Yes, I did see it Q, and you are welcome. Do you have either Star Spangled Molly or Mist Covered Mountain albums by De Dannan? I don't have either of those......(hint)De Dannan does a killer version of Turkey in the Straw, on Song for Ireland. Is that what inspired you? I've been trying for years to play it like that. Unfortunately, I learned it Hoe down/Old Time style first, and it has been really hard to change. Course, I will never sound like Frankie anyway.

Sheet music for it, and the one verse song, of 1899, are in The Levy sheet music collection (Mudcat's Links).

Bruce, maybe you can tell me--it's also in the Miles Krassen (ed) re print of O'Neills Music of Ireland. Was it an Irish reel first, and "appropriated", or was it actually written in the US?

My music reading is useless but is the version in the Levy collection really the same tune as the tune that as Sorcha has mentioned is in O'Neils?

It is the first time I have visited the Levy site. It looks to be quite a fantastic resource. Here is a link: http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/index.html.

Sorcha. A tune "Turkies in the Straw" is in O'Neill's 'Music of Ireland', #1520. I haven't checked to see if it's the same tune. Krassen's edition I don't have, and don't want. It's not a reprint, it's been edited. The former Collins reprint is now published by Mel Bay (with a big boost in price).

Samuel Bayard in 'Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife' 1982, gives 8 versions of the tune that he collected in Pennsylvania, and identifies O'Neill's # 1520 as the same tune. He give references to many other published copies. He came to the conclusion that the tune came from putting together parts of two 18th century Scots tunes "Highway to Edinburgh/ (Bonny) Black Eagle" and "Rose Tree" (earlier, "The Gimblet") (find both from the Scots tune index on my website).

Fogot to add that the tune is also known as "(Old) Zip Coon", and copies in the Levy sheet music collection go back to 1837.

I can't remember what's on my website anymore.

ABCs of "The Gimblet (=Old Lea Rig)" and "Rose Tree" are T024A&B in file T1.HTM on my website. A late 17th century version of "Highway to Edinburgh/ (Bonny) Black Eagle" is in the tunes for Scare Songs 2, file S2.HTM, as WMSNWRK-"Woman's work will never be done".

Yes, I know the Krassen has been edited......but it was all that was available when I bought it. Mostly (mostly?) all he did was fix the key signatures to reflect the mode of the tune.......but he also left out ALL the slow airs, and for that I could pinch him. He did a (blank) poor job with his Appalachian Fiddle tunes, too. Left out measures on lots of tunes in that one.

Thanks for the info on Turkeys........and have you checked in on the Anna Baddley thread? (Bruce, that is)

Thanks Bruce, very interesting. I find the simitarity between the B parts of "Highway to Edinburugh" and Turkey in the Straw" particularly striking.

Sorcha, do you call it edited? I wish I had never bought the book. I can make use of a simple transcription of a tune once I have heard how it goes but he added a lot of ornaments too or at least I think he did. The other copies of O'Niels I have seen have been much simpler.

Sorcha, I know nothing about Anna Baddley, and Steve Roud's folk song index has no "Anna Xyz" that seems to match. Is it really a folk song, or is it a moderately old pop song of Derbyshire?

Bruce, about Anna, I have NO idea, I couldn't find anything. Jon, one of the other "wonderful"(?) things Krassen did was to put Every Possible Ornament in Every Possible Place it could show up.........makes it kinda a booger to sort out the tune base, doesn't it? I ususally use it in conjunction with a recording, so I can HEAR what someone does and just where to do it.
