Subject: Lyr Add: EILEAN M'ÀRAICH / ISLE OF ARRAN
From: GUEST,Philippa
Date: 31 Aug 00 - 03:05 PM

For some reason, I can't locate the earlier thread on this topic, so I'm starting a new one.

Jill Rogoff sent me the words of Eilean M'Araich. I've made a stab at translating the lyrics. Anyone who can improve on my attempt is welcome to do so.

I think the html codes for accented letters can be used on any computer; see http://www.bbsinc.com/symbol.html
It's a good precaution to use these codes when writing for the webpage, even though they're a bit of a nuisance. Sometimes when we copy in diacritical marks which look right on our own computers, they look completely different when they've gone through the website filters.

Giùlan mi le beannachd bhùamsa
Null gu eilean ùain' a chaoil
Far an tric an toir mo bhruadair
Mi air chuairt thar chluaintean gaoil.

[seisd]
Eilean m'àltruim, eilean àgmhor Eilean àluinn 'san chuan sgith Tha ghaoth bhog a thig thar sàile 'uat Mar thuis slànuchaidh do mo chridh

Tha luchd gaoil an sin' gam' fhèitheamh Tha mo dhaoine fhèin 'cur fàilt
Tha mo chridh 's mo mhiann 'gam tharruing
Null, air ais, gu m'eilean gràidh

Far am bheil do shrùthain fhinealt
Troimh do ghlinn a ruith gu cuan
Far am bheil do bheanntan àrda
Tairgsinn sgàil bho theas 's bho fhùachd

rough translation

I bear my blessings over
To the green isle of the strait
Where my dreams often take me
Traversing beloved meadows

[chorus]
Island of my upbringing, island of happiness
Beautiful island in the weary [?] sea
A soft wind comes over the sea from you
Like incense that revives my heart

My loved ones are awaiting me
My own people are welcoming [me]
My heart and my desire are drawing me
Back across to the island I love

Where your crystal streams
Run through the gleanns down to the sea
Where your high mountains
Form a curtain from heat and from cold

The problem I referred to regarding diacrital marks has just recurred; see Badai na Scadan

Phillipa, the only thing I can see is that there aren't any semi-colons after those numerics. Also, remember Mac users might see different characters than intended due to possible character set differences.

Again I reiterate, it's SAFER for intent to use "eacute; to display é. The browsers take care of it and ensure that the right character is shown.
