Aw, spaw, I don't feel put down.
But was that a smile I saw on your face when you thought of yourself as "beaten, submissive ... ?"

BTW, if GutBucketeer hadn't posted they lyrics to Jug Band Music, I would probably have started a new thread. (I could have sworn I looked for them in the forum and DT search!)

Ah Sins......I wasn't kicking up no fuss. I just know that the best way to get lyrics is to start a thread with Lyr,Req. and the name of the song in the title. But if you feel like I was putting the poor girl down, then I'm gonna' have to apologize........

Sorry Genie.

Poor Genie. Damned if you do and damned if you don't! Create a new thread and get sent to an old; revive an old and get told to start a new. And by Spaw, no less.
It was good to see Mbo back or Matt_R.
Suggestion - go to the Radio Episode Archives and pull up the night with Bill Sables, Ian S. and Sam P. It will make you feel better. Or try the night AllanC and Bill Sables finished up the Great Adventure in Mudcatville. Happy people/ simpler times.

Thanks, spaw and roger,

Sometimes the google thing works or I can find lyrics at lyrics world, etc., but I've struck out on this song. And sometimes, google searches produce everything that contains a trace of what I entered --e.g, everything that has the word "people" or the word "free" in it.
PS, I know the thread is old, but the thought and purpose behind it are not--namely, thinking of songs to lift a sagging spirit.

genie, Roger is quite right, but in this case and since I doubt that we have any intention of adding this one to the DT, Click Here For Lyrics.

A lot of pop lyrics are available easily on the net by simply entering a phrase (accurately) into a search engine such as Google.

Genie it might be better to make a new thread to request the lyrics you want.
Otherwise the people who may be able to help will see this thread title and may ignore the thread altogether
I think Mbo has had a name change since this thread started anyway and the context of the thread has long since past

Well, Mbo, you do have friends. Here at Mudcat anyway.
And I'm not a mousy person anymore, or I wouldn't be hanging around with Little Hawk! He'd eat me.

Have you heard of power animals?
They can make really good friends for when you feel you don't have anyone to care...

The one we did was translated as overtly rauchy. A movie version probably would have scored a NC-17 rating. The language and graphic descriptions were really over the top. Even our vetern Drama teacher was skipping lines because he didn't agree with the gratuitousness of it. The one redeeming feature of it, was that the version had the Athenians portrayed as English, while the Spartans were Scots. All the Spartans' lines were written in Broad Scots, which is why I took all the minor Spartan parts, cause I was so much fun to read. And it was all Spartan patriotism stuff, an awesome break from the smut. Every one admitted it I hadn't read those parts (doing the right accent too) they wouldn't have understood a thing I was saying. One guy wanted to know if I had been brought up in Scotland (!) Another neat thing was that there are several pariotic Spartan odes at the end of the play that the translators had chosen to arrange to the tunes of popular Scottish folk songs, like Blue Bonnets Over the Border, Scotland The Brave, and Scots Wha Hae. I actually sang those. HA HA no one was expecting that! Fag an Bealach!

Lysistrata is FARCE Mbo. It is supposed to be "over the top" earthy and gross. It's a wonder you hated it if you didn't know that going on. I give up.

Mbo! A spark of interest! Good. See the light at the end of the tunnel?
Re: Lysistrata. I read it in the original and it was hysterical. Mt. Holyoke updated it with some really funny results. EG: The messenger came in dressed as a FEDEX man complete with sign in board and a wad of gum. The highlight of the evening was the appearance of the whore, played by a professor from the Art Department who also teaches exotic dancing. She did not have on a stitch of clothes and was pierced and shaved. The phallic scene looked like "Pigs in Space" - shiny, glittery...Anything but tasteful but that was the point - no?

Actually I had a hard time holding my brother down during the "gourd ritual" scene. His little girl looked to him to be having too much fun.

Did you ever see that dreadful cowboy musical done in the 40s based on "Lysistrata"? All I can remember is a chorus of gingham clad Annie Oakleys screaming "Lysistraaaaaata, Lysistraaaaaaata" at the tops of their lungs. Smiling now?

"What A Wonderful World" - In Satchmo's best honey-growl
"Georgy Girl" - one of my total favorites. It was my theme song in high school, back when I was a mousy, quiet brainiac with no friends. A lot can happen in 5 years, eh?
"The 59th Street Bridge Song" - or anything else by Simon & Garfunkel
"Running from the Shadows (Cast by the Light of Love)" - one of my mother's best. Also the "Moon Trilogy" Also... I like her stuff, ok?
"Porgy and Bess Suite" - played by the Boss Brass.
"Contrapunctus 1" - JS Bach, performed by the Canadian Brass. Never fails to calm me when I'm hectic... Also the lovely horn solo "Cor Royale"
Oh, am I supposed to stick to songs?
"The Power of Love"
Anything by the Beatles. Favorites are When I'm 64, With A Little Help From My Friends, I want to hold your hand.
"San Francisco" - Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair...
"Dancin' in the street" - Yeah!
Barbara's Chakra Dance - music is Yulduz Usmanova, I think. Can't quite read the hen-scratch notes for this dance, don't know the title. (Circle dances tend to go by the title of the dance.) This music is fantastic!!!!
"Tower of Strength" - I think it's by a band called the Mission, but I lost the track notes my friend gave me along with the mix tape.
The Native songs George brought in to Song Circle. Those were really magical.
All Sophy's celtic ballads.
If I want to be miserable and enjoy myself with it, "The Highwayman" performed by Loreena McKennitt. I never fail to cry.
"The House of the Rising Sun" - If I need to really wail, this is the perfect song for it.
"Solitaire" - Deep Purple. Also, "Anya"
Oh, a few more more, even though they're instrumental:
"Saltarello" by Dead Can Dance.
"Savage" - flamenco guitar and cuban? drumming. By Daniel Cox, on mp3.com.

I have a lot of favorites.

Anything done by Enya. Ever. Favorite one is "Lothlorien" on the Shepherd Moons album.

I could keep going...

~*sirepseh*~
D'ya feel any better now, Mbo?

Now I'm worried. If all Mbo has left is cigarettes and alcohol, and he doesn't smoke or drink, well???? Molly is looking for a penpal and doesn't leave for Italy until the end of September. She plays guitar and piano - I was saving that. She also sings in a school chorus and some local groups. Also acts - played the Spartan virgin in Lysistrata among other things. Mbo, snap out of your funk and I will give you an address.

I've had this one in my head all day.

Is it my imagination
Or have I finally found something worth living for?
I was looking for some action
But all I found was cigarettes and alcohol

You could wait for a lifetime
To spend your days in the sunshine
You might as well do the white line
Cos when it comes on top . . .
You gotta make it happen!
You gotta make it happen!

Is it worth the aggravation
To find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for?
It's a crazy situation
But all I need are cigarettes and alcohol!

You could wait for a lifetime
To spend your days in the sunshine
You might as well do the white line
Cos when it comes on top . . .
You gotta make it happen!
You gotta make it happen!

"People Got To Be Free" by the Rascals. Recently appropriated for some commercial, in a truly awful cover version. But the original was great.

"Pretty Little Angel Eyes" (50's doo-wop; don't remember who)

"Rise Again" by the Rankins

"Summertime Blues" -- either the original by Eddie Cochran, or the cover by the Who; Cochran's "C'mon Everybody" also qualifies

"La Bamba" by Richie Valens -- a little shopworn, but still a great one

"Oh Boy" by Buddy Holly

Actually, there's lots of good, happy stuff to choose from, especially when you dip into 1950's rock and roll. Smile!

Van Morrison - Moondance

Peggy Seeger singing that one about the mother and daughter - can't remember what it's called but it starts 'My mother was exotic, she was like a gypsy queen..' - I've just remembered what it was called ...'Different Tunes'

What about Ry Cooder singing 'School is Out' - NOT the Alice Cooper one! It goes something like

School is out at last
I'm so glad I passed
Something something dum-di-dum
Something something else

Well, so I can't quite remember the words, but I listened to that one a lot when I finished at Uni (aged 34)...

Well, Mbo, maybe this will inspire you. I suppose iut's horribly easy-listening, but I really like it.
-Joe Offer-

Rainy Day People
(Gordon Lightfoot)

Rainy day people always seem to know when it's time to call.
Rainy day people don't talk
they just listen till they've heard it all.
Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you
they've been down like you.
Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin' a tear or two.

If you get lonely, all you really need is that rainy day love
Rainy day people all know there's no sorrow they can't rise above
Rainy day lovers don't love any others, that would not be kind
Rainy day people all know how it hangs on a piece of mind

Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you, they've been down there too
Rainy day people don't mind if you're crying a tear or two

Rainy day people always seem to know when you're feeling blue
High stepping strutters who land in the gutter sometimes need one too
Take it or leave it, or try to believe it, if you've been down too long
Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on
Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on

Somehow, I gather it is not "College Blues", but "Womon Blues". Meebs, my son, you just gotta play the Blues til you get to feelin' better, cause you can't play the blues and stay sad. When you get to feelin' better try "Whiskey Before Breakfast" or "Blackberry Blossoms" on the fiddle. I can't count the times I have sat on the patio playing the "Blooz", and all the sad songs I know, until I just couldn't stand it anymore, and had to play "Whiskey Before...." ( and I call him EmBo, MeeBo, Meebs, Me'bro, M'Bro, and MattyBumpo......I don't think he cares what we call him, as long as we CARE......) Hang in there, Matt honey. It will get better, and you will survive. (NO "Survivor" jokes here, please--was bad enuf in the original)

"John Henry" is a good 'un too. Just feels good to play and sing. Or try some real hard core Gospel--"I Saw the Light", "Keep On the Sunny Side" etc.

If none of that works, try some of the Blues Gospel, like the Doc did--"Faithful Soldier", "I Am A Pilgrim",

If all else fails, just try banging the hell out of the guitar with discordant stuff, while you make up lyrics as you go.

Sam McGee's "The Knoxville Blues". Or Robbie Basho's entire album, "The Falconer's Arm Vol.2". One more, Grayson and Whittner's rendition of "Old Jimmy Sutton". Or perhaps a cut off the first Fairport Convention album,(circa '68) "M.1 Breakdown". Maybe John Fahey's "Variations on the CooCoo". And finally, Michael Rabin playing Paganini's "Caprice #24 in A minor" followed by "Caprice #11 in C". These worked for me tonight. But I ain't that negative, yet.

In their archive (Fartchive), I heartily suggest the "Baked Beans."

From the title, it doesn't sound like a very uplifting song, but (to me) it's about refusing to stay stuck in destructive situations. About 10 years ago I listened to it for three days straight until I had the courage to leave my ex.
