Thanks Jim
Actually I finally ran across the song from an old cassette recording I had made from a TV show years ago. Naturally it wasn't labeled and in a box with 100's of other cassettes. A few years back in a feudal attempt to organize old cassettes I happen to find the song I'd been looking for.
    Some things just take time.

CHORUS
Billy come home now and keep me good company,
Billy come sit by my side.
Billy come home now and keep me good company, can't you see Bill how I've cried.

Billy went off one day, leaving his wife alone, never said why or good bye
But it was to much for him, yet not enough for him, everything fell like a lie.
And in quiet moments an emptiness came to him, he never know when or why,
Only that all the vows, didn't mean nothing now, so hard to watch something die. CHORUS

Crossing the country, Bill /felt awful lonely, not /living just /hitching a /ride,
Talking to many men, /never knew anyone, /friendless ex/cept for his /pride.
And all these feelings of /loneliness, emptiness, /kept growing deeper in/side.
Gathering storms of pain, /tears burned his eyes again, /Billy had no place to /hide.
CHORUS

Why is this story told, /ever since days of old, //men leaving /women a/lone,
When all the good is done, /time to be moving on, the /hero's are /all rolling /stones,
And yet when they leave them and /go seeking freedom and /think that the Eaglea has/flown,
These /proud independents, so /bravely resplendent, will /find there's no joy in a/lone.
CHORUS
                      Em                C                A                                          D
CHORUS + B i l l y come home now, Billy come home now and K e e p   m e   g o o d
c o m p a n y.

Sung by Gibson and White (Jr.) on TV program "Soundstage." I was there.

According to information at the Bob Gibson Legacy web site, BILLY COME HOME was recorded by Bob Gibson and Hamilton Camp on their album "Homemade Music" (1978), and with the title BILLY COME HOME NOW, it is also a Gibson compilation album "The Living Legend Years" (2008). At Allmusic.com, Gibson is credited as writer.

I pieced these lyrics together from a couple of sound samples:

...was too much for him, yet not enough for him.
Ev'rything felt like a lie,
And in quiet moments, an emptiness came to him.
He never knew when or why,
Only that all the vows didn't mean nothing now,
So hard to watch something die.
She said, "Billy, come home now. Keep me good company.
Ah, Billy, come sit by my side."
She said, "Billy, come home now, and keep me good company.
Can't you see, Bill, how I've cried?..."

I was checking out the Tom Paxton thread and was reminded of a song that I heard years and years ago. I believe I heard it on TV and think it was sung by Tom Paxton and Josh White. The course went... "Billy come home now and keep me good company, Billy come sit by my side. Billy.... come home now, can't you see Bill how I cried" ?? Can't recall having ever heard anyone else do this song. Any info?
