many years ago, at Camp Magpies in Canaan, NH, we sang a song I think was called Martian Lullaby. My brother, who lives in Thailand, is looking for the lyrics to sing to his Thai-American daughter. This is the chorus. Can you help me find the rest?

My true love's an ordinary thing You can see her anywhere. With her pink antenna and her polka dot skin And the 24 dimples on her chinny chin chin, And the hydrogen sulfide of her hair.

You can reply direct to my email if you have any clues! Thanks! Monica Fisch

MARTIAN LULLABY

Oh my darling
Oh my darling
How I miss you
I never needed you so much
'Til I missed those
Crimson eyelids
And the scales I love to touch
You're my cosmic
Little sweetheart
And your thoughtwaves are the most,
Sernding growls of love like thunder
All along the Martian coast!

Oh, my true loves
An ordinary thing
You'd know her anywhere
By her pink antenna
And her polka dot skin
ANd the thrity four dimples
In her chinny chin chin
And the hydrogen sulphide
In her hair...

Recorded by Pete Seeger for Folkways, circa 1961, album title "Gazetteer" or similar, if memory serves.

Amos ^^

So, Amos, you got a tune for this classic? Almost scans to "Clementine," but not quite.

Monica e-mailed another verse:
We were ready
to be married
When an earthman led her astray,
And I haven't
seen my darling
since that sad, galactic day.
If you see her
in Chicago,
or on Venus or Mercury,
and if you happen to recognize her,
send her back to me!
So, what's the tune?

Pete Seeger's album "Gazette", Smithsonian/Folkways Fn-2501, came out in 1958. It was a children's album. It had a song called "Martian Love Song" by Lee Hays and Earl Robinson. The song also appears in "The Weavers' Song Book," Harper & Row, 1960, p 154, where it is apparently called "My True Love."

I have to assume that's a rhetorical question, as you have been around here long enough to know someone is always interested in the lyrics !
tho' sometimes only to tell us we have them "wrong"

Ok, here's the whole thing:

MARTIAN LOVE SONG
(By Lee Hays and Earl Robinson as sung by Pete Seeger on GAZETTE, Vol. 1, Folkways Records FN2501. © 1958)

CHORUS: My true love's an ordinary thing.
You'd know her anywhere,
By her pink antenna and her polka dot skin
And the hydrogen sulfide of her hair!

1. Oh, my darling, how I miss you!
I never needed you so much,
Till I missed your crimson eyelids
And the scales I love to touch;
You're my cosmic little sweetheart,
And your thought waves are the most,
Sending growls of love like thunder
All along the Martian Coast.

CHORUS: My true love's an ordinary thing
You'd know her anywhere,
With her pink antenna and her polka dot skin
And the hydrogen sulfide of her hair!

2. We were ready to be married
When an earthman led her astray,
And I haven't seen my darling
Since that sad galactic day;
Oh, if you meet her in Chicago,
Or on Venus or Mercury,
And if you happen to recognize her,
Send her back to me!

FINAL CHORUS: My true love's an ordinary thing
You'd know her anywhere,
By her pink antenna and her polka dot skin,
And the 24 dimples on her chinny-chin-chin,
And the hydrogen sulfide of her hair!

And it's really a kind of a jazzy banjo tune. You really should hear it!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I don't know about the original in the songbook, but when my 2nd grade music teacher taught my class the song, the final chorus had the added second-to-last line "(Well, they're not really dimples because dimples go in.)"

Yes, I used to sing this song fifty years ago as a teenage folksinger. Didn't know Pete Seeger introduced it, and can't remember how I learned it! Nevertheless . . . . "My true love's an ordinary thing, you'd know her anywhere / By her pink antenna and her polka dot skin / and the hydrogen sulfide of her hair./ Oh my darling, how I miss you / I never needed you so much / 'til I missed your crimson eyelids / and the scales I love to touch. / You're my cosmic little sweetheart / and your thought waves are the most / sending growls of love like thunder / all along the Martian coast. / We were ready to be married when an earthman led her astray, / and I've not seen my poor darling / since that sad galactic day. / If you meet her in Chicago / or on Venus or Mercury / and if you should happen to recognize her / send her back to me C.O.D./ Yes, my true love's an ordinary thing,/ you'd know her anywhere / by her pink antenna and her polka dot skin / and the twenty-four dimples on her chinny chin chin / Well, they're not really dimples 'cause dimples turn in / And the hydrogen sulfide of-----her------hair." Good luck!
