That's great Annroi. I'm glad to hear it. Eamonn is quite the character. I used to visit him when I went home on holiday but he moved his shop a number of years ago and I kind of lost touch. The drum he made for me (I bought it initially for the look of it) sounds beautiful. It still has the goat's hair around one side of it and I thought it would not be taken too seriously as an instrument. But as I said it sounds great its got a big deep sound to it and a copy of Jim Fitzpatricks painting of Cuchullainn, drawn by Eamonn on the front. I also bought sonme bones and a beautiful blackthorn stick that he'd finished. He had some great sessions in his shop years ago when some of the local lads came down to sign on the dole. There'd be a couple of pipers, a few flute and fiddle players and of course Eamonn himself who is a great drummer in his own right. If you see him Annroi tell him I said hello from Canada. Den

Irish Bronze Age Horns.

Dug up only recently.

Date to pre-celtic times.

Played in style similar to didgeridoo in Australia.

Appeared on Australian CD "Reconciliation" with Maria Cullen, Simon Coningham, Alan Dargin, and (i forget).

I thought, given the universal appeal of the didge at the moment, that the pre-celtic irish horns would be undergoing a revival.

Obviously not.

Sad really.

Thanks Den, for asking!

Donegal was wonderful.. as always...... went to the Griannan... one of my favourite places..... along with Beltaney Stone Circle, and Kenbane Castle.....

since then I've taken the kids across the rope bridge and looked for Finn McCool at the causeway,,, (he wasn't there.. Shannon reckoned he was at the shops!!)...... swum at the white rocks in the shade of Dunluce Castle..... and eaten way too much food....... ah well.....

last night I met Annraoi at a lovely little club in Holywood.. and I hope to meet a few more 'catters in Carrick this Wednesday

See you all in another few days.....

John Purser of the Isle of Skye composes music incorporating a replica of a long metal horn found in a bog. It's called a carnyx. Kilmartin sessionsAlso John Kenny (recordings available)
I'm trying to remeber what the Irish horn is called

Hi All Its funny and nice to see how Alison has attracted to much interest in her visit home. I read the Mudcat and enjoy it. Over the years I noticed that Alison had lots and lots to 'say' - chiping in to many threads, helping lost souls. She's the same on the phone I am glad I wasn't paying for the phonecall 'grin' - as my tea didn't get cold it was eaten by my son.

I hope to see her this Wed night (6th) at an open session in the Coast Road Hotel in Carrickfergus (9.30 onwards). A real live world renound mudcatter here in Carrick - the FAIR ONE visits -whats the world coming to - Big Mick will eat his heart out.

I am positively green - Kelly Green, of course - with envy at the thought that all of you will get to share the evening with THE FAIR ONE. Do me a favor and see if you can get her to give the vile black stuff a fair go........LOL.

Annraoi, I wouldn't do that. I was just irritated at what I saw as a patronizing comment. But as I also said, I love your posts and your take on the music. Let us just let this pass and get back to what we do best..............to there and no further.

Please give THE FAIR ONE a couple of Big Mick hugs for me. Wish I could be there.

All the best,

Mick

Well Big Mick you really lost out not being here in Carrick. Yes hugs, kisses and pints all round - Alison and Mark turned up and jumped straight in. Alison on the music Mark on the pints :-)) Alison is great on the flute and whistle, harmonising with others, lifting the music and simply doing her own thing and having fun. Everyone here said they want her back the following week. I'm hoping she can make the 20th back in Carrick.

If you ever get the chance to meet Alison and Mark in the flesh take it - they are a lovely couple - not what you hear about people from Oz :-))

I also got to meet Annraoi who also played guitar and sang - he just lives down the road from me and hopefully he will be back to Carrick in the future.

Alison and Mark thanks for your company your welcome anytime, it was a pleasure.

G'day Alison,
It's great to see you're having such a good time, I'm very envious.

Got your card thanks, I don't know if I can deduce anything about St Kevin, but that's a very masculine looking spire his church has.

Good news for your kids - their boat's fixed. They'll probably nag you to take them home now so they can play with it.

Cheers,
Alan

Alison called in again to the Wednesday night open folk/trad music night in the Coast Road Hotel in Carrickfergus.

Once again she was an asset to the music - not only because half the people who normally come didn't (maybe they heard she was coming back - grin) - but because she is so bloody good - she even sang. She's a person who has everything and good looks as well.

Eat your heartout Big Mick I even got a hug....

Alison it was great to meet you and hear you play, enjoy the rest of your holiday in Disneyland and have a safe journey. Drop me an email when you get home.

well I have one day left here...... spent today at Tara (and I know I gave directions in another thread way way back.... but I can now say with certainty that my map was wrong!!..... it is beside the N3 NOT the N2... just in case anyone finds that old thread....)...

My bodhrans are absolutely gorgeous (I'll photo and scan them sometime)......

I'm off to Frankfurt on Tuesday, then LA on Wednesday (Park Vue Hotel Annaheim for a few days in case anyone is in the area and wants to set up a session)then off travelling for a few more...... I doubt very much that I'll be near a computer before I get back to Sydney 5/10 I think...... (or 10/5 for you Americans... *grin*)

so I'll 'see' you all when I get back....

the kids are splashing around in the pool... and I'm not sure whether to eat or sleep..... isn't jet lag a wonderful thing?!!

the bodhrans whistles and the bagpipes all made it through customs unscathed........ now I just need to find a teach yourself bagpipes site..... *grin*

Mark, believe it or not I was sitting in the plane eating macadamias as we flew past Hawaii. I thought of you and waved.

the rest of you I waved.... but you didn't wave back!!! *grin*

as we flew down over the US we had brilliant clear skies, and fantastic views. We saw the Rockies, and one of the Great Lakes, (so I waved to all the Canadians and blew a kiss to a certain big spud carrying Mick)*grin*....

excues my pathetic grip of US geography... if I get places in completely the wrong order.... either it is my confusion or the pilot was taking the scenic route....

then we flew over Colorado and Salt Lake City.... strange sitting at so many thousand feet looking at place names on a map and thinking... so and so from Mudcat lives somewhere near here..... It was a very nice sensation... to know that you were all down there somewhere... just in case we crashed.. so I could have somewhere to sleep......

I had a fantastic time with the Mudcatters I did get to meet... someday I hope to meet more of you for real.....

I had a wonderful time... but now it's nice to be back...
