Greeting from the North West Coast of England. If anyone out there is going to the Fylde Folk Festival at Fleetwood Lancashire, England please say "hello" - I'll be at the John Bond Sing-around on Friday lunchtime (12 noon at the Mount Htl.) Jollies Bar Friday night (with Sundance UK) and again at Jollies Sunday Lunch (Sundance again) the rest of the time I'll be about all over playing with my son Simon or with Ian Gartside and or The Elderly Brothers (Sunday Evening at the Euston). Maybe we can arrange a regular Mudcatters gathering at future Festivals? If you need any info on the Festival contact the Web Site: http://www.fyldefolk.co.uk or e-mail me clansfolk@fyldefolk.freeserve.co.uk. Take care everyone and hope you all have a good festival (whichever and where ever it may be) Pete

Just Back from gig at Freeport - Fleetwood - all looks well for the Festival and the sun is shining.

four days and counting (if you don't count singing in the festival on Thurday night!)

see you all

Pete

Well I would definitely count the sing-in on Thuirsday night as part of the festival. And for that matter, there are concerts every day that week, so the festival really is a whole week, bitt ending with the weekend instead of starting with it, which Sidmouth and Whitby do.

I won't be there this year, because we've something in in Harlow. But anyone who is thinking of going to Fylde, get there, it's a great one. Very like Whitby, but without the hills. Trams in the street, escaped from te bright lights and confusion of Blackpool. Cobblestones. Fish and chip shops. The George Formby tradition emerges into the open.

If you're there, try the Royal Victoria pub for sessions.

I'll be there on Saturday - I'm the big, fat, hairy accordion player (difficult finding hairy accordions to play these days!) with Mucky Mountains Morris.

Unfortunately my Mudcat Tee Shirt hasn't yet arrived, so I'll be incognito!

I'm only there for Saturday - working Friday, dance out with Earl of Stamford Morris on Sunday...

I'm not sure Bernard, but i think the Mount is probably favourite. Perhaps somebody who knows for certain could answer this one.

Anybody?

I was there from Fri PM to Mon AM and had a great time. Loved the John Tams Band. Enjoyed the Eric Bogle slot on Sun PM immensly. Away from the 'Mainsteam' - Anthony John Clarke was brilliant as ever. Saw Paul Wrigley for the first time and thouroghly enjoyed his songs. Wasn't to keen on Tanglefoot - Sorry Canadian mudcatters:-( perhaps it is just not my cup of tea! Vowed never to go to the Steamer main room again. Did anyone else think the rowdies at the bar made it the worst festival venue of all??? Managed to book a couple of artists for our club (Swinton). BLATANT PLUG COMING.... Next main NW festival (I think) - SWINTON, 28th October. Watch this forum or the notice board for more details soon.....

Well Dave the Gnome-where were you sitting in the steamer? I had my mucat t shirt on and didn't see another-yes the group at the back were a bloody noise that stopped Tanglefoot giving their best-I was chatting to them after. In case you were near I was near the doorway for the whole evening-though we did get shoved into the middle in everyone elses way for a short while. But it was a good night. Cheers. Eric

I was there from Thursday eve til Mon morn. Wore my T-shirt to the first sing-around at the Mount thinking that someone might say Hi - but nobody did - didn't wear the t-shirt again due to it's being less than fresh after a night of singing and ale.

I had a wanderful time - avoided downstairs at the steamer but made my way upstairs there (you have to go behind the bar) to the singaround upstairs. Friday night was a brilliant one there.

I tend to avoid bands because I get a lot more out of hearing 'real' people sing. Sitting in rows of chairs, or straining to hear against the background of rowdies at the bar is not my cup of tea. Unless it's Eric Bogul and then I'll tolerate any conditions to hear him.

One of the good things about Fylde is that there is something for everybody. If you like big names you've got them, if you like ceilidhs or workshops on songwriting, singing or penny whistle technique, a craft fair, morris dancers, talks at the museum, guided tour round Fleetwood or just, like me, the simple sing-around, its all there for the taking (I think there were nine events most nights and most of them free).

I can't wait for next year.

Catrin

And yes, a mudcatter's session of some kind might be a good idea for the next one.

I was in the Steamer on Fri eve. until about 9:30 when I went off to watch John Tams at the Marine Hall and again on Sat afternoon from Tim VanEyken onwards. Gave up after noisy lot insisted on someone singing Happy Birthday to one of their number! Sat in the middle both times - Beard too much in need of a trim to be called a VanDyke - White panama though the day and black fedora at night - about 74 stones overweight....

Didn't get to any singarounds - Working on the basis that I can get singarounds for free anywhere - Why waste my £37 weekend ticket!!!

Agree with the mudcatters session for next year. Or how about one at Swinton in October?

You might be able to get sing-arounds for free anywhere Dave, that's true. But I for one can never get enough of them. I actually prefer a sing-around to a band (ok, perhaps that makes me a train-spotting sad-bastard, but what the hell).

It ain't you what's sad, Catrin, It's me for being too tight fisted to waste any of my ticket money!!!

There's noting like a good sing around. Especially at a festival, when you don't know who might drop in. I find them most delightful. If it is quiet, so much the better!

Thomas, I agree - the quiet ones are more intimate and people listen to each other. I also get to sing more songs....

Catrin (feeling a bit less 'sadbastardish')

Yes Dave I was there in the afternoon as well, Tim V E was very good, but the noisy lot (different noisy lot in the evening) were a shame-at least they got happy birthday played to them-it was that wench who was the noisiest-can't remember you though I'm sorry to say- I was sat at the front right by the speakers. Let me know about Swinton. Cheers. Eric

Well its over... but we've not recovered yet....... Would have loved to wear my Mudcatters T-Shirt but it's still "winging" its way to me......

If anyone out there would like to start a "mudcatters" meet for the next Fylde we'd be more than happy to set up a details board on the Fyldefolk Web site (which also covers the Festival)

my e-mail clansfolk@fyldefolk.freeserve.co.uk

"see you soon"
