I've been having trouble with Hearme for some time now, and, after numerous calls for help, but they dont respond. I have given up on their "help" staff. I dumped the whole thing, reloaded it from scratch, and still, when the box comes up I hit the talk button, and it pops right up again. I go to audio configuration, hit the red button and get this note..ERROR512PLAYtoNET. surely one of you computer literate types has a suggestion?

kendell - hearme isn't really a seperate program, so you wouldn't get an icon for it, it sort of grafts itself onto your internet browser (whatever that is)

I haven't had any problems with it that were not connection related, so I can't really help you troubleshoot, but Jon Freeman may be along shortly...

Kendall,
Jon will know what to do. Meantime have you tried going into an old Hearme thread and clicking into Hearme? Your name will come up in the box. Choose Options and you can try to record and play yourself back there. (Please Spaw - NO).

I have tried to save Hearme in my favorites box but it's not the right site. I am always alone. Great for practice and private personal chats but not much else.

huh! I almost ALWAYS go into HearMe from my favorites list.

but you have to mark it from the main page, not the active room...in other words, from the page that says "click hear to...."

Tip: be sure to use Internet Explorer. I could not get hearme to work with Netscape. I have the url as my home page in IE, so when I sign on, I just hit the 'Click Here' button and I'm in. If you are already using IE, then the only answer is to talk to Jon.

Jon does not know what to do but:

Kendall, I suspect that this problem is not down to Hearme. A couple of things to try.

1. Check that you have no other audio programs running.

2. Go into Hearme and press the Talk button. I know it only stays down for a second but note any messages that may appear below the button while it is down. e.g. an error message that I am aware of is "Recording Device in Use".

3. Go into Sound Recorder (in Windows 98, this is located in Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment) and try to record a wav file. Does this work or do you get any error messages?

This is curious. I have tried to force errors on the Audio Configuration and the only 2 I can create are 4 (Recording Device In Use) and 32 (Wav in Open Failure).

I have searched through the dll files related to Hearme and the only instances of the string "PlaytoNet" I can find exist in npevpcgd.dll which is the Plugin for the Audio Configuration and is not used for the normal Hearme. I am surprised that Hearme can not explain what appears to be one of their own Error messages!

Kendall, one other thing you could try is to remove the Audio Configuration Plugin. Assuming you are using IE, make sure no Hearme applications are running and go into Tools/Internet Options, select the General Tab, Click the Settings.. button, and then click View Objects.. Select "Hearme Microphone Configuration Wizard", Right Click and select Remove. The next time you go into Audio Configuration, the plug in should download itslef from Hearme again.

Also, can you confirm what browser you are using, that you only have Hearme installed on one browser and that you have no other Hearme products such as Hearme Voice contact on your system.

(Hearme don't document this in their FAQ but each of these programs uses the same Dll's and as an example, if you had Hearme installed on IE and then switched to using Netscape, NetScape would download the required files and the IE Plugin will be marked as Not Installed. Hearme will still work under IE as the references to the required dll's are now the Netscape set and similarly uninstalling the IE plug in does not work for the same reason... It can become very messy!!!)

I used to access Jon's site using Netscape. Then one day I couldnt successfully get on, and found that I could in IE, which I hate with a passion.

Recently, for other reasons, I deleted Netscape entirely and then reinstalled it. Now I can access the current HearMe session. go figure.

I had this hearme thing, but, about a month ago a friend came by and dumped my cookie jar. He said it would free up some junk filled space. Maybe that did it?

ICQ works fine. How can I dump hearme and be sure to get all of it (like a cancer) so I can start all over?

Dave, this is a guess but as far as I can make out, the Netscape problem lies with their "Smart Update". I removed it once using that and there was nothing I could do to persude Netscape that it needed the plugin agian. It just gave me a blank page.

Kendall, you still haven't told me what browser you are using, whether you have used hearme on more than one browser and whether you have installed anything like Voice Contact or other Hearme product. All these details will effect the steps you need to take to remove it completely.

I use Netscape exclusively and never have problems with HearMe...(I do NOT use smart update)....and I do have a desktop icon which is just the address

http://www.geocities.com/anneuicocaire/hearme.html ...made into a shortcut and named 'HearMe'

I suspect Kendall's problem is in his audio setup....

OK Kendall,

Follow the steps I gave you to remove the Audio Configuration and while you are viewing the objects, also select anything else that says Hearme (you should have either Voice Presence or Voice Creator) and repeat the right click/ remove so everything related to Hearme is gone and close the boxes and explorer.

Then and be VERY careful here, Open a program in your Windows directory called RegEdit.Exe and:

In the "Registry Editor" window, click the + (plus sign) button next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and then next to "SOFTWARE"

Select the folder labeled "HearMe"
Select "Edit | Delete" from the menu
Click "Yes" to confirm deletion of the key
Close the the "Registry Editor" window. (Your changes are saved automatically)

Then try to go into hearme. You should be prompted to accept the licence agreement and the plugin should download giving you a fresh start.

Yes, Bill that was my initial thought and I suggested some checks for Kendall to make that should indicate if the problem lies there. The other problem with the sound set up I have is that I can't re-create the error on mine (tying up the resources produces the expected device in use errors and disabling my soundcard - produces the expected can't open Wav device errors) but I can not simulate a corrupt driver file that may produce an unexpected error.

Try this, Kendall

Go to Start/Run... and key in RegEdit and click on OK.

I must repeat that you need to be very carefull with this program and only do exactly what I have said. It is the only way I know of to clear this entry (and this is the method Hearme gives - I pasted the instructions in from thier site) but mistakes made while editing the registry can make your PC unusable.

Just another thought Kendall, I had stuck with this thread incase anyone else had any suggestions of things to try but as the thread is starting to get long, it may be better to go to ICQ. I will be on for a while yet.

I found one reference (in German!) about error512 and 'playtonet' translated, it said something about other having the same problem....

"Hallo Frank, beim Versuch, den Voicechat auch auf meinem Notebook einzurichten, stosse ich auf Probleme. Das Plugin wird installiert. Man kann sich auch im Sprechzimmer anmelden. Aber F9 bewirkt nichts. Die anderen registrieren in der Teilnehmerliste nicht einmal, dass ein "Neuer" dazugekommen ist. Unten steht "press f9 to talk". Drueckt man F9, muesste diese Zeile ja dann umspringen. Das geht nicht. Auch hoert man die anderen nicht sprechen. Gehe ich dann auf "Audiokonfiguration" und druecke F9, um mich selbst zu hoeren, erhalte ich die Fehlermeldung:

"error recording from the microfone. 512 playtonet. Please reboot your system and try again."

Von Michael habe ich erfahren, dass auch einige andere dieses Problem haben. Auf manchen Rechnern bzw. bei manchen Konstellationen scheint es Probleme zu geben.

not much help, huh?

Thanks Bill, I have just tried a search and all I have managed to come up with is that and another guy who has the same unsolved mystery.

I'm glad I'm not the only one stuck!
