Subject: RE: Lewis Collins? From: GUEST,Terry Date: 27 Aug 00 - 10:43 PM Sorry about the misfire above. Does any of you erudite Mudcatters know whether Lewis Collins is a true, historical person? (He of the "Angels laid him away" fame?) Thanks in advance. |
Subject: RE: Lewis Collins? From: IvanB Date: 28 Aug 00 - 08:38 PM Terry, according to the note at the end of the lyrics, posted here: Click here the song is about a true incident about which Hurt knew. Also, a review of a rendition by Jerry Garcia referred to the song as "A lovely little lullaby about a terrible murderer." I thought I had a songbook with the song and a bit more info, but I can't find it. 'Fraid I left it at my dad's at the first of the month. Sorry I can't give you more information than this. If my songbook does have more when I get it back, I'll post it, but that probably won't be for a while. From link above: LOUIS COLLINS (Mississippi John Hurt) by Mississippi John Hurt recording of 19 from , copyright notice Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned, to see her son Louis leavin' home The angels laid him away The angels laid him away, they laid him six feet under the clay The angels laid him away Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned, to see her son Louis leavin' home The angels laid him away Oh, Bob shot once and Louis shot too, shot poor Collins, shot him through and through The angels laid him away Oh, kind friends, oh, ain't it hard?, to see poor Louis in a new graveyard The angels laid him away The angels laid him away, they laid him six feet under the clay The angels laid him away Oh, when they heard that Louis was dead all the people they dressed in red The angels laid him away The angels laid him away, they laid him six feet under the clay The angels laid him away Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned, to see her son Louis leavin' home The angels laid him away The angels laid him away, they laid him six feet under the clay The angels laid him away __________ Note: according to Hurt this song, his own composition, was based on a true episode
