Subject: Positive songs for Mbo From: celticblues5 Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:04 PM Since Mbo has taken us to task several times lately for our curmudgeonly ways (ie - songs we hate, etc.), I thought we should have a thread of positive songs to soothe his kind, young heart. :-) You are only allowed to say, "Yes! I love that song too!" in response to postings on this thread. Those feeling the urge to hurl at the mention of a particular song should post those comments on one of the already-started "worst song" threads. Three basic categories occur to me at the moment - 1) Songs that uplift you every time you hear them. A couple of songs that I would include here are "Forever Young" and the Moody Blues' "Vintage Wine" (and if anyone has the chords for VW, I'd appreciate them being posted). 2) Songs that are not positive in the sense of happy-happy-joy-joy, but which convey the necessity of caring for each other. Example - "There Were Roses." 3) Songs that are not necessarily happy, but that feel SO GOOD to play or sing that they always give you a sensual thrill. A lot of blues songs come under this category for me - with the way you can slide your voice around the notes. "Wild Women Don't Have the Blues," "Perfect Stranger." All right, have at it! |

Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Rollo Date: 24 Aug 00 - 06:59 PM the balfa brothers playing "Les flemmes d'enfer" is one of my all-time favorites. whenever I am depressed and listen to this cajun stuff the Balfas shove some peppers up my a** and make me dance in the chair. no chance of staying depressed when someone drowns his sorrows in a good portion of cajun-fiddling. |

Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Lox Date: 24 Aug 00 - 10:28 PM The original version of "It must be love" by Labi Siffre. It's sickly sweet but irresistable. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Aug 00 - 10:34 PM Spaw - I can understand someone having to fart...but wanting to? Say what? How about "Whiter Shade of Pale"? There's something quite majestic about that one. "Pack Up Your Sorrows" by Richard Farina is a great song. "Jokerman" by Dylan is a killer. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Aug 00 - 10:35 PM Oh, and it's EM-BO, for cryin' out loud, not Mee-Bo! EM-Bo. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Jim the Bart Date: 24 Aug 00 - 10:41 PM Little Hawk - Yes, yes, yes on Jokerman. Also: Philosopher Stone by Van Morrison Only you Know and I Know by Delaney and Bonnie Old Love by Neal & Leandra (on a compilation called House on Fire, from Red House The Poet Game by Greg Brown (same compilation) I could go on |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Troll Date: 24 Aug 00 - 10:53 PM Almost anything by Gilbert and Sullivan. troll it could also be M'Beau, Little Hawk |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Chicky Date: 24 Aug 00 - 11:08 PM Prince of Darkness - Indigo Girls From the title, it doesn't sound like a very uplifting song, but (to me) it's about refusing to stay stuck in destructive situations. About 10 years ago I listened to it for three days straight until I had the courage to leave my ex.
Cheers |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: rabbitrunning Date: 24 Aug 00 - 11:10 PM I think its called "Tubthumper" or something like that. The one that was on the radio and had all the little cheerful darling children singing "pissing the night away" in sweet innocent voices. I don't much care about the lyrics if the song gets me dancing! Yeeha! |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Mbo Date: 24 Aug 00 - 11:12 PM Great song, rabbit. "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba. "I get knocked down, but I get up again, you ain't ever gonna keep me down!"

Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Aug 00 - 11:18 PM Well for me LH, its Meebo....like in Zeebo, Peebo, or Dweebo.........works for me. And as far as wanting to fart, a lot of stuff makes me want to fart and fortunately I generally can upon command. But if you want a positive...........Well, How about Bobby Goldsboro and "Honey"...I'm positive its lousy, makes me want to fart, and ranks right up there with "Whiter Shade of Pale." What the hell is that any way, a whiter shade of pale? Must be the color of a cake left out in the rain............... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Mbo Date: 24 Aug 00 - 11:22 PM I'm pretty sure there's nothing you guys can do to cheer me up. |

Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Troll Date: 24 Aug 00 - 11:28 PM Spaw: This ones for you. Guy goes to Japan on business and comes back with a problem. Every time he farts it sounds like "honda". He goes to his doctor who sends him to a specialist in oriental diseases. The Dr. doesn't speak good english but the man finally gets him to understand the problem. "Honda. Honda. Hmmm. I must check book. H.H.H. Ah. Honda. You have abcess." "I have an abcess?" says our hero. "Yes. Say here in book. Abcess make the fart go "honda'" Good night Spaw. troll |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Aug 00 - 11:54 PM Aw geeziz troll....that was bad, and I mean that in the best possible fashion. Now I think the young lad could cheer himself up from those college blues by joining with other students, from Max's alma mater Penn State, in the musicality and BTU value of flatulence. In their archive (Fartchive), I heartily suggest the "Baked Beans." If you like, I have lots of others I could list. A great reason for wanting to fart. BTW, we have an excellent thread on flatulence right here at Mudcat. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Gypsy Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:06 AM Lets see, Shady Grove done quick. Old Joe Clark, which the better half is hammering out on the mando at this moment. Must it be a song? Howabout a tune? Lots of those! Midnight on the Water, Coleraine, and Angeline the Baker. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Oversoul Date: 25 Aug 00 - 01:01 AM Sam McGee's "The Knoxville Blues". Or Robbie Basho's entire album, "The Falconer's Arm Vol.2". One more, Grayson and Whittner's rendition of "Old Jimmy Sutton". Or perhaps a cut off the first Fairport Convention album,(circa '68) "M.1 Breakdown". Maybe John Fahey's "Variations on the CooCoo". And finally, Michael Rabin playing Paganini's "Caprice #24 in A minor" followed by "Caprice #11 in C". These worked for me tonight. But I ain't that negative, yet. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Sorcha Date: 25 Aug 00 - 01:33 AM Somehow, I gather it is not "College Blues", but "Womon Blues". Meebs, my son, you just gotta play the Blues til you get to feelin' better, cause you can't play the blues and stay sad. When you get to feelin' better try "Whiskey Before Breakfast" or "Blackberry Blossoms" on the fiddle. I can't count the times I have sat on the patio playing the "Blooz", and all the sad songs I know, until I just couldn't stand it anymore, and had to play "Whiskey Before...." ( and I call him EmBo, MeeBo, Meebs, Me'bro, M'Bro, and MattyBumpo......I don't think he cares what we call him, as long as we CARE......) Hang in there, Matt honey. It will get better, and you will survive. (NO "Survivor" jokes here, please--was bad enuf in the original)
"John Henry" is a good 'un too. Just feels good to play and sing. Or try some real hard core Gospel--"I Saw the Light", "Keep On the Sunny Side" etc.
If none of that works, try some of the Blues Gospel, like the Doc did--"Faithful Soldier", "I Am A Pilgrim", If all else fails, just try banging the hell out of the guitar with discordant stuff, while you make up lyrics as you go. |
Subject: ADD:Rainy Day People (Lightfoot) From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Aug 00 - 04:33 AM Well, Mbo, maybe this will inspire you. I suppose iut's horribly easy-listening, but I really like it. -Joe Offer- Rainy Day People (Gordon Lightfoot) Rainy day people always seem to know when it's time to call. Rainy day people don't talk they just listen till they've heard it all. Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you they've been down like you. Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin' a tear or two. If you get lonely, all you really need is that rainy day love Rainy day people all know there's no sorrow they can't rise above Rainy day lovers don't love any others, that would not be kind Rainy day people all know how it hangs on a piece of mind Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you, they've been down there too Rainy day people don't mind if you're crying a tear or two Rainy day people always seem to know when you're feeling blue High stepping strutters who land in the gutter sometimes need one too Take it or leave it, or try to believe it, if you've been down too long Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on jro |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Catrin Date: 25 Aug 00 - 05:55 AM Van Morrison - Moondance
Peggy Seeger singing that one about the mother and daughter - can't remember what it's called but it starts 'My mother was exotic, she was like a gypsy queen..' - I've just remembered what it was called ...'Different Tunes'
What about Ry Cooder singing 'School is Out' - NOT the Alice Cooper one! It goes something like
School is out at last Well, so I can't quite remember the words, but I listened to that one a lot when I finished at Uni (aged 34)... |

Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: sian, west wales Date: 25 Aug 00 - 08:45 AM Maybe he's more in a "Saturday Night in Toledo Ohio" mood? sian |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Whistle Stop Date: 25 Aug 00 - 08:54 AM "People Got To Be Free" by the Rascals. Recently appropriated for some commercial, in a truly awful cover version. But the original was great. "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" (50's doo-wop; don't remember who) "Rise Again" by the Rankins "Summertime Blues" -- either the original by Eddie Cochran, or the cover by the Who; Cochran's "C'mon Everybody" also qualifies "La Bamba" by Richie Valens -- a little shopworn, but still a great one "Oh Boy" by Buddy Holly Actually, there's lots of good, happy stuff to choose from, especially when you dip into 1950's rock and roll. Smile! |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Aug 00 - 08:55 AM Well, it is like being nowhere at all. Ya' know, all through the day, the hours rush by; you sit in the park and watch the grass die. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: LR Mole Date: 25 Aug 00 - 09:52 AM Hm...I think I just hit the wrong button and disappeared.Anyway, I suggest the bluegrass version of Lou Reed's "Berlin". Subject: Lyr Add: Cigarettes and Alcohol^^ From: GUEST,Mbo_at_ECU Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:24 PM I've had this one in my head all day.
Is it my imagination |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: sledge Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:32 PM It suites me well by Sandy Denny, you don't always have to have a lot to have it all. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: SINSULL Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:46 PM Now I'm worried. If all Mbo has left is cigarettes and alcohol, and he doesn't smoke or drink, well???? Molly is looking for a penpal and doesn't leave for Italy until the end of September. She plays guitar and piano - I was saving that. She also sings in a school chorus and some local groups. Also acts - played the Spartan virgin in Lysistrata among other things. Mbo, snap out of your funk and I will give you an address. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Mbo Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:49 PM Oy, I played the Magistrate and various Spartan messengers and bard in the dramatic reading we did. Man I hate that play, or at least the translation we had. Hope this doesn't ruin my chances. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:49 PM My God, Spaw, I looked up that site you posted. How tasteless! How offensive! How vile! I've put it on my list of favourites. |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: DougR Date: 25 Aug 00 - 01:09 PM Satchmo singing, "What a Wonderful World," and "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover," by Art Mooney. Though these are a bit ancient for MBO. DougR |
Subject: RE: Positive songs for Mbo From: hesperis Date: 25 Aug 00 - 01:14 PM "What A Wonderful World" - In Satchmo's best honey-growl "Georgy Girl" - one of my total favorites. It was my theme song in high school, back when I was a mousy, quiet brainiac with no friends. A lot can happen in 5 years, eh? "The 59th Street Bridge Song" - or anything else by Simon & Garfunkel "Running from the Shadows (Cast by the Light of Love)" - one of my mother's best. Also the "Moon Trilogy" Also... I like her stuff, ok? "Porgy and Bess Suite" - played by the Boss Brass. "Contrapunctus 1" - JS Bach, performed by the Canadian Brass. Never fails to calm me when I'm hectic... Also the lovely horn solo "Cor Royale" Oh, am I supposed to stick to songs? "The Power of Love" Anything by the Beatles. Favorites are When I'm 64, With A Little Help From My Friends, I want to hold your hand. "San Francisco" - Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair... "Dancin' in the street" - Yeah! Barbara's Chakra Dance - music is Yulduz Usmanova, I think. Can't quite read the hen-scratch notes for this dance, don't know the title. (Circle dances tend to go by the title of the dance.) This music is fantastic!!!! "Tower of Strength" - I think it's by a band called the Mission, but I lost the track notes my friend gave me along with the mix tape. The Native songs George brought in to Song Circle. Those were really magical. All Sophy's celtic ballads. If I want to be miserable and enjoy myself with it, "The Highwayman" performed by Loreena McKennitt. I never fail to cry. "The House of the Rising Sun" - If I need to really wail, this is the perfect song for it. "Solitaire" - Deep Purple. Also, "Anya" Oh, a few more more, even though they're instrumental: "Saltarello" by Dead Can Dance. "Savage" - flamenco guitar and cuban? drumming. By Daniel Cox, on mp3.com. I have a lot of favorites. Anything done by Enya. Ever. Favorite one is "Lothlorien" on the Shepherd Moons album. I could keep going... ~*sirepseh*~ D'ya feel any better now, Mbo? |
