatic's Lullaby) From: GUEST,The Connor Girls Date: 07 Aug 04 - 10:07 PM Here's the song we learned 35 years ago and passed along to our children: I was born one night one morn when the whistle went "toot toot." You can buy a plane or fly a train when the mud pies are in bloom. Does six and six make nine? Does ice grow on a vine? Is Old Black Joe an Eskimo in the good old summertime? Oh, loop-de-loop in the noodle soup just to give your socks a shine. I'm guilty, judge; I ate the fudge. Three cheers for old lang syne! I cannot tell a lie. I hocked the apple pie. It's on a tree, beneath the sea, above the bright blue sky. Oh, Easter eggs don't wash their legs. Their children will have ducks. (Quack, quack!) I'd rather buy a lemon pie for forty-seven bucks. Way down in Barcelonia, they jumped into the foamia, And this is all bolognia. Paderewski, blow your horn. (Toot, toot!) This is our most favorite family torture song. |

Subject: Lyr Add: LUNATIC'S LULLABY (Moore/Tucker/Leslie) From: GUEST,Rick@parlorsongs.com Date: 03 Oct 04 - 02:31 PM Interesting Thread. Here is the first verse and Chorus from the original sheetmusic published in 1926. This would represent the authoritative lyrics that probably spawned some of the variations listed here and elsewhere. If I have time I'll did out the sheet music and provide the second verse and second chorus. The above link was to a first exposition of the song on our site, we reissued it with an article about novelty songs in October, 1999: ========================== THE LUNATIC'S LULLABY Music & Lyrics by: Leslie Moore, Johnny Tucker & Edgar Leslie Cover artist: Barbelle Published 1926 by Edgar Leslie, Inc. (four bar introduction, 4 bar vamp) I'm up here in the bug house. My brain is in a rut. My keeper says I'm crazy, but he is off his nut. I'm just as sane as you are, and I can prove it too: For when you hear my lullaby, you'll know I'm not cuckoo. CHORUS: Oh! I was born at night one morn and the whistles rang boom boom. I boil a cake and drink a steak when the mud pies are in bloom. If six and six are nine, does ice come from a mine? Then old Black Joe's an Eskimo, and pork's from porcupine. A pig or cow can bark meow but a goldfish likes to sing. I saw a frog swim up a log, but he fell and broke his wing. I know that camels sail the sea, that we get honey from a flea, That ev'ry horse can climb a tree on the road to Mandalay. CHORUS Oh! me Oh! my, That's the Lunatic's Lullaby! ============================= Regards; Rick |

I learned this song at a church camp way back in, let's see now...... 1967 or '68. And I've never forgotten them. Wow. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... (Lunatic's Lullaby) From: GUEST,Heather Whann Choplin Date: 19 Feb 05 - 10:39 PM I can't believe this song is remembered by anyone other than me! My version combines several of the ones from above but we always called it "Jeep". I think it was given that title along the way because it made no sense, just like the song. I learned it at a Camp Fire Girls' Camp called Camp Hidden Valley in Madonna, Maryland back in the 1970s. I think it was one of our all time favorite songs to sing at night, in the woods, around the canmpfire. This inspires me to search for more of those silly, obscure camp songs from my youth. Thanks! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... (Lunatic's Lullaby) From: GUEST,lorble@comcast.net Date: 22 Mar 05 - 02:25 PM This song has rattled around my head since Gril Scout Camp in the late 70s. I have been singing the portion I remember to my daughter lately, and she loves it...she'll say "sing the loopy noodle song mom!" I'm not as goofy as I thought considering many others recall it too! I've seen it referred to as "The Nonsense Song", "The Crazy Song" and "Jeep Song" Thanks much! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... (Lunatic's Lullaby) From: GUEST,Karen Date: 29 Apr 05 - 06:30 AM Wow...the versions...a few things I had different: "I baked a steak and fried a cake when the mud pies were in bloom." "I'm guilty judge, I stole the fudge, 3 cheers for old lang syne. I cannot tell a lie, I hocked a case of rye..." "If Easter hens don't lay their eggs, their children will be ducks" "My friends call me Napoleon..." verse, but with "...I come from Minnesota...way down near old Saint Paul" I had never heard of the "pig or cow can bark meow" verse. We did this in Girl Scouts in Southeastern Missouri back in the mid-1960's. I couldn't piece it all together and had forgotten the end, so whenever it came into my head, it just kept going and going....Thanks for giving me some closure! Karen From St. Charles, MO |

I leared this song, or a variation of it, in Girl Scout camp in the early 80's. It's been rattling around in my head for years without completion. I kept leaving out bits of it and it would drive me bonkers! Thanks for the lyrics. I have a little girl of my own now and am anxious to teach it to her. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... (Lunatic's Lullaby) From: GUEST,guest Date: 29 Jul 05 - 03:16 PM My brother taught me this song in the 70's. I tought it to my best friend and we had competitions to see who could sing it faster. Now I'm impressing my 3 year old with my fast singing skills. The version I remembered (at least before I read all the variations today) had the last verse: If easter eggs don't shave their legs, their children will have ducks (quack quack) I'd rather buy a lemon pie for forty-seven bucks (too much) Way down in Barcelonia, they fell into a ponia, but that is all Bolognia so rooster blow your horn - toot! toot! BTW, I found this thread because I mentioned to that same best friend (still friends after 35 years) that I was teaching the song to my daughter, she asked me for the lyrics, and I googled because I was too lazy to type them in. I didn't really expect to find the lyrics, much less a whole discussion. |

(Lunatic's Lullaby) From: GUEST,Claude d'Estree Date: 25 Aug 05 - 05:01 PM Here's the version I learned from my late mother-in-law, who was born in 1902 and who was professional dancer and part of the "scene" in New York in the '20's and '30's I presume that "Paderewski" refers to Ignace Jan Paderewski, the Polish composer, pianist and diplomat. I have started teaching it to my sons, ages 9, 6 & 5 I plan on taking all the best lyrics from above that aren't in my version and add them to mine, so as to create an even longer, crazier "Lunatic's Lullaby." My boys will love it! ************* LUNATIC'S LULLABY Oh, I was born one night one morn' When the whistle went "boom, boom." I can fry a cake, I can bake a steak, When the mudpies are in bloom. If six and six is nine And ice comes from a mine, Then ol' Black Joe's an Eskimo "In the Good Old Summer Time." Oh, loop-the-loop In the noodle soup Just to give my socks a shine I'm a guilty judge, I stole some fudge. Three cheers for Auld Lang Sine I cannot tell a lie. I hocked a case of rye It on a branch Beneath the sea Above the bright, blue sky If Easter eggs could wash their legs And children could have ducks I'd rather have a lemon pie Than forty-seven bucks Way down in Barcelonia They spit into the phonia And that ain't no balonia.
