Subject: The Black Watch Invades Eastern Carolina!!
From: Mbo
Date: 29 Aug 00 - 12:13 PM

YES! It's about time we got some fun here! The Black Watch is coming to East Carolina University, my school (and where I am sitting right now!) Here's the article from Campus Express: August 2000

The Massed Bands of Her Majesty's Household Cavalry--The Drums, Pipes, and Highland Dancers of The Black Watch and Band/Choir of The Prince of Wales's Division--will put down their weapons and pick up their pipes and drums to parade in Minges Coliseum at 7pm. Sept. 17. This extravaganza will open the 2000-2001 S.Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series season.

The Drums, Pipes, and Highland Dancers of The Black Watch and Band/Choir of The Prince of Wales's Division performance is a stirring spectacle of pomp and pageantry that comes straight from the military tradition of the United Kingdom. British military forces, which draw members and regiments from each country in the United Kingdom, have long associated certain musical instruments with individual countries. While Scotland is renowned for it's great piping bands, England is best known for it's brass bands, and Wales for it's choirs. With a combination of all three, the spectacular event will delight anyone with an interest in history, military tradition, or the United Kingdom. Brightly costumed in their ceremonial gear, these soldiers perform spirited invigorating military music, including songs from each of the four countries that make up The British Isles, England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. And as a tribute to the United States, they will conduct a ceremonial presentation of the colors, along with the East Carolina University ROTC, while playing our National Anthem.

For a special pre-show treat, the St.Andrew's Presbyterian Pipe Band of Laurinburg, North Carolina will open the show at 6:30pm. The award-winning pipe band is one of the most successful competition band in the Southeast, competing at the Grade III level in the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association. Their CD has been aired on BBC Radio, Scotland, and they have been featured on National Public Radio's Thistle & Shamrock, and Southern Living magazine.

YES! I'm pumped! I've heard the St.Andrew's gang...their awesome! They play this great pipe tune, written as a lullaby by a Scottish immigrant to North Carolina, called "Dean Cadalan Samhach." The lyrics are in the DT, here. Don't worry Mario, I'll get the tune for it sent to you soon!

--Matt

Yes, Mbo, they will put on a fine show. I heard them do "the hymn" and it literally brought tears to my eyes. It saddens me to say, though, that I could not in good conscience ever again go to see them. Why? Well, look into the record of their conduct in Northern Ireland.

I know, not to mention what they did at Waterloo. But that's just the unit history, surely not the present musicians & singers?

Actually North Carolina used to have their own black watch but they have done a good job in stifling that particular element.

Spaw (I love NC....beautiful state, lots of folk roots)

I doubt if any of the musicians carry rifles as normal soldiers, they are most likely to be as near to professional musicians in the armed forces as you can get.

They will in all liklihood never have been in volved in NI. Their usual role in a conflict would be as stretcher bearers.

Enjoy the pagent for the entertaiment it is intended to be.
