A new member here, although I've been dropping in and snickering quietly (with appreciation) for months.

I'm looking for the lyrics to a camp song I learned as a child. All I remember is:

Oh, mmm, I want to linger Oh, mmm, a little longer Oh, mmm, a little longer here with you. Oh, mmm, it's such a perfect night, Mmm, it doesn't seem quite right Mmm, this is my very last with you.

I think that was the chorus, and that there were many verses. This was sung by the camp counselors to the little campers on the last day of camp, amid many tears and partings. Anyone remember more of it?

today's the perfect day/ iwant to stay and play/ and have some more fun here with you. I was a camp counseler over the summer. 40 five year old kids singing this in my ear was a bit much.

I think I'd agree with Steve, even though I never heard the song. We had four 2-week sessions every summer, and less than twenty-four hours between sessions. Those hours of silence were few and precious - we sure as heck didn't want those kids to linger, much as we liked them.

this is the way we used to sing it around the camp fire at camp sugar pine in the calif sierras in the early 60's....the tradition was that altho we 'practiced' it during the camp session, we never officially SANG it til our last night at camp....(usually with tears in our eyes)

I found this at the Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music.

I wonder if it's the ancestor of the camp song? Maybe someone more musically literate than I can tell us whether the tunes are similar. I notice the chorus has rests at the beginning of the measures where the camp-song lyrics have "Mmm." It's easy to see how one could evolve into the other.

I was a counsellor at Camp Wohelo in Maine, one of the English contingent that came over every year. It was an amazing experience and I am still in touch with them 30 years on! we sang this at campfire. Good memories

We sing "I want to linger" at our family campouts in the summer, every year, always on the last night. We just make one small variation, with "oo-oo" instead of mm-mm. I never imagined other people would know the song though.

It's a four-chord song.
In C, the chords are:

each line is the same and you'll probably be able to hear where each change falls (if not, come back and I'll break the phrases for you)

without a guitar in my hand, those are the breaks..chord changes come right at the end/beginning of each line.

I still remember this song and the last time I was at camp was in 1962, when I was 15. I guess some sweet memories stay with you all your life. We sang the same lyrics, but substituted "we" for "I" and "our" for "my" after the first verse. It was the camp staff that sang the song to the campers (and to each other at the end of the two co-ed weeks) on the last campfire night. Ah, what memories!

Not counselor, but farm-program presenter at outdoor ed/camp for ghetto kids brought out to rural IL demo farm/outdoor ed environmental center. I can think of quite a few I'd have liked to spend more time with.

Natural farmers, living all their lives in concrete, would step off the bus. Three or four of them in every busload, discovering where they really belonged for the first time. So powerful, so precious. They'd hold hands with us, not even aware they'd reached across to grab on, a lot of them. Two short weeks to discover the pulse of LIFE, and find out that bunnies don't really lay eggs but chickens and ducks do.

So I went to a church summer camp where we sang a version of this song and it went a little like this. We would all stand in a circle and hold hands, and on the second ‘barrump’ everyone would take a big step in and keep doing it until we couldn’t anymore.

There are variants for "I Wanna Be Friend of Yours" from college sources. The music is public domain. The lyrics were written by Kermit Goell. Copyrighted 19 Jan 1947.
