But uncovering another person's faults won't cover up your own. So the next time you're tempted to point a faultfinding finger, why not hold out a helping hand? That helping hand may be like a switch on a railroad track - an inch between tragedy and triumph.

I sometimes get the feeling that some people read messages in the hope of finding a reason to get upset.

I worked with someone once who was a horrible boss. He had been treated badly during is career, and was "taking it out" on those he now had authority over. Some would have gone the other way, and would have understood what it felt like, and been more compassionate. The smart ones are those who see they're becoming what they most hate, and refuse to allow it.

Random acts of kindness including smiles in strange places do wonders for people. And NEVER pass a woman with a baby without commenting on how beautiful it is. You never know where it may lead - people may actually end up liking each other. Thanks for the thought Sandy Toes.

And Spaw Is Cletus so attached to that sheep that he has no interest in a college girl? What is his problem?

Okay, the antics of Cleetus, Paw and the Reg brothers just cost me another keyboard...and Fiona was on the point of calling an ambulance.....Uncle Pat, I hate to say this but I think I may be falling for Cleetus.....I'm a sucker for a man who can make me laugh and this guy has been responsible for most of my hysterics for months now....any chance of talking him into coming to the UK...once he's finished raking in the money from the Great Falwell Garage Miracle of course ( I'm not entirely stupid)?

Not to be proselytizing here (whatever that word is), just a culture point of interest. Back in the old country, if someone remarked how beautiful your baby was, but didn't say "God bless" them (no matter what the religion) that meant they had put the Evil Eye on the baby. My Mom's Armenian/Jewish neighbor said that's why her baby sister died. Hee hee good thing us Italians invented the maloikies! Anyway, the music:

It's funny, y'know. In the allegedly fast-paced world of today, a lot of people leave their manners at home when they go out, but can be reminded of them by example. In the hardware store I work at, a lot of people show up just rushed and annoyed that I can't offer them instant gratification by first, instantly understanding what they're talking about ("it's this, y'know, the thing that goes in the other thing, the metal thing") and then pulling exactly what they need out of my pocket. But I just try to be patient and inquisitive, figure out what they're doing and what they need, and help them find it. Even if we can't find it, by the time we're done looking they almost always have turned polite and thank me for trying.

Of course, it could be a Canadian thing. (Every time I go around a corner with a loaded stock cart and accidentally run into an unwary customer from behind, they always say "I'm sorry".)

My other thought today is for my old friend Cutter, the smartest and most wonderful cat I've ever known. He died a few hours ago at the ripe old age of 20. He's been with me longer than Karen! Of all the animals I've known, he's the only one I really wished could talk ala Dr. Doolittle. From an early age, he knew how to do all kinds of things....opening doors and cabinets and windows and such. But he always remained proud to be a cat.

When Karen and I would sit and have serious discussions, he would come and sit between us and listen.....it was as though he were the "Animal Representative" at the meeting. When we played games or cards, he had to be involved. We even started calling the table leaf we would put up for him the "Cutter Flap." He had a great facial expression for showing his displeasure at things.....mouth slightly open and lips curled back in a face that said, "Faah."

He was always my boy, but he was also the ultimate ladies man. Any woman who came to the house got the full treatment and his favorite women, Karen and Katy, used to be treated to a floor-to-shoulder leap when he was younger. Too many stories over the 20 years since I found him on the side of the road as a tiny kitten in Nashville.

Now he's buried out beside his best pal Luff......another remarkable cat. I have a great picture (also turned into a painting by a friend) of the two of them, both lying side by side with Cutty's front paw around Luffy's shoulders. They were quite a pair, Luff the long and lanky red point Siamese, and Cutter, the black alley cat.

So now we go on as usual. But it won't be quite the same. It never is.

Oh my. Sorry about your Cutter. Sounds like 20 great years for a pussycat and his pal. Jim, my buddycat, is showing signs of his age. They go too soon and take a piece of our hearts when they do. All best pal.

Spaw, your saying that you wished Cutter could talk made me remember- there were many times I literally forgot the cat/dog had not spoken! And then I would realize all over again that communication is not necessarily verbal. Congratulations on having had Cutter and Luff so long.

Oh, Spaw, I am so sorry about Cutter. Glad he was able to go there, at home, with you, but dammit it is still so hard when they do go. I read something in that silly music...for real...thread, in the link...it was a memoriam for a musician and they said their hearts were still raining sideways...that sure sounds like what my heart does when I lose an old fur-friend. Raining sideways here for you and the family and wonderful old Cutter and Luff.

Spaw, my deepest sympathies for you and your family. I know you will miss Cutter greatly. It's amazing what a large hole they leave in our lives when they go. At least now he's reunited with Luff.

How did he get the name Cutter? Sounds as if he was your perfect feline match. I am sorry he is gone. Remember the good times.

Hi Sins....All of my cats used to have names related to sailing.......Cutter is a type of rig and especially appropriate for a cat; Luff is the leading edge of a sail and if trimisn't perfect it flaps noisily....and if things weren't perfect, Luffy was VERY noisy! there was also Alcyon, Hobie, Catalina, Morgan.........

Except for Cutter they all died reasonably young. But Luff was always Cutter's special friend and when Luff died, a part of Cutter died too......He was never quite the same.
